A story that actually made me think and care about its characters?

How does it do that though in comparison to The Social Network. You can't bring up a point without at least providing some instances as to why.

I can bring up anything I want. This isn't a critical examination of movies thread, but one about Oscar nominations. One-off comments are fine.

I would say that a thread about film nominations warrants some kind of critical discussion... but if you don't want to, that is perfectly fine.

There's no way in hell Inception will get nominated for best picture.

There's no way in hell it wont. It's the token genre movie that we'll be seeing slip into the best picture category every year because of this 10 nomination bullshit. I wish it would go to something better (or you know, good) but there isn't really any others that the Oscars would dare recognise.

My picks for the big ones:

Best Picture: Inception
Best Director: Christopher Nolan
Best Actor: Michael Cera
Best Actress: Natalie Portman

Still a whole bunch of these films that I haven't seen since I've been traveling for a few months.

Well with a list like that you might want to catch up.

Although I don't disagree with you... accept with Michael Cera.

I'm hoping Ricky Gervais gets invited :p
I bet you that'll be one of the leading jokes by Anne Hathaway and James Franco.

Meanwhile, is this the first time that the host will end up being nominated?

Please explain the hate for the 10 nominations for best picture because I do not get it. Every year it seems a couple of the most critically acclaimed pictures do not get nominated, and every year a couple of snoozers get in there instead.

Eternal Sunshine, Punchdrunk Love, The Dark Knight, Boogie Nights, and a couple of others come to mind in recent years. Of course that is personal opinion, but I do not see how it hurts the process to have more choice in the matter. Without ten nominations I bet Inception and True Grit would not make it, and those were two of my top 4 of the year.

by the way, speaking of The kids are all right. I watched it last night because it was nominated at the golden globes (and I didn't know of it before). I seriously don't know what's so good about it, can someone explain it to me?

For Best Picture I go with:

The Social Network
The Fighter
The King's Speech
Inception
Black Swan
True Grit
The Town
127 Hours
Rabbit Hole
The The Kids Are All Right

Best Picture - The King's Speech
Best Director - David Fincher
Best Actor - Colin Firth
Best Actress - Natalie Portman
Best Supporting Actor - Christian Bale

The King's Speech is a competent Oscar bait this year, and I am 100% certain that it's going to sweep the Oscars. It reminds me of the episode of Extras with Kate Winslet.

After seeing Black Swan, I finally have a reason to watch the Oscars this year. Portman had better win.

What's the deal with 10 nominations. That's way too much.

The deal is to be able to include commercially successful films that wouldn't have otherwise been nominated, to try and ignite mainstream interest and higher ratings.

A worthwhile idea in my opinion.

I just saw The Social Network for the first time last week. Incredibly well-written, Sorkin has his Oscar locked down for sure. And although it's Christian Bale's trophy to lose I really hope Andrew Garfield grabs a nod for Supporting Actor for his role, he outclassed everyone else in that movie. I don't see it as a Best Picture winner though, can't put my finger on it. The direction was okay, nothing less than expected from David Fincher. But once it was over, I didn't feel wowed or anything. It was simply an entertaining story to me, nothing more.

Oh, I see.

Well, that makes sense.

Garfield was great but hasn't got a hope in hell of getting best supporting actor.

Bale has it locked with the very unlikely challenge coming from Rush.

In other words, it would fit in nicely with all the Best Picture winners of the last decade or more.

Apart from Portman this is some quality trolling. :p

Watched it for the third time this week at the cinema still love it. Great movie.

The Fighter
Black Swan
The Social Network
The Kings Speech

Any of those are worthy winners of best picture.

Apparently the Best Picture voting is done on an Alternative Voting system... the same as the Producers Guild Awards... which The King's Speech won.

My money is going with the PGA (they've got it right the past 3 years too). King's Speech will trump The Social Network.

Whether people here would agree, an animated film SHOULD win Best Picture, which is why I'm rooting for Toy Story 3 to win.

For best animated film I'd love to see How to Train Your Dragon win.

I haven't seen enough films this year to really make any predictions. I just hope, however unlikely it may be, that Never Let Me Go gets at least one nomination in any category, because it was incredible.

Otherwise the only film I saw that I'd rate for Oscar chances would be Black Swan, and that will probably only win for Portman (deservedly).

Yeah, I think the GG have only matched the Oscars once in the last 6 years.

I'm pulling for Scott Pilgrim in VFX.

Best Picture picks:
Kings Speech
Black Swan
The Fighter
Inception
True Grit
The Social Network - Winner
The Kids Are All Right
Toy Story 3
The Town
Winter's Bone

This preshow to the nominations is pretty awful though.

Jacki Weaver!! Yes! No Hailee??
EDIT: Did Inception actually just win for screenwriting?? I love the movie but are you fucking serious?

Chalk me up as one who didn't think The Social Network was that great. It was decent, but if it wins it'll be considered the Crash of this decade within a few years.

Black Swan or Inception or even True Grit (although the John Wayne original was superior) would be better choices.

Official List:

Black Swan
The Fighter
Inception
The Kids Are Alright
The King's Speech
127 Hours
The Social Network
Toy Story 3
True Grit
Winter's Bone

King's Speech with 12 nominations total. True Grit for 10. Social Network and Inception 8.

I was wrong with True Grit and especially 127 Hours. I thought 127 Hours was going to get left out because it didn't do that well at the box office and Franco is one of the hosts.

Black Swan, The Fighter, Inception, The Kids Are All Right, The King's Speech, 127 Hours, The Social Network, Toy Story 3, True Grit, Winter's Bone. I was 9/10.

When do other nominations come out?
