OOTP Baseball 17 officially available - NeoGAF League Details

I haven't made the playoffs since season 2 ):

We performed like 7 games under expectations this season according to the Pythagorean record. Time for yet another manager? Hitting coach supposed to be good but my offense is trash and I thought I had at least some good contact players. Time to fire everybody!

Notes: WILD CARD GAMES
Miami @ Colorado
The Rockies take the W, 4-3, knocking the winning run in during the bottom of the 9th.

Cleveland @ Seattle
The Mariners won, 5-4, but the Indians took the game to the 14th inning.

The MVP of each game came from the losing team.

Is there a thought to ever starting fresh? As in, starting over in 2017. Just curious since we'll eventually hit a point where everyone is made up.

That would suck imo. I'm very attached to my imaginary players already. I love watching the history of the league build and write the story of itself over time. It would be a real gut-punch to just erase our history imo.

Yeah I'm not necessarily suggesting it. I know a lot of the fun is building for next year and beyond. I was just curious if it's ever been discussed. I know for me, some of the luster will come off when instead of managing Rizzo and Bryant, I'm setting up contracts for Billy-Jack Zorn and Colt Hemingway.

I've thrown the idea out at some point. I worry that being so far down the line, we'll never be able to get back over 20 members.
At the same time it is hard to give up on the players we have cultivated.

And go back to a reality where Mike Trout is an Angel? Never!

Probably in a year we might have to start over. Last time I played in one of these we usually started fresh each calendar year or so, but they were more hands off.

Phew what a game. My relief ace pitched 6 innings. Great bull pen management again Epstein, now I gotta take on the stupid Athletics without my Ace or best relief pitcher for game one.

Wouldn't be against the idea, getting more human players is what makes things fun, but would still continue this league on my own for a while lol.

BTW, these guys aren't all made up quite yet. My SS is currently a HS sophomore but actually is a real kid. Google some of your guys you think are made up, might surprise you.

But yeah, eventually they will be fictitious. Can see how starting fresh would be interesting. Would certainly change strategies of play though. Bigger, shorter contracts, less farm development, would lose a lot of things that make playing the game as a GM interesting.

Hope it's a great series!

I just looked up Herbert Iser, apparently he is playing CC baseball this year. I guess I shouldn't be that surprised since he's not one of my newest guys but I never really thought to look up anyone after the first draft.

My 2021 draft pick was apparently a kid who played HS Football in Texas. Creepy.

The effort the devs put into stuff like this is what makes OOTP GOAT tier.

If we wanted to run another league in parallel then I'd be down for that, but I'm not for giving up we are working on, too invested in these guys :)

Yeah, I can only speak for myself, and I know we are all interested in playing in our own way, but if we started over, I wouldn't be interested personally.

For me, the fun of this league is in building the history, giving our league a sense of weight and identity. We've got innumerable stories going on, some obviously on the surface like AL can't win the Series, but so many personal individual stories that would only be relevant to individual players/teams. Stories of your successes and tragedies that give context and meaning to what is happening now. Erasing that would defeat the purpose of this league imo.

Heck, I spend a fair bit of time going through the history of this league since we started looking at how things have unfolded over time, and not only in respect to my own team, but other teams and the league as a whole. There is so much fascinating information if you dig into it imo.

Again, I'm only stating how I feel, obviously. I'm not trying to be dismissive of those who feel otherwise.

Edit: Struggled against the O's this season, but I'm hoping that it's only small sample size. I've really focused on building a team with solid leadership for moments just like this, but I can't say I'm not anxious. There's always only one team standing in the end, so you bite your nails and hope for the best. Good luck DLC.

It is becoming an annual tradition to lead the division the entire year, only to blow it away in the last two weeks, capped off by a WC game loss.

We live the same life.

I'm proud of what this Indians team achieved this season. But because they fought their way to the WC game it's a really bummer to go out.
Over the last few seasons I have moved on from a lot of known talent in favor of my young drafted players and young prospects I had traded for. They all developed pretty well and I think it gives me something to look forward to.

On the upside/downside, my starting pitchers were able to avoid injury almost entirely this season. Really scared of what is to come next year.
My outfielders probably combined for missing over a season this year. With many injuries at second and third base as well.

Indians will have a shot next year of the pitching continues and I can find a new part or two at bat.

