A browser that doesn't have favicons and only gets feature updates once a year is not a serious one. Safari is good but it could be so much more.

Safari now supports SVG "favicons", see http://blog.iconfactory.com/2015/11/the-new-favicon/

Safari is also updated many times a year - it was updated 8 times in 2015 alone. The Webkit engine gets updated multiple times a year as part of some of the previously mentioned updates.

Pretty sure the lack of favicons is an aesthetic choice. I just wish it was an option that was just off by default. They look really nice when they exist in tabs. Shame SafariStand has seemingly died again because of Apples fighting against SIMBL. Bah.

Other than that I love Safari for its integration and speed. I left Chrome when it had become a complete pile of shit. I won't even bother going back now.

And no website uses them and it's just for pinned tabs so... so what? Safari doesn't have favicons just some grey letters for pinned tabs.

I specifically said feature updates, I know it gets several security updates a year. The one big update a year philosophy is a bad one. I would like Safari to improve every month too and while I am at it for OS X to get off the yearly update cycle.

Native support for keyword search. Favicons. An extension store that isn't a barren wasteland of outdated crap. Smooth, lag-free UI. Blazingly fast page load times. Cookie whitelisting and being able to delete them when the browser is closed. Being able to reopen multiple closed tabs! No keyboard lag.

God, I missed Chrome.

Random question that maybe some one can answer. Does the gog versions of fallout 1+2 still work on the newest is? I saw some one on some forum say his stop working and it's really the big reason I haven't updated yet (want to at least finish fallout 2 first if that is the case).

Yeah I don't use or care about any of that stuff. I like having a Fast browser that is secure and saves my bookmarks and works flawlessly across my OSX and iOS devices.

I really lol safari bookmark sync and being able to load tabs from other devices and close tabs on other devices.

I know chrome does that too. But chrome is not a viable option on iOS to me. And I'd prefer to limit googles access to all of my passwords etc.

10.11.2
The OS X El Capitan v10.11.2 update improves the stability, compatibility, and security of your Mac, and is recommended for all users.

This update:
  • Improves Wi-Fi reliability
  • Improves the reliability of Handoff and AirDrop
  • Fixes an issue that may cause Bluetooth devices to disconnect
  • Fixes an issue that prevented Mail from deleting messages in an offline Exchange account
  • Fixes an issue that prevented importing photos from an iPhone to a Mac using a USB cable
  • Improves iCloud Photo Sharing for Live Photos
  • Fixes an issue that may prevent Mail from completing the upgrade
  • Fixes an issue that may prevent signing in to FaceTime and Messages

Enterprise content:
  • Resolves an issue where reinstalling a configuration profile containing a certificate payload causes the certificates to be removed instead of updated
  • Resolves an issue that caused multiple authentication prompts in Safari when using NTLM authentication
  • Allows for deferred enablement when using the fdesetup command to enable FileVault with mobile accounts

There's also a 'Don't call it a comeback!' update to the official Twitter app. Didn't they show that it some Twitter keynote months ago, oh well.
Edit: Here's the update notes on that:
  • Inline video playback - You’ll see videos play directly in your feed.
  • GIFs support - See animations without leaving your timeline.
  • Group Direct Messages - Create and receive private notes with up to 50 people.
  • Mute - Silence specific accounts so you no longer see them in your feed.
  • Today Center Widget - Get your Twitter Highlights right on your desktop.
  • Dark Theme - Now you can see the world in black or white.
  • Updated design - Get the latest improvements to icons, buttons, and interactions.
  • Quote Tweet - Add your two cents to any Retweet.

That fix to Mail is a great big check for me. Super annoying that it wasn't working that way before.

Is El Capitan better now? I have a 250GB 840 Evo SSD i want to put in my MacBook Pro mid 2009 and i'd obviously install the newest OSX when i do that. Right now i have the original HDD with Yosemite and it's a bit slow.

I run 10.11 El Capitan on a 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5 mid-2011 iMac with 16GB RAM and a Fusion drive (120GB SSD + 500GB HDD)

it's quicker than I need it to be.

Malwarebytes

Oh I never use that kind of stuff on Macs. Those programs are usually horrible and not updated fast enough anyway.

You can try force quitting the finder and then try force quitting the installation.

If that wasn't working I might force restart the whole computer by holding down the physical power button until it restarts.

Been using Macs since forever. I only use apps from signed developers or software that I really trust. I set OSX up to not run programs from unsigned developers or programs that I have previously approved. Ans I Never had a virus or malware. I find that software to dramatically slow down my computer and not give me any additional protection.

Yeah, I've been a Mac user for 15+ years now and have never felt the need to install something like that. Aside from exploits, which are pretty much patched super fast anyway, it's very hard to get anything accidentally installed on your machine.

