- LA Times Video Chat: Tatiana Maslany and the 'joy and nightmare' of 'Orphan Black'
"Orphan Black" star Tatiana Maslany, a freshly minted best actress prize winner, joined us for a live chat to talk about her role as Sarah Manning and half a dozen other clones on the acclaimed new BBC America sci-fi series.

The buzzed-about show has a loyal fan base from around the world, and Maslany was kind enough to say hello (or "hola," depending on the nationality) to many who had joined the conversation, while also discussing the joy and nightmare of playing so many parts on the series. Wigs, wardrobe and singing were also popular topics as well as the music playlists Maslany makes for each of her characters. She was a delight, which you'll realize soon enough if you listen in.

I just saw a deranged Ukrainian clone dancing in a posthumanist nightclub with a severed mantail in her hand.

I cannot form further words.

I really can't stop gushing at how GOOD of an actress Tatiana is.

I was kind of meh about Helena since the whole crazy psicho girl with messy hair and odd head tilting has been played out to triteness, but she managed to give her character a lot of life and charm. Her little trivial conversation with Paul's photograph had me in stitches ("I went working and shopping") and so did her table manners. The way she gives every character her own body language is incredible.

Give this girl all the awards.

yes.
I also love felix though. without him a lot of charme would be lost too, all the actors are pretty good (paul is very wooden yes, but I think it kinda suits his role)

Yeah, she's simply amazing. I had heard over and over how good her performance was, but it still blew me away when I finally watched the show.

It's nice when something actually lives up to, and even arguably exceeds, the hype for once.

- HitFix with a few thoughts on Maslany's Emmy chances
Tatiana Maslany, "Orphan Black"

Nomination Status: I was so, so, so close to predicting a nomination for her, but I just couldn't do it.

In Her Favor: When it comes to degree-of-difficulty, nobody in this category can compete with Tatiana Maslany, who played a seven or eight characters who are clones, but still talked differently, moved differently and might as well have been different people. My favorite thing is seeing Maslany recently in appearances and realizing that the clone she looks and speaks most like is... none of them. The Canadian actress didn't take the shortcut of playing a single clone as a version of herself. I just find that awesome. "Orphan Black" is one of the pleasant surprises of the year and it works 98% because of Maslany. And momentum is starting to build. She won that Critics Choice thingie. She earned a TCA Award nomination and I'd bet she wins. And BBC America has finally, perhaps a bit late, realized what it has and I'm looking at an LA Times front page full-page ad buy right now. With the number of people who are only discovering "Orphan Black" now, a month after its finale, I'm prepared to guess that if Emmy voting were held next month at this time, Maslany would get a nomination. Will she have a sufficiently dedicated fanbase in place now to pull off the major upset? It's gonna be SO close.

Working Against Her: Four months ago, nobody knew who she was at all and BBC America barely knew how to promote "Orphan Black." If you go back and watch the original ads, you can tell that BBC America never thought for a single second that they might have an Emmy contender. Did they realize too late? It's just SO hard for an actor to go from "total unknown" to "major award nominee" in just a few months. Maslany has the performance to pull off that trick, but geez...

- NY Mag: The Orphan Black Showrunners Answer Vulture Readers’ Burning Questions
Earlier this week, Vulture asked readers to come up with questions for Orphan Black showrunners Graeme Manson and John Fawcett. And you did! They didn't answer every question, of course — especially ones that would spoil season-two plot points — but they did respond to several frank inquiries. It goes without saying that there are spoilers ahead for anyone who hasn't watched the entirety of Ophan Black's first season. Read on to find out about Cosima's sexuality, the tricky wine-pour scene, and when they came up with the idea to give someone a tail.

Damn. She's dead dead.

:(
I'm pouring out some over-sugared jello on the curb for our girl. I admire their conviction, but I'll miss Helena.

I liked their answer regarding long term plotting. Seems like they have their act together on that end.
Q: How much of the story's arc and overall mythology is planned out versus made up as you go along? Do you have an endgame planned?

