OS X Yosemite [OT]

Hello! Just found this thread.

I'm running the latest build of the Yosemite public beta and I've been encountering significant Wi-Fi issues on my MacBook Pro after waking from sleep.

Internet access is unavailable for several minutes and seemingly non-existent during Power Nap. However, access to the web-based control panel of my router and any web site through its IP address is fine—so I'm putting this down to some sort of DNS issue.

My router uses Google DNS and my devices use my router's DNS settings, not their own. Only my Mac is having connectivity issues. Similarly, my router is able to ping Google.com, however my Mac is not—it must be the IP address of Google.com. Again, after several minutes, everything starts magically working again. Nothing out of the ordinary appears to be lurking in Console, so I'm really confused as to what the problem is.

Any idea what might be going on? Thanks!

Update to the stable 10.10.3 then get back to us :)

Is it out yet? I'm on 14D131. I think that's the latest available to non-developers.

I think this might be an issue with discoveryd. I've killed the process and trashed the .plists. Gonna reboot and see if it sticks!

edit: After trashing the .plists, iTunes refused to open. Weird. Put them back and iTunes is fine and the issue seems to be fixed. For now...

What's this code? The recovery Key?
No, the secure randomized xxxx-xxxx-xxxx code all these cloud services have switched to for people who use two-factor. They don't let you choose your password when using two-factor and instead give you a key to use as your password instead for certain services.

For instance I have two-factor turned on for Google and DropBox and, since the silly Fappening situation, Apple. Each company gives you the key, which you can change at any time if you want, and tells you to write it down and keep it secure. I take a screenshot and copy the text and put both in a secure note in 1Password in case I ever need it.

I like two-factor for security and peace of mind reasons, but damn if it isn't slightly inconvenient sometimes. Apple for some reason doesn't seem to distinguish between whether you need to use your normal iTunes password or your iCloud key so you have to use your head and think. I had to enter both a few times to get it right.

I had no idea that my activating two-factor was the reason my iCloud syncing of certain things (iBooks settings, iMessages and SMS syncing, but not Notes and other things for some reason) as it never really made it clear to me until yesterday. I had to turn iMessage off for a few months because I thought my phone was fucked up or something.

Isn't that the recovery key? I have 2-factor turned on and it gives me this recovery key, but never had to use it. It says you need 2 things to get into your account: your password, your trusted device or your recovery key. Did you not set a trusted device?

Of course I did. I have done it all properly now. All I know is it's a randomized password I am supposed to use to log into iCloud instead of my normal one. And if someone tries to log in from somewhere else it will alert me on my phone.

They call it an "App specific password" not a key.

Also I use it on Steam too. But they don't give a key. They just ask you to log in yourself and confirm you want to allow a specific device to log in.

We don't really need to have this conversation since I'm not having a problem. I was just making an observation and a face palm after figuring out the solution to a problem I was having.

Ah, I was just wondering. I was referring to 2-factor for login, but you seem to be talking about app-specific 2-factor, which I don't have.

Nope. Still intermittent. Goddammit.

Ok so as mentioned in a recent post myself and my wife have different logins and different Photo libraries. Tonight I exported her library to her shared folder, then I imported all her photos into my Photos library, then put my library on my shared folder in the hopes we would both have access to it and be able to add new photos to it.

I made sure her account has Read Write access to the library as well.

While logged into her account I 'Option' clicked on Photo and chose the shared library, and I get this error;
"An error occurred while repairing permissions. Photos was unable to repair permissions on your library"

As a test I created a test library while under the wife account and put that in her shared folder. Then tried to open that under my account and got the same error as above.
I ran disk utility and nothing came up regarding the Photos Libraries.

Any thoughts?

My 2013 MacBook Air is way slower booting since the latest update.
Okay, so I looked into it or rather did a quick search since it was just too odd.

So, yeah somehow the startup disk wasn't defaulted anymore or something, reselecting it fixed it, pretty weird (Link).

Well now this is interesting:

Flashlight - The missing plugin system for Spotlight

I have to try that when I'm back home.

Version 1 is out, and it looks damn good. More than 200 plugins available right now.

68747470733a2f2f7261772e6769746875622e636f6d2f6e6174652d706172726f74742f666c6173686c696768742f6d61737465722f496d6167652e706e67

The ability to show HTML content is a huge plus over Alfred.

For some reason, the GitHub README still calls it "very rough" and a "horrendous hack". Maybe they forgot to update the description.

Yeah, never mind that. More details at MacStories:

Nate Parrott said:
Flashlight is still a “hack” in the sense that it hooks into the system without using undocumented APIs. Dropbox did similarly “hacky” stuff with OS X until very recently — it’s just a matter of polishing the code-injection process and testing it widely (which the community has done a fantastic job with). 1.0 works well because it’s had a huge open beta.

