Watching this just reminds me what a great year it was. I don't know about you guys, but I keep hearing what a bad year it was.

Nolan should have been in best directory, not screenplay.
Surprised at The Illusionist.
Thought The Town would get in BP somewhere, but I'm sort of glad it didn't because I like every other movie in there better.
Hailee Steinfeld snubbed.

Other than that it's pretty much as expected.

I called it. Nolan snubbed for best director

Surprised?

Inception wasn't exactly brilliantly directed.

She got nominated.

Jacki Weaver!! Yes! No Hailee??
EDIT: Did Inception actually just win for screenwriting?? I love the movie but are you fucking serious?

Hailee's nominated for supporting. I'm happy to see Jackie up there too.

The rest of the nominees are not surprising, The Town getting only one is probably the only exception (I dont think it's worthy of anything, so that's fine by me).

What's with the animated film category, only 3 films this year? Where's Tangled? :(

? She got nominated for best supporting. Should she have been Best Actress?

The year Amy Adams and Michelle Wiliams get their Oscars will be a happy year for me. Although the former hasn't been in quite the right movies. Williams should've been nominated twice this year, the great Meek's Cutoff unfortunately not exactly typical Oscar bait.

The Academy get to choose which category to nominate/vote them towards, no matter which one (lead/supporting) the studio pushes them for.

Scott Pilgrim not up for VFX, but fucking Alice in Wonderland is.
I need to strangle something.

Yes. She was the center of the movie. Still good though. Snub was too strong a word.

...uh, Scott Pilgrim had nice graphics and all....but how can it possibly stand up to Alice in Wonderland's visuals? Have you seen that movie?

I love Amy Adams but she's not going to win.
Michelle Williams is also a long shot.

And I was pretty indifferent towards Meek's Cutoff. I want to see the director's previous film staring Williams, Wendy and Lucy.

John Dunbar

correct about everything
Love the best actress line-up, especially Kidman and Portman. But they should have kicked out Williams and put Julianne Moore in there.

Although Nolan should be up for a director nod, can't complain too much.

True Grit snub at GG's meant nothing.

Amy Adams is going to be like Glenn Close. Nominated bunches but never winning. She is currently my most consistently enjoyable actress and she's pretty versatile. Quite a ways from Cruel Intentions 2.

No I didn't mean they would win this year, but that they've both showed amazing, varied performances through their careers.

Wendy and Lucy is a masterpiece.

Nolan should have been nominated over Tom Hooper, no offense to the guy. But he didn't achieve half of what Nolan did, and the degree of difficulty wasn't even in the same ballpark.

It was always going to be either Benning or Moore, and not both, and it was always going to be Benning!

Hereafter got a Best Visual Effects nom over Tron Legacy?

Oh Oscars
Wow, I just noticed that. The fact that TRON isn't on that list is rather disturbing. Say what you will about the movie, the effects were fucking amazing. Oh, and I've got Hans Zimmer for best score. It's my favorite category every year (I fucking love movie scores). I haven't heard a single movie song this year better than "Time".

I hope the Illusionist wins best Animation an absolutely brilliant movie.
They might as well just hand it over Toy Story 3 now. It'd be good if one year, two of the best animated film nominees were nominated for best picture as well, it would make that category interesting again.

John Powell is nominated for best score for How to Train Your Dragon. Awesome.

Yep. In my mind, VFX aren't about making everything look wacky. They're about adding a huge amount of detail to the image.

Alice in Wonderland had special effects in quantity, but not really quality.

Glad to see How to Train Your Dragon get a nomination for Original Score. I wish Daft Punk got a nomination for their work on Tron Legacy though. That was the score of the year for me by far.

It's a shame so many of the categories are a done deal already.

In fact, I'd say the most up-in-the-air category right now is ironically Best Picture.

I would have liked to see James Newton Howard nominated for The Last Airbender's score, but I guess it would have been best for the Oscars to not appear like they were complementing the film in any way.

I disagree. When the Red Queen was interviewing the tiny frog that was lying to her, it almost made my jaw drop.

Nolan got nominated in original screenplay too. Not bad for the worst screenplay writer of all-time.

Nolan is trending on twitter!

I'm guessing this is not the reason why he wanted to trend...if he wanted to trend.

CG stuff is bullshit. Tron or Scott Pilgrim (Pilgrim should have also gotten something for editing) are leagues better than Hereafter and Alice in Wonderland. I'd take Splice and Shutter Island over them too Not only technically but as important aspects of the films.

Little disappointed that Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work wasn't nominated for doc.

I will agree about the frog. Great animation.

Really? As someone who's most fascinated by a films direction, I'd disagree rather strongly. Inception's screenplay and direction were incredibly well done.

EDIT: grammar police.

I think you are wanted back at the troll lair.

As much as I love Inception The King's Speech is a fantastic film and the one I'll root for. Especially for best actor. Colin Firth absolutely deserves that Oscar, brilliant performance.

I have to say though, I am not a big fan of Winter's Bone. After all the critics falling in love with it I thought it was a bit disappointing.
