OS X El Capitan [OT]

Hmm. When I install office 2016 the microsoft fonts are not showing up in font book but they work in Word. how can I enable these fonts system wide so I can use them in other applications? I don't remember this being a problem before.

I fresh-installed El Capitan on my Macbook Pro (Early 2011 with an SSD) and I'm seeing no major flaws.

iTunes still sucks, but everything else seems just about hunky dory. I wouldn't say performance is better, but there's less hitching maybe.

I have an early 2011 as well but haven't done the upgrade yet. Why does iTunes suck?

Why can't they just copy Windows snapping to the side instead of this shit split view? Why make it so complicated?!

Because Windows sometimes snaps windows when you don't want it to. With this you have the one extra click of opening mission control, but it's a more deliberate action.

Not really much here if you aren't all-in with the Apple ecosystem is there? I guess it runs a bit better on my 2012 MBA than Yosemite.

I wish I were joking but the font change is probably the most exciting part of this update for me.

Personally, I think the split view (and even add full screen view to that) implementation on Mac is awful. BetterTouchTool does it better and its been available for years. I still remember when Mac users denounced the Windows-style maximize button claiming that a windowed applications workflow was much more efficient lol. And now there's a much worse version of the maximize button.

I still maintain that view; I don't use maximize for anything. Spaces + Cmd Tabbing between applications works better for my brain.

Metal actually benefits Intel graphics the most (going back to 2012's HD4000 series).

Yea they really threw a bone to the original rMBP folks with their HD4000 straining to do lots of effects with all those pixels. Sounds like the performance is now where it always should have been.

I've been using Windows snapping since it came out and it NEVER happened to me. That sounds like very poor excuse.

I haven't upgraded yet, but from the reviews I've read it seems Apple's solution leaves a lot to be desired. I currently use a free program called Spectacle (there are other options as well: BetterTouchTool, Moom, etc.) and it seems to do a much better job of arranging my open windows than Apple's full screen implementation.

I don't have a Windows 10 machine, but from what I've seen they seem to have perfected window management by borrowing the things that OS X does well (Mission Control/Spaces) and combining it with Aero Snap.

Yup. They even added virtual desktops to Windows 10. There's nothing wrong with borrowing ideas :)

I tried using BetterTouchTool but for some reason I don't trust external programs on OS X. Maybe I'll just go back to that...

With expose/mission control I usually never feel the need to split windows when using a Mac.

It is nice sometimes when you want to be viewing two documents next to each other, but for the most part it is not a compelling feature and I don't find its current implementation something I will be using a lot.

Just got round to updating my 2009 iMac.

How long did the optimisation take for you all?

Very stuttery at the moment but it's literally just now finished updating.

Nice!

I'm able to use the transparency effects-enabled on my early 2011 Macbook Pro while connected to an external 2560 x 1600 monitor.

Before with transparency on, windows would chug juuuust enough to be annoying. Now it's all silky shmoove.

Leave it on overnight for two days if you want to not wait. Otherwise it could take a week.

Has anyone noticed that after using split screen with Safari and another app, if you close the 'other app' and make Safari full screen on it's own again, that the menu bar is messed up? If you scroll through web pages, they pop out of the top of the menu rather than disappear beneath it. Odd.

Go to the iCloud Drive options and uncheck Textedit.

Checking on my work comp with iCloud not enabled for TextEdit, I still get a file browser. I dunno how to make it just automatically open a new doc though, doesn't seem to be any option in prefs (this has been a thing since at least 10.10 or maybe 10.9.)

How are they different?!!!

Window snapping maximizes, goes left half, or goes right half and can be combined with the windowed desktop so you can ran age Windows on the side.

Split view is 2 full screen apps with an adjustable divider. There is no Windows desktop usability in this mode. You can literally only do 2 things at once on a split-view screen.

There is a difference. Which is why split view plus Windows snapping with BTW combined with good full screen apps and multiple desktops makes a great team!

Windows snapping attaches the program to different sides of the screen, split view actually sends the programs to a new desktop where the two programs are the only thing that exist there

I have BetterSnapTool for my snapping needs, but can definitely see utility in Split View

Hey, I ran into this issue too. For whatever reason, all 500MB of Microsoft fonts are now duplicated in the application bundle for each individual Office app. Woo.

Anyway, to get to them, choose "Show Package Contents" on Word, Excel, whatever, and go to Contents > Resources > Fonts. Then you can copy those into ~/Library/Fonts.
I wonder if you could get away with doing that and then deleting all the duplicate font folders within the apps themselves. Haven't tried it, though.

Safari's Preference pane is a bit odd with all the icons bunched up to the left and still plenty space on the right.

I can't view JPGs with a size of 6000x4000 in Preview anymore. The pic shows up, then the whole window goes either grey or green after a second. Smaller JPEGs and RAW files work fine.

Safari and Finder have also crashed once since I upgraded yesterday, which never happened to me in Yosemite.

SMB support is still FUBAR.

Not impressed with the supposed stability of El Capitan.

Animations are much more fluid though, I'll give them that. And I love the new font.

So I had been using the El Capitan PB on my work laptop and I ran into problems with compatibility with work stuff that did not support El Capitan yet...

... so now I want to stop running the PB's on my work laptop.

... Problem is that it auto-installed the 10.11.1 PB recently.

So if I download and install the OSX El Capitan public release, then will it install OK? Will it mess up my files on my computer to go from 10.11.1 PB to 10.11?

Would I be better of just turning off auto update and waiting for the 10.11.1 public release before getting off the PB train?

Thanks again!

I'm loving split view. This comes in handy with much of the work I do on my MacBook. However I did encounter an oddity. When testing spilt view with my browser as the first item and itunes as the second, it produced a 1/3 2/3 split instead of 50/50.

Still amazes me Adobe can't ship compatibility patches for its software on release.

They are not great at putting out timely updates. They've been talking about the October updates for their video products for awhile now, but apparently forgot to prepare for the new Mac operating system that is on an annual release schedule.

You are describing difference between having virtual desktops and not having them. Functionally Windows split screen and "Split View" are not going to be used differently. Especially now that Windows also has virtual desktop.

It's really messed up that there's no easy way to look at 2 things at once while using OS X.

is Safari: AirPlay to stream to TV an El Capitan feature only or is it in Safari itself?

i want to use it for RedZone this Sunday but i don't want to update my OS until more bugs and stuff are worked out

Safari - Reload All Tabs option gone? Used to be Right-Click on the + button on the far right.
