Uh, it's all right. I guess the shock of a "decent" Weezer album will wear off in a month or two, because I'm pretty convinced that's why people are going so far as to say it's as good as, or better than, Pinkerton. Crazy talk.

I think Weezer released Beverly Hills to deliberately lower our expectations. ;)

Only heard a few songs, but I like it so far. Very..... 80s

it is not better than blue or pinkerton, but it's way better than green or maladroit. in the end, it's not relevatory, but it's very enjoyable.

and i'm okay with that.

'hold me' is better than green and maladroit combined.

nope.
these first four songs include Make Believe.

I'm listening to it right now, and I guess I'm not in the mood for Weezer these days, because it's just... I think short of a bunch of songs along like the line of Hash Pipe, I wasn't going to be impressed. I just got bombarded with a slew of new stuff by Queens of the Stone Age, Stereophonics, Death From Above 1979, and slipped into the mood for music to fucking rock out to.

QofTSA killed my mind this year it was too good. This is a great effort from Weezer but not best album of the year by far. But still, its freaking good.

I love this album. It is not better than Blue or Pinkerton, but songs like Hold Me would not feel out of place on Pink.

The only thing I can really fault is that it seems Rivers turned up the emo on this one a little too much.

I love the 80s references.

weezer cribbing from the whole nuevo-new wave movement. a very enjoyable album so far, but i'm not one to call the last two albums bad at all. appreciate green because it was their 'safe' comeback album to settle themselves, and on the surface it's damn enjoyable at that. maladroit was just cuomo wanting to wig out and solo after people bitched he did nothing but follow the harmony the last album. another very superficial album but it had some good moments.

what i miss is the spontaneity of weezer. the big letdown of their post-pinkerton albums have been that they've sounded way too calculated and guarded. i'm not expecting the unbridled emotion of pinkerton, but hearing cuomo's voice crack and vibrate uncontrollably were weezer trademarks. that's gone.

'This is such a pity' owns me. I keep singing that chorus and the chorus for 'Perfect Situation'. This album sounds a like a polished Blue lite. Very eclectic sounding. I'd agree with the post on the albums post Pinky sounding too polished as that is what gave Weezer that extra somthing on the first 2, El Scorcho being a prime example of that. This album has more sonic depth then their last couple though.

I was surprised that Hold Me came out so good. It really evolved from a crappy demo to a damn good song.

I dunno. It's not as good as my first impression made me think. Perfect Situation, Such a Pity and Haunt You Every Day are my favs... the rest of the album is kind of "meh" to me.
I still say Maladroit is the best of their recent work. But none of this has anything on blue and pink.

Question, Weezer fans:
A handful of their demos recorded in 2002 are better than Green, Maladroit and Make Believe COMBINED.

WTF are they thinking? Living Without You for example. Why would you not put that on an album? Holy shit!

Also, is it me or does Make Believe have a depressing yet positive feel to it?

Yeah I was just thinking this. Deepest since Pinky. If this album were a can of paint I'd make it using 2 parts blue, 1 part pink, 1/2 part green and 1/2 part Maladroit.

It's good but not great. The lyrics are awful, but the thing as a whole is a big step forward for the band. If they can keep it together for one more album their sixth might be fairly close to Blue/Pinkerton. That is if they keep progressing.

What I'm amazed about is the fact that this took THREE YEARS. You would think that after three years they'd have something amazing or very different, not just decent.

Musashi Wins!

FLAWLESS VICTOLY!
Kind of dissapointing. I just can't remember much about it after a listen, which is not how I generally think of Weezer. A lot of bland choruses going on.

living without you is absolute shit, but then again, i pretty much hate everything from that recording era. a couple of the 2002 demos were promising (queen of earth), but they really are NOTHING compared to this. 367? modern dukes? mad kow? meh. this is way superior.

make believe is not blue, not pinkerton, but is the "different" kind of album i was expecting. i would be happy to own this record and play it, unlike maladroit. green i can still enjoy in the summer. island in the sun is a good tone, and the others are just ruined by boring production (i.e. smile was supposed to be a piano song).

i'm starting to look at Weezer as a lesser Pavement in terms of maturity and recording output. the promising first album, the seminal second album, then maturity hits and people start scratching their heads and go 'what the fuck?'. granted, Pavement's latter albums are vastly superior to latter Weezer albums, but the 'mature' sound and slick production values occurred in both as time wore on. how is it that Pollard, who's running on 80 right now, shows more emotion and spontaneity than Cuomo or Malkmus is sad.

Pinkerton is still my favorite, but Blue was damn good too. How I wish this were true...
Sorry, kablooey, I like you, but I gotta be consistent.

DO NOT ASK FOR PMs. Either find it yourself, or take the initiative and PM the person who has the info you want. These kinds of posts are just dumb.

I don't want to be disappointed with MB - so I have listened to only Beverly Hills and We are all on drugs - for the reason that I assume these to be the worst and so on may 10 when I pick up the record, the rest of the cd is amazing... will I be right?

I'm downloading right now... Hopefully it's as good as you guys say it is.

Also, fyi, it wasn't hard to find the leak via a search engine.

The rest of the album is a polar opposite sylistically. Most people who hate the two projected singles seem to really enjoy the rest. I don't know how you can hate "This is Such a Pity." LIL' DARRRRLIN

The opening riff to the 2nd song ........ brings a tear to my eyes.

How many years have we been waiting for something like this?

impression after a few listens:

LOSER ROCK RETURNS!
If Weezer came out with this album after Green, everything would have been a-ok.

keep waiting. the rest of the album really doesn't compare stylistically to the first few (great) songs at all.

Perfect Situation and This is Such a Pity are both fantastic...but the rest is purely meh for me. I mean, is "We are All on Drugs" supposedly the second single? Jesus...someone get this record label a clue.
