Ok seriously.... IGN's Gamecube Best Graphics Top Ten

IGN's Cube Top Ten Graphics

Seriously, I am the biggest Metriod Prime fan there is.... But putting it above RE4? I don't know... And Star Wars should definetly be contending for the top spot... RE4 or SW:RL...

Or am I just delusional here?

Artistically I like MP more than RE4. And Rogue Leader II was pretty ugly in my book, at least on a standard TV...very bad texture flickering.

Bit of a confused list, IMO. Not sure about 10 but my top 3 would have been:

Resident Evil 4
F Zero GX
Star Wars Rogue Squadron

Beyond Good and Evil is the forth best looking GameCube game? Seriously? PoP1? Honestly, come on now. Star Fox Adventures, Star Wars, and F-Zero should be higher, and Luigi's Mansion, Paper Mario 2, and SMS should be on there. I'd even put Wave Race over some of those titles.

Filler list, and clearly erroneous due to the exclusion of Animal Crossing and Cubivore.

i love sarcasm

For someone who likes sarcasm, you seem to have a poor grasp of it.

Like I said, this is a meaningless filler for IGN, since there's not a lot else to run on cube.IGN at the moment.

The first Metroid DOES look better than the second one -- by a good margin, too. But no, it doesn't touch Resident Evil 4.

I dont really agree. While there are better enviroments in the first one, Sanctuary fortress in the 2nd one is better looking than anything on the first one.

Characters feature believable motion-captured and hand-drawn facial animation. Plus, spectacular particle effects and environmental lighting add the finishing touches and really bring the morbid world of RE4 to life.

?

Metroid Prime looked awesome...But Resident Evil 4 definitely looks better. I might even put The Wind Waker in front of Metroid Prime. But that's a close one.

I'd have to agree with Metroid Prime 1 being the better overall visual package. Phendrana Drifts looks better than Sanctuary Fortress, in my opinion.

RE4 still is leagues beyond both, though.

I don't remember the models having 2-D features, where does the hand-drawn aspect come in?

I thought the facial animations were hand drawn and then thrown into Maya.

Totally agree with Metroid Prime. Echoes didn't really manage to match up to the creations found in Prime, in my opinion, so I'd still place Prime above it. Prime deserves to stand above RE4 as well simply due to its polish. RE4 is amazing looking, but it has too many visual flaws while Prime has virtually none.

All that plus the solid 60 fps. :D

Beyond Good and Evil? Sure it's a nice looking game, but I'm sure there were a ton of other games that looked better. And Rogue Leader, but not Rebel Strike? Does that make sense?

Ugh. BG&E? PoP:SoT? Star Wars: Rogue Leader but no Rebel Strike? Star Fox Adventures at number 9?Mp1>Mp2? And godamnit, what the heck is so impressive about the graphics in F Zero GX? The game looks fugly on most tracks.

I dont like this list.

I think the list takes time of release into account, although they don't seem to make that clear. Hence Metroid Prime over Metroid Prime Echoes.

No Baten Kaitos though? Are they kidding?

The list doesn't make sense to me, either. First of all, I would've only put ust one the MPs on there because they look to similar to have both occupying a spot.

Rebel Strike should replace Rogue Leader.

Luigi's Mansion deserves a spot. It has held up pretty well for a launch title, and it still might be EAD's flashiest title this generation in terms of visuals.

I also think that Pikmin 2 deserves at least the tenth spot and that Jungle Beat should have some kind of honorable mention for some of its flash.

If that's the case, I don't understand what the significance would be over just having animated the faces solely in Maya -- then again, chances are they needed to use reference for morpheme distinction, so I really have no clue why something like that would be a particularly notable technique.

I think the reality is that IGN doesn't know what they hell they are talking about. They should've said that Capcom did the facial animation by hand as oppossed to saying hand drawn. Obviously there's big distinction there.

F-Zero GX?
I loved this game (damn hard) but the graphics were awful. AWFUL. Only two tracks worth mentioning GFX-wise - Big Blue and The Green Plant (?, the one with all the trees), the rest is almost on PS1 level of visual complexity.

Art-wise the space track was pretty damn awesome.

Oh, the music was top-notch, especially pilot themes :)

I think F-Zero deserves a spot. It's another case of cost vs benefit. The game wasn't high poly, but the textures blow away almost all of the other games on that list.

No Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles? Hmph.

I completely forgot that one.

Top tens are almost always worthless because you have these situation where you there are others choices that are equally valid. This list makes the problem worst for having such glaring omissions and questionable inclusions.

Now that makes more sense. Key-framing facial animations is a b!tch :)

Pikmin 2 needs to be disqualified simply because of its horrible textures.

And Viewtiful Joe belongs because...what, it can be ported to all current handhelds without any problems?

Viewtiful Joe? Hahaha. Yeah, the game looks neat for all of ten minutes I guess, but it doesn't belong in any top-anything graphics lists.

I also don't think Wind Waker should be up there, though. The entire game wasn't even cel-shaded. The characters looked neat, but most of the environments were simply low-polygonal structures with crappy textures, giving it somewhat of a cartoon look to some people. To me, it just looked like what it was: crappy models with crappy textures, with cel-shaded characters.

I scan the article and I find this:

Is it fare to include two games in the same franchise on the same "Top Ten" list
Wtf? "Fare"?

Here's oThe Sands of Time envelops you in vivid world of mystery and mysticism.
? oThe? wtf?

Jade, the game's youthful protagonist, as well as Page,
"Page"? wtf?

How am I supposed to take a list seriously if it can't spell words correctly that don't even fall in the norm for words people screw up, let alone get their facts on the games straight?

Luigi's Mansion should be on there and RSIII certainly looks better than RSII. Crystal Chronicles looks nice in places as well.

I was like "WTF?" when I saw BG&E on there, that game, while fun, is definitely not one of the top graphically impressive games out there on the cube. And I agree that MP>MP2 in graphics mainly because I like the style of MP better than MP2

Wtf is Starfox doing on there?

Have you actually seen SFA? Despite it's linear crappiness, it's a very beautiful game.

if you have a good set up for the controls facial animation isn't too bad to do by hand and if it's being done by a decent animator it looks LIGHT YEARS better than Mo-cap

I hate facial mo-cap animation, it never seems to really synch up right and it always feels so lifeless and dead

but anyway back to the main thread

I don't like this list but I guess no one ever agrees with any list but this just seems really not thought out at all

if i had to make a list and let it be a combination of technical advancement and artistic merit it would probably go like this

1. Resident Evil 4
2. Resident Evil (remake)
3. Metroid Prime 1/2 (put them together)
4. Legend Of Zelda Wind Waker
5. Star Wars Rogue Squadron: Rogue Leader
6. StarFox Adventures
7. Final Fantasy CC
8. F-Zero GX
9. Viewtiful Joe
10. Luigi's Mansion

maybe change some of that order around a bit not sure but those are the 10 I would give it to