Yosemite 10.10.3 Supplemental Update is out

The OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 Supplemental Update fixes a video driver issue that may prevent your Mac from starting up when running certain apps that capture video.

Apparently the random Safari freezes and laggy text input under Yosemite is a AMD 79X0 issue, and 10.10.3 doesn't solve it. Drat.

Wow, this looks so much better than the initial alpha versions. Great to see that it's grown into a real application. I'll definitely be installing this tonight.

Apparently. I just searched for an older screenshot:

The first two sections in the bottom have been swapped, and the File Cache has been removed from the third section.

Now they are pointing out that utilized memory is essentially only the app, wired and compressed one and cache is a different entry.

Haven't used OS X in a while, but can Safari not play videos from HBO or Gamespot/Giant Bomb? I keep getting the "please use a browser that supports html 5 or flash" error.

Alternatively to the above, make sure plugins are enabled for those sites. Open preferences, go to security and click the button by the plugins checkbox and set to always allow.

I just upgraded to Yosemite last night because of the new Photos app. It's been years since I used iPhoto because of how slow and bloated it got. It looks like it imported everything into the Photos app successfully.

Is it possible to move the photos to a NAS, similar to how you can transfer an iTunes library? I tried searching for solutions but never found any clear instructions for it.

iTunes users, can you help?

Ever since the first Yosemite Public Beta in July 2014 I have had trouble getting my artwork appear properly on films and videos I transfer to my iPhone.

There is no problem at all with Music album artwork, this works fine 100%.

But for Videos & TV Shows that I never purchased through iTunes, the artwork rarely shows correctly when I have transferred over to my iPhone.

Even TV shows or Movies that had artwork functioning fine on my iPhone in Mavericks and iOS 7 has stopped working with Yosemite and iOS 8.

Is it a Yosemite thing? An iOS 8 thing?

Went to my genius appointment, and they offered to replace my logic board, see if that fixed my issues. The guy thought it might be GPU related.

He also noticed I'd been in a few times for repairs, so he went to speak to who I assume was his manager out the back. He came back and offered me a brand new MBP, to keep my 'faith' of AppleCare intact, basically.

Suffice to say I went for the new Mac option, it was free. Have to wait a few days for it to arrive in-store though.

Has the non-retina MBP mid-2012 model been refreshed since then? He said I'd get the equivalent of what I had in mine, but the latest model, 8GB Ram, 2.9GHz i7, but the HDD will be bumped up to 1TB because they don't make the 750GB anymore.

Ah fair enough. Can't complain about a new model though. I'll see slightly better performance due to the 1TB drive, denser platter = faster speed/access, right?

I was really taken aback when he said it would be free. I can't fault the Genius bar, at least in my local store. Lovely folks.

Assuming it's a 7200RPM drive, theoretically, although I've never seen much difference between sizes of the same rotational speed. You'll get a much bigger boost from an SSD.

New and shiny is nice though.

They treat you well if you have AppleCare. And if you've been in for a number of times for the same issue it's actually more economical to just give you a replacement as well as much better for customer satisfaction.

The lag and slowdowns in Safari are insane at times. Just infuriating.

And I recently noticed that even on iOS, Chrome is often way faster than Safari. Mobile Safari also occasionally suffers from weird issues like some tabs simply refusing to load anything. I can refresh the tab, manually enter another address or a search term, or tap on a bookmark, but the tab stays blank. I have to close it and use a different tab, then.

Speaking of Chrome: Sometimes, it takes several seconds for Safari to display Google autocompletion results when entering a search in the address bar. Why? Chrome shows them instantly. edit: I was referring to Safari and Chrome on iOS.

They haven't fixed the graphics issue causing Safari to display black squares at times either. Here's an example (not my picture):

Notification Center, Today Widget: "The first item in your calendar today is .... and started over an hour ago." (Wording might be off, I translated it from German)

Gee, thanks. In fact, it started about five hours ago and ended about two hours ago. You're telling me this because..?

edit: Found another (minor) bug, I think. In Mavericks, when I received an email while the Mac was locked, the notification would just say "1 new email". Upon logging in, it would fade to the sender and subject. Now in Yosemite, it still says "1 new email" after unlocking the Mac..

I don't know it this was an intentional change (why?) or a bug, but it still happens.

Safari has been by far the best thing about Yosemite, I haven't had an issues with lag or slowdown and I'm on a 2010 13" MBP. I find Chrome to be basically unusable. No black issues either.

Today com.apple.photomoments is just having a field day. 70~90% CPU usage, going on for hours.

Should I restart the computer or can I just kill it? I can only imagine it's a rogue process at this point.