:(. Getting my shit pushed in by Minny. Danner is officially in the bullpen next year, probably my closer. I was hoping he'd develop more, since he had ace potential, but I don't think a starter can be consistently successful with only 2 pitches. He'll wreck havoc in the pen. I'll try to have him used multiple innings. I've got enough pitching depth so my rotation should still be okay.

David Bedgood versus the Brewers in the regular season 8-24 8 HR 13 RBI

David Bedgood versus the Brewers in the playoffs 1-7 1 BB 3 K

Meanwhile Tucker Neuhaus is 3-4 with 2 HR for the Brewers.

Have good feelings about the AL this year. Unless eznark's ghost really steps up.

Also, I wish I could appoint players as managers. I'd have Mauer do the player/manager thing so hard. The only reason I keep resigning the guy is for veteran leadership.

Spoilers for our human series:
Twins lead 2-0, with a tight game one and mild run away game 2.

Congrats on winning the divisional series Cheeto!

Thought I had the team this year, but it wasn't to be.

Good luck to all the hyumahns the rest of the way.

I'm happy I left Phil Hughes on my playoff roster. I had seriously considered dropping him for a defensive OF or another young pitcher, but he's the only Twins player left from year-one GOBL, and I wanted to give him a chance to stick around for his final run with the Twins. He rewarded me by giving 2.2 innings of solid relief and getting the win out of the pen in game 1, so I feel relieved about that decision.

I won't be picking up his contract option- too many young guys that need to be brought up - but I felt like his career with us earned him a chance in the post-season, despite struggling down the stretch and losing his spot in the rotation towards the end of this year.

I like to envision all the make believe tv executives throwing themselves out of their virtual windows with this LCS lol. Col-Mil and Sea-Min would deliver amazingly awful ratings. (Not saying anything about the teams themselves, which are great).

I dunno, I mean Minnesota has the likely AL MVP in Jarid Joseph. Seattle has the reigning MVP in Johan Quevedo, the former best player alive in Mike Trout.

As for the series itself, I gambled on the first two games because I wasn't sure my top two starters were rested enough. The gamble failed and now I have to figure out what to do for the next couple of games.

Really loving the makeup of this team. (Sorry Cheeto, I know it stings to get so close and then watch it end.)

I'm beyond thrilled at my promotion of Jay Baller. I was really hesitant to bring up a rookie ball guy, but the more I sifted through his results over the years and looked at the way his teams had played, I felt like I had to give him an opportunity, and I think that move, along with the overall team leadership, free agent signing of Piscotty, and rule 5 pickup of C Thomas Dillard (
Still can't believe I got him, as I was picking so late. I almost didn't bother putting him on my board, assuming he would be gobbled up. Thanks AZ! He's been great all year and had an amazing post-season.
), and the overall quality from 1-25 has the Twins in a good spot and really made me fall in love with this group.

I think we're the best team going into this series, but man I hope we finish the deal in this Midwest matchup. Do it for the meat-bags guys! (And the AL!)

#TeamHumans

Keep your game 7 starter away from the farm equipment this week.

It still hurts.

Crap! Everything will be in farming country too, lol. Stay in the city boyz! ;)

And I know it hurts. Man, I'm still tender about losing to STL a few years ago, although that team was nowhere near the quality of this group. If this group were to lose, it would hurt much more than that series.

I feel like everything has been building to this crescendo for the Twins and all the pieces are in place, and if it lands with a thud, it will take a nice bite out of me, for sure.

That city is like 45 minutes north of me

The only reason I know of it is because it's a city you pass through on the way to casinos in Oklahoma

Half-way there, although I hope my decision to only carry 4 OFs doesn't come back to bite me. I really wanted to put Tanner English on the roster as a 5th OF/defensive option, but didn't. Hopefully Taylor's injury turns out to just be a day-to-day thing, because Conine in left is not ideal from a defensive standpoint, by any means.

When that happened to me I found a scout with similar attributes for the sake of continuity.

Likely what I'd do. Glad Dillard worked out for you, my scout hated him as soon as he was hired and I had 3 other C prospects jump ahead of him. Fortunately I'm not lacking at C but still sucks to lose a guy like that for nothing. Rule 5 has been kind to me too, I'll have 3 former Rule 5 starters next year most likely.