Numerous times, while wandering around the more seedy areas of the web (porn) I've had browser tabs open that try to trick me, some that have frozen my browser (Firefox specifically for when I am doing that kind of stuff. Keeps that shit out of Safari) in a JavaScript loop ("We detected illegal stuff on your computer and we locked it! Send us large amounts of untraceable cryptocurrency to unlock it!") that is bypassable by opening a new window and disabling JavaScript then force quitting the browser. Seriously, the JavaScript "prevent tab from closing" function needs to be removed. It's NEVER used for good. Only evil.) and have had DMGs downloaded to my desktop in the hopes that I might be stupid and might try to mount, open and install what's inside. Really, you just have to be smart. Never enter your password for apps you didn't ask to install (Or don't know who made it and aren't familiar with them) and think outside the box if you're going to sites that like to fill empty spaces with enticing fake ads and download links. Oh, and MacKeeper. Keep away from MacKeeper. I don't know why anyone would install that shit, but it's advertised everywhere. More than half the pop-under tabs I've had open have been for it.

Basically: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4cAfPWgiE7E

Use your head and you're fine.

That's not to say you shouldn't install protection if you want to. It's just not as needed as you think. The last time (And only time) I saw a virus on Mac OS was System 7. And it was benign. (In that it literally did one thing. Copy itself onto all system extensions so you can't remove it easily. But it didn't actually hurt anything.)

I try to be as smart as possible, and have been quite successful. However, a program I downloaded ended up installing some adware the other month and I was glad that my antivirus caught that.

Also, a shield I set up caught and blocked a malicious image in a NeoGAF thread.

MacStories: Five Years of Mac App Store

Let me celebrate the anniversary by pointing out yet another scummy shithead spamming the store with scummy, shitty apps.

converter0mp81.png

name and shame. And what was malicious about it?

I can't remember what thread it was in, or who it was, not that I planned to name and shame. I just got a warning saying that the shield had blocked a malicious image, and it was the first time I'd ever seen such a thing.

I re-opened the thread, and that was it.

If Apple would just crack down on developers who pull this stuff, it wouldn't be as bad. Put this in the TOS.

They need to go over the whole store with a fine-tooth comb and throw that shit out. Seriously, they should just outright remove the apps without even telling the developers. And they might as well just ban the responsible devs from publishing apps for, I don't know, five years or so. Fuck them. Zero tolerance.

But I guess to Apple it's more important to be able to pat themselves on the back and boast about having a million bazillion apps in the store at the next WWDC than to offer a quality shopping experience.

OMG I have an important pages document that I use every day that just today it has been crashing my finder every single time I click on it... what do I do?

Finder crashes? Not Pages?
Have you tried a different user account?

Yeah finder. I only have one user account on this computer.

EDIT: I copy and pasted the text in the file to a new file in MS Word 2015 and deleted the file by dragging it to the trash without double clicking it. Maybe I'll go back to pages later, maybe not.

1Password 6 is out. The update is free.

Interesting tidbit:
iCloud sync
Surprise! Thanks to some pretty significant changes Apple made recently, we are now able to offer iCloud sync to customers who bought 1Password for Mac directly from the AgileBits Store.

Not sure whether I'm gonna use that. I have my doubts about iCloud's reliability.

Interesting. Actually I'm gonna test it out. I've been using DropBox but now I'll test out iCloud and see how well it works.

Edit: How the heck do you make the Mac version force a sync? I created a new test entry on my iPhone and had to sync it manually, but now I can't get it to sync to my Mac. Is it on a timer? Why isn't there a Sync Now option? The iOS version syncs every time you launch it. The Mac one doesn't? Really silly.

Edit: Ah, there we go. It only syncs when you unlock. So if you leave it open on either device, it'll never sync. That's silly. Probably on a timer though. No idea what the countdown is though. Either way it seems to be syncing reliably right now. (It's the apps themselves that really should be more aggressive about syncing whenever changes are made.)

I'm still having wifi stability issues despite a fast connection. Is Apple planning on fixing the broken cursor issue where the cursor resets itself during typing?

Not specifically an El Capitan thing but I have just seen that a new Twitter for OSX App Store update came out a week ago and adds in all the missing features: mute function (thank god), group messaging, gifs, videos, quote retweets and dark theme + general UI update.

Its taken far too long but I'm so pleased its finally fucking here! I know Tweetdeck has most/all of those features already but I've always thought it sucked, I prefer the single app that doesn't take up as much room.

So good, now they need to fix the live stream issue that is getting worse.

It's pretty cool that they managed feature parity for the non-App Store version, and cool that it's a free update. I'll continue using Dropbox to sync though. Always running out of iCloud storage as it is.

The 1Password database doesn't take up enough space to even matter anyway. As long as both options work fine I guess.

I'm looking for a free, but reliable malware scanner which doesn't need to be installed somewhere deep in my system. I don't need real-time protection or anything like that; I just want to run a complete scan to make sure everything's fine and uninstall it again. Which one would you recommend?

I don't pay for subscription services unless I absolutely must. They seem cheap like that but then you sign up for a bunch of cheap services and they start adding up! (Also because it's $1.50 in Australia.)
As long as both options work fine I guess. 👍🏻

ClamXav and Avira seem to be the two most popular choices. I'm gonna try the former.
