I haven't watched enough of Louis CK's sets to rank them, but I saw this last night and I loved it. Definitely got stronger as the show went on and I was actually surprised when the "Of course, but maybe" part finished it off because I was ready for more.

Just a heads up, in case you didn't know, there is an extended sequence of jokes about breasts and men's obsession with them.. if that might be uncomfortable for you/your mom. I know I'd be a little uneasy if my mom was in the room for that bit. Otherwise, surprisingly parent friendly set. Even with all the swearing, it mostly comes from stuff that will really hit home with parents, adults in general.

...My mum's favourite comedian is Billy Connolly.

That first moment where he says "of course, but maybe" in one single shot needs to be a GIF. It'd be perfect for so many things.

ofcoursebutmaybeolajd.gif

my dvr cut off the first 10 minutes... :(

Is it available to download from him yet?
Not until September.

Definitely enjoyed it, but think it was his weakest special yet. Granted, he's the best comedian working today so take "weak" with a grain of salt, but I'd say a good 50% of it got no reaction from me whatsoever.

I am hoping the one that will be available in September is a much more fleshed out show that isn't cut/edited for HBO. I'd gladly pay $5 for that.

He shot this in 4k, with one of the best cameras you can get. He said it should look really good for another 15 years. Where as most stuff shot today will look really bad as HDTV's begin to improve.

I liked the stage he shot it on, that must be more nerve racking being completed surrounded by fans, but he did a great job of performing to the entire crowd.

I always imagined it would be a lot more comfortable than it just being one way. There's a level of intimacy you get with full 360 involvement versus just being on a 2d plane to the audience.

This was his best set yet. Live at Beacon being the weakest.

Of course, but maybe was amazing.

Old lady with dog.

So much good shit.

Glistening spheres of forehead sweat IN 4K

We will truly be living in the future

Best part for me was when he was describing how guys keep going after women on first dates even when they have already won the girl over. The way he describes what guys do just cracks me up.

Was this better than Live at the Beacon Theater? I was incredibly disappointed with that one.

I bought Beacon Theatre day of release and think it is the 'worst' of his specials but still better than 90% of any other comedian's special.

I think Oh My God is Louis's best special, period. I say that after watching Patrice O'Neal's Elephant in the Room special which is my #1, period.

There was not a bit in this special I did not laugh at and I also laughed out loud a bunch of times whereas Beacon I don't think I laughed out loud once.

This entire post is wrong, this special isn't remotely close to Louis' best work at all. It's good but that's about it.

My perspective:
Lucky Louie > Louie
Rick Shapiro = Patrice O'Neal > Joey Diaz > Jim Norton > Louis CK
Louie is better on Opie and Anthony than he is in his specials.

So if anyone holds similar opinions to these, than I think you will really like this special.
In fact, this special has redeemed Louie in my eyes and I like him more.

watched it. Was great

his whole bit about "of crouse but maybe" was brilliant. The build up to the "but maybe" when he brought up slavery and the reaction. Just great

Holy crap, that's so nuts. Your opinion is so alien to me. But I'm glad you have it.

To me, Live at the Beacon Theatre is one of his strongest shows, but also one where the highs are highest and the lows are lowest. I blame it on some of the material just not being that relatable or funny to begin with. For instance, having never done any drugs, the bit on drugs fell kinda flat for me, and I feel he spent a bit too much time on that Jizzanthepuss kid. I had to rewatch the show for it to really grow on me though. Beacon Theatre is an acquired taste.

Oh My God, by contrast, is more consistently funny, but there aren't really any jokes that have me rolling on the floor. "Of course, but maybe" has to be his best closer yet. His other shows never seem to have a real closer. They just end abruptly. Not so with Oh My God.

Also I'm a bit disappointed that the joke about his new place (where he acts like a hobo on purpose) got shortened compared to his performance in London: the HBO version of the joke ends with him relishing in the other dude's anger and confusion, but when I saw it in London the conclusion to that joke was that the guy never actually questioned Louis, but that Louis made the whole conversation up in his head because that's how insane he is.

In particular, the last sentence he drops in this show is amazing

Was this shot before or after London? The way he writes and evolves his material, how do you know it was actually cut editorially?

Has he talked about having to cut stuff? I'm sure he edited it himself, so it's not like he didn't have any say in the final product.

Anyway, I thought it was his best special ever. Dude has just evolved into one of the most profound comedians ever, but without ever stopping being hilarious.

Yeah, I think the special was shot in February and the London show happened a month later, so it's possible he just didn't have that bit at the time.

This entire post is just wrong. ;)

I do mildly disagree though. The person he was quoting was replying to someone, and said reply was so matter of fact and ardent that a reader may take it to be some sort of agreed upon truth. Obviously justifying your point of view is leagues better, throwing some doubt into someone reading the original reply does count for something.

rest assured, as a person that has done drugs, he fucking nailed the 'maybe drugs will be cool in this situation' and then finding out immediately that they are not cool in that situation.

I thought the Jizzanthepuss bit was brilliant as well, he really conveyed the idea of wanting to punch a kid really well.
