There's a ton of great anime out there. Here are some particular favorites, both recent and classic.

Paranoia Agent - Modern day black comedy and horror about a serial attacker. Deeply weird, loaded with bizzare social commentary, and brilliantly directed.

Lupin: Castle of Cagliostro - There's a ton of Lupin out there, but this movie is definately the place to start. Caper film hijinx with loveable crooks rescuing a princess from the scumbag rulers of a tiny European country. It's like deep fried fun on a stick - with powdered sugar!

Samurai Champloo - The Cowboy Bebop team decided to make a hip-hop samurai show. 'Nuff said.

Hajime no Ippo/Fighting Spirit - The quinessential shounen sports series, about a young man who takes up boxing and strives to be the best in Japan. Let me put it this way: I don't care for sports, but I absoultely loved this show. Warmth, camradarie, epic fighting, and 100% awesome.

Planetes - In the near future, mankind has established firm footholds both in Earth orbit and on the moon, and is now looking towards Jupiter. Meanwhile, the less glamorous astronauts have to clean up orbital debris. Hard SF with simply wonderful characerization and an excellent overarcing plot.

Patlabor - In the near future, mankind uses giant robots for a lot of industrial and military uses. Alas, this sometimes gets out of hand, so you have cops with giant robots to keep order. Our heroes are a gaggle of misfit cops solving crimes ranging from the minor to the epic, the mundane to the bizzare, and all manner of strange happenings in-between. The characterization here is positively top notch; I love Planetes, but it pales in comparison to Patlabor. If possible, watch the TV series from episode one onward, else start with the first movie.

Infinite Ryvius - In the not-so-near future, students at space academy have to abandon their space station and find themselves on a secret military ship - at which point they're branded as terrorists and are forced to flee across the solar system in search of help. It's Lord of the Flies in space, with factions of teenagers at each others throats, quickly shifting political alliances on-board the ship, and some great hard SF, including one of the most interesting giant robots to come along in years.

Maison Ikkoku - Romantic comedy about a hapless college student who falls for his apartment manager. Too bad the rest of the apartment is full of weirdos who delight in his suffering. This is the high water mark for the animated romantic comedy, with fun characters, genuine emotion, and a brilliant snapshot of the life of a poor student in Tokyo during the early 80s.

Monster - A dead serious thriller about a Japanese doctor tracking down a serial killer in Germany. Intricate, sophisticated, and beautifully crafted. If you feel the urge to mix your cartoons with gritty realism, this is the way to go.

I haven't seen much of the new season, but the winners look to be Beck (kids form a band, try to hit in America), Yakitate!! Japan (totally extreme baking anime...no, really), Count of Monte Cristo (SF remake of the classic with amazing visual style), and perhaps Bleach (superior shounen fighting with demons and big-ass swords).

While we're talking about recommendations, does anyone know of any good scary, mess-with-your-mind anime's? I'm not talking about the American idea of horror, like a slasher bloodbath, but a genuinely scary, creepy kind of show?

Monster is a good thriller, and it made me think of how great the medium would be for a scarier kind of show. Does one exist?

Boogiepop Phantom I think... I've never watched it but I think it was described like what you're looking for Dragmire.

Hmm, this reminds me that my OnDemand service just added a couple of dozen anime series for decent prices (most single eps are 1.99, but they block 4 or 5 eps for 3.99 or 4.99 which is cheaper than renting them). Only downside is that I don't know anything about most of the series, and I imagine most of them are old subbed versions.

I rented the first eps of Excel Saga but didn't like it. I'll have to make a list of them when I get home to get some opinions about which are worth watching - but seeing the whole series' available with zero effort is pretty appealing even if the shows are a bit mediocre.

With the Blue Cosmos organization poised to come back bigger than ever, and the Earth Alliance and ZAFT caught up in the midsts of an arms race, it was only inevitable that war would break out once again.

During a conference between ZAFT and the Orb Union at ZAFT's Armory One facility, an Alliance special forces team launches a break-in operation and makes off with three new Gundam mobile suits. Forced to pursue them, Shinn Asuka of ZAFT and Athrun Zala of Orb take the remaining two Gundams and head out in the new assault battleship Minerva.

While not quite horror, Paranoia Agent has it's creepy moments, and is definately of the mess with your mind variety. Ditto for Serial Experiments Lain. And, while it's not anime, look for the film Pulse (or Kaido) by Japanese director Kiyoshi Kurosawa (no relation), which does a terrific job with freaky, subtle modern horror.

ONE PIECE - It is a physical impossibility to not fall absolutely in love with this show's characters.

Samurai Champloo

Monster

Naruto (decidedly a love it or hate it anime)

Cowboy Bebop

FLCL

Paranoia Agent (Satoshi Kon can seemingly do no wrong)

Anything from Miyazaki, including, but by no means limited to: Lupin III and the Castle of Cagliostro, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, Laputa: Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service, Princess Mononoke, and Spirited Away

Some other shows I haven't seen enough of yet to make a real judgment on but seem promising are:

Beck
Bleach
Gankutsuou (Count of Monte Cristo)
Yakitate!! Japan

Oh, and I finally got around to renting the first DVD of Berserk, so I'll finally get a chance to see some of it in the next few days (though I've heard it doesn't really get good until after the first DVD).