Mason: We had such a long development period with Orphan Black. John and I were working on it together — our concept of clones and the depth of what the conspiracy might be and the Zeitgeist issues of the day around cloning and genetics — so we have a really good idea of our long game. The trick is, of course, you don’t know how many seasons you’re going to run. So we have an end point in mind, but we have to be flexible enough to have that end point stretch out further ahead of us and come up with more twists in the middle. We had a very good idea of what the season-two arc would be and what our goal was for season three. If we get to season three, that’s when we go, “okay, that end game we had in mind — do we push it further down the road, or do we gobble it up now and come up with something else?”

Add me into the list of Orphan Black supporters. Just watched the entire show in 2 days.

Best new show of the season so far. The entire show hinged on the main actress's (Tatiana Maslany) ability to pull off multiple personalities convincingly and she did. Each clone had a distinct set of mannerisms, characteristics, flaws and foibles.

Well done.

Where the heck was she 4 years ago? She could've really done some justice as the lead of Dollhouse instead of that wooden hack Eliza Dushku.

Also, Cosima is best clone imo. That bubbly personality, the brains and the locks are just perfect. Helena comes in a close second.

Uh, sorry, you spelled 'Allison' wrong.

I don't know how she really sounds, but her English accent sucks. Maybe because all the other ones are really good.

shame on me, if she is really english.

I just watched the finale. Terrific episode with some really powerful scenes. Sarah's crying felt so real it made me feel bad about her shit luck, Alison's story added some genuinely mean streak to the show and Helena's death left me mourning the early loss of what could have been one of the best characters in recent TV history. It's a shitty thing she had to die this early, but it shows that the people running this show have balls. Real, big, round balls. Also, now I'm scared shitless about Cosima :(

That said, there's something about the DNA sequence that bugs me the hell out. The strand literally has a codified message saying that organisms and their derivatives are patented property, but surely they are human beings first and foremost, and no court in the world would ever allow them to be treated as a box of Pop-Tarts. Am I missing something? Paraphrasing some io9 reader, this is about as enforceable as a suit against that dude who stole a brick of coke from you.

Random musings:
  • Hip-hop abs. Now I get the hype.
  • Holy shit, Alison's story just turned grimdark for real.
  • I actually feel happy when Cos finds some joy in something. Her enthusiasm is contagious (and let's hope it's only her enthusiasm).
  • Everybody is having a rough time in this show, but Sarah is the real punching bag. Man...
  • I'm not really into accents, but Sarah's makes me all hot and bothered, specially her "whats" (wha?) when she finds something surprising or hard to believe.
  • How come monitors don't get to develop feelings for their subjects? SPECULATION AHEAD:
My guess is that Mrs S used to be one of them, maybe a surrogate mother acting on behalf of Dr. Leekie, until she grew a conscience and ran away from the Dyad Institute. Hence her comments about not trusting Siobhan.
  • Matt Frewer was genetically engineered to be as creepy as a human can be.
  • I'm not familiar with the soundtrack's composer, but he's made a terrific job so far.
  • Fuck the awards, Tatiana Maslany deserves six salaries. I honestly cannot believe how many times I had to remind myself that she was the same person playing all the clones.
  • I think it's kinda cool that so many people are discovering this show after it aired. This bodes well for S2.

I think testicles are supposed to be ovular, though.

Yeah, me too. My brain definitely perceives each clone as being portrayed by a different actress. It's remarkable.

This definitely has the feel of a show that will have a much larger fanbase down the road.
Happening a bit faster than I thought it would :D

BBCA still has the entire season available on demand and it's helping tremendously. I wish every channel was as smart with their shows.

Cos is hot shit. She's bubbly and funny and does geeky exceedingly well. I also love how she shows a lot more teeth than the rest of the clones when she smiles.

I don't smoke, but I'd totally share a big fat bowl with her.

Sorry guys, I just have thing for 'locks... and glasses.... and nerds....

I will admit that Allison's character got really fleshed out towards the end and giving her some breathing space was the best thing the showrunners ever did for the show.

Didn't dig her at all in the beginning, but am now solidly neutral.

I just noticed that the writers offed a grand total of three clones in just one season. Better not get too enamored of Sarah/Alison/Cosima. It looks like the show could pull the rug from under any of them at any given moment and move on with it.
