My old 12" iBook G4 from 2004. Its so small and it still outperforms most laptops people carry to university battery wise. It also is still perfectly usable for a lot of school work. A lot of the software we use runs on heavy servers. With mac osx you can just use the terminal or X11 terminal to use the programs on a 6 year old laptop :D

Around 1998, I had a friend get one of these for me when his sister was visiting japan. I was sick of tapes and wanted something new. MP3 players back then couldn't store the number of songs I wanted.

I used it to record mixes from my CDs or from my computer MP3s and I spent hours inputting track names manually with a tiny jog wheel, letter by letter, and creating song breaks by hand.

it was awesome.

I had around 2 dozen minidisc mixes and used this as my portable music player till i got my fist ipod (ipod photo 30 GB) in 2005.

Minidisc was awesome. I ripped about a quarter of my CD collection to MD, and thus had almost all of my music with me at any time in my car, in a shoebox.

Of course, now all that can fit on an iPod!

You're quite right, I'm getting on a bit you know. It was F-Zero and Super Mario World. The others came later!

The slow down on Super R-Type was atrocious, but I still loved it!

I think I can count this as it had electronic sounds:

And the times I had with these...

I played my Mini Munchman so much I got the highest score you could get: HHH (the display only could show up to 999, if you got more points-HHH)

Great stuff!

When I was little I thought the "DOT MATRIX WITH STEREO SOUND" text was a warning. I thought dot=don't and to matrix with something was to mess around with it. So for me it meant: Don't mess around with the stereo sound :lol

Ever played the original Wario Ware? On the quick bits between each micro game on 9-Volt's stage, it's a Game Boy screen border with the line "DO NOT MATRIX WITH STEREO" on the top :p

Haven't found anything to replace it, unfortunately. A plug 'n play pure music player with a decent sized hard drive doesn't seem to be anything people buy these days.

Game Boy Micro
Still have it on me most of the times. It's just the most practical way to kill time, has a great screen, great batterylife and a killer library.

Got one of these in 98, most of my friends didn't even know what the hell it was. Thing is built like a tank and still works fine despite hundreds of trips snowboarding back then. Found it when I was moving earlier this year with some MD's and poped in a few mixes to see what they were..... numetal :(

my first digital camera. It was great back in the time (I think I bought it in early 2002). But damn, those stupid smartmedia cards were expensive as hell.

One of the WarioWare games poked fun of this, in between microgames there was a Game Boy that said "Do not matrix with sound" across the top, apparently this was a common thing. I thought the same thing when I was a kid too, cracked me up to see it in the game.

Yes! Still sitting in my old room at my parents' house.

I have a Sony record player and one of these. It weighs as much as my car but oh does it sound great.

Loved those keyboards.

I've bought I don't know how many other KBs over the years but those still are my favorite.

The best alternative I've found that's really affordable has been this

I bought one just for the hell of it and loved it so much I bought another for my office. It's not just the minimalisticness of it that I love, but the feel of it is damned near perfect.

I was rocking one of these:

up until mobile phones specialized in mp3 playing and 2GB micro-SD cards were actually affordable, as I was used to bring around like 2 or 3 CDs full of mp3's. Size was never a matter, as I use to bring a backpack or a man-purse everywhere.

I own seven of these, all neatly stored in my closet. I got lucky and was able to buy some stock that had been sitting around in a warehouse. Given their usual lifespan, I hope to still be typing on one when I croak.

So is that one the same build quality as the IBM? It looks just nice enough and sturdy enough that I may just buy one for work (and one for home).

I've only used it for about 2 months, but it's a really solid keyboard and comes with a lifetime warranty. If you're interested you should give it a shot and if you don't like it just return it :p. It's been close to a decade since I last regularly used an IBM keyboard so I can't say it's 1:1 in terms of quality (nor can I say it isn't) but it's the first time I liked a keyboard so much that I decided to instantly buy another one. Typing feels great, though I may need to rob Besada to see just how good of a substitute it is.

You'll need either a ps/2 port or a ps/2 to usb converter though (I'm using a converter at work, but my mobo at home as a ps/2 port. Have had 0 issues using it through a converter). Just noticed Amazon only has 1 left in stock, though I'm sure they'll get more. The price is actually a bit cheaper now than when I bought it too.

I am STILL using my 1st gen Zune as my primary music/podcast player. The thing is ROCK solid.

Why can't MS build an Xbox that endures a beating like the Zune does?

They did.... its called the Xbox.

Lol! I've played Wario Ware on Wii yes, but not long enough to see this! So it wasn't just me thinking this! :lol

No, it won't work, because it's an analog tuner and last year the entire nation switched over to digital.

The discman and a dedicated CD player. I'm attached to CDs, it allows me to focus on one album at a time.

I love my record player too, but just because I can easily find records for $1 at flea markets.

You can still buy these brand new, made in Lexington, KY, USA, from a company called Unicomp. I would never use any other keyboard for a desktop PC.

Hells yes. It's what I switched to for my PC. Such great feedback. I typed my best Typeracer race on it by far (was 132 wpm I believe...not as impressive as some here, but I was sure happy).

Nokia 3210. Still the best phone ever made?

Nokia has fallen far from this. Goddamit this cell phone was big in Europe back in the day. And everyones minds were blown when they saw 3310, and the new Snake game.

Yesss. Rocked a 120 for the longest time. Imported a Zune 80 when it came out and gifted the 120 to my sis who's Zen was breaking down. She used it until a couple months ago when I gave her the free iPod I got with my Mac.

Goddamn thing's a brick - in a good way.

But yeah, the old gameboy... unbeatable really. Even those blocky pixels look inviting somehow, like chewable candies

Before my Rio Karma, my first foray into portable MP3-dom was this:
41JRYCGQHNL.jpg

The iRiver iMP-350 SlimX. Shit battery life (even with the cumbersome external battery) but did me well on a few plane flights to and from Australia. Most solidly built bit of kit I'd had for ages (at the time).

Some of my favorite old tech:
Original GB. Just a classic. Felt solid and durable as hell. The original GBC was my favorite revision.

Sony Trinitrons: Amazing TVs and monitors.

Sony cassette walkmans: iconic

SNES: Still has the best controller on any console.

Was going to mention CRT monitors, specifically the ones that had a nice image and .20mm dot pitch. Trinitrons were great. Every once in a great while at work I come across some old giant NEC CRT or something that a graphics designer used. The ones I see in use always make me a bit sad. Motion on the screens look great, not to mention darker colors/gradients.

The Sony KV34HS420. Still to this day the best looking HDTV I have ever fucking owned. Paid 1400 for it back in 2005.

:D

I have been told about some of the pro high color gamut LCD monitors as being equal/better at color reproduction when compared to high end CRTs, but they all have ridiculously slow pixel response time, so they ghost the fuck out of everything (which is bad considering the loss of fluidity when comparing even a quick LCD). So really, they are best for photo work. I do think text is easier to read on an LCD, though. But I remember movies looking a bit nicer, no gamma banding to speak of and very nice, deep black levels. It's always just so bizarre to see how an image is on a CRT after staring at LCDs only for years. Almost a Neo "woah" moment.

Still have one in great shape, currently sitting unused in my bedroom. It's funny to me how a TV aimed at gamers, even back then, didn't have anything better than a composite input. :lol
