'On Borderlands 3, in Our Worst Hours, It Sometimes Felt Like Parody' — Gearbox Explains Borderlands 4's More Grounded Story

Thinks Microaggressions are Real
IGN interview with Gearbox narrative director Sam Winkler, lead writer Taylor Clark, and managing director of narrative properties Lin Joyce to learn more about why the team decided to create a more grounded story for Borderlands 4.

Winkler: I don't want to swing the needle too hard on that front. I am not anti-meme. In fact, hey, exclusive: There's a specific meme in this game, and I feel justified putting it in because I accidentally created it. Yes, I didn't mean for it to become a meme, but it became a meme, and it's in the video game. That is all I'm going to say.

Grounded usually means boring, safe these days. Sure Borderlands series had cringe, more so in Borderlands 3, but the humor was its style, it was unique. If I want a serious game I'll just play the million others. Comedy if done right, can be amazing, especially with a great villain like Jack was. I guess Ill see when it launches since I'm a big fan of the series. I'm more interested in the soundtrack than anything else since the series has amazing songs from masterminds such as Jesper Kyd and Michael McCann(deus ex hr, xcom, etc.)

I pressed the link.

I got an ad on top of an ad on the bottom, and one ad on top of the screen as well, only showing the middle part of the screen, that was instantly covered by a privacy policy notification. I can't see shit, it's all covered.

Fuck IGN and modern internet.

Sometimes I feel like the only person that liked Borderlands 1, 2, presequel, and 3
But a more grounded story for 4 sounds great

I enjoyed Borderlands 1,2, pre-seuel quite a bit and thought 3 and Tiny Tina was pretty dire. Those adventure games had such pathetic writing and characters too (especially the Gearbox written 2nd game), so I have zero hope for the story. Even the trailers for 4 have the most generic lazy basic shit dialogue / acting, so I don't see how they can say it will better when they've already shown it isn't.

I, like most people, liked the gameplay, but it needed to evolve a long time ago and not just what type of guns you can get. Saying all that, I'll probably try it unless it becomes known it is a disaster.
