Manuel Valls may be supporting Macron instead of Hamon now.

I honestly don't know how effective that kind of public support would be anyway.
Meanwhile, Valls would keep eroding his party.

I would definitely prefer to have Macron in the run off, but I don't believe this is productive. That I dislike Valls probably clouds my judgment, though.

Well, Fillon's been indicted, so I'm certain he will do as he promised and end his run.

He already said he won't.

What a clown. Literally caught lying to your voters, that's good.

Actually he's right, that's quite the change, he lied BEFORE the election. Not after :p .

As for Valls, you know what, all those shitty PS people are doing Hamon a favor by leaving. At least whatever is left of the PS after this will be a new kind of left and not whatever Hollande and Valls turned it into.

So, that's what? Four counts? "détournement de fonds publics", "complicité et recel de détournement de fonds publics", "complicité et recel d'abus de biens sociaux", "manquements aux obligations de déclarations à la haute autorité de la vie publique"

Not bad.

AFP: #BREAKING French probe opened into 2016 Vegas trip by Macron: judicial source

Maaaaaan, this election.

Not really new, I remember reading about it last week or before. *e - well apparently they just went one step further into the investigations.
Macron shouldn't be bothered by that, he's not the one at fault but the company who organized an event without doing an "appel d'offres". They admitted they were wrong, IIRC.

So now, Macron, Fillon and LePen are all under investigation? What the fuck
The investigation over Macron is not really something that should be important, it was a mistake made by a company when he was part of the government. French law stipulates that for state budgets over I don't know how much money you have to legally create a call for bids to be sure there is no rigged contracts. For an event in Vegas, one company was called to organize the thing without the use of a preliminary call for bids. Macron was there. He isn't even mentioned in this part of the investigation. It's more frenchpress trying to make some noise.

To summarize Macron was just there as an official, the company organizing the thing is under investigation. That's the whole thing.

Le Pen and Fillon on the other hand are more in danger as they are personally involved. Hence their "don't trust the judges" stance.

Well that's a relief. Hopefully it doesn't stick to him then.

There's a lot of sensationalist headlines these days about every mistakes the three major candidates made in the past, half of it is the same thing everyone is talking about for the past month, the other half is stupid things that shouldn't even be a topic in a newspaper. But the terms "justice" or "investigation" are the most selling news for the moment after the canard enchaîné revelations. So I guess we'll have a lot more of "breaking: Fillon had 10€ on a personal account" and "Le Pen: I hate judges" things during the next weeks.

I don't think Macron will let something like that slip away. He's younger, he doesn't have as much to hide :p

As said above the Macron thing doesn't concern him personally. But even so it's just a "preliminary investigation" for now.

Fillon on the other hand is under "indictment", which is a step above as there is an official, formal accusation in place.

Le Pen was not indicted yet but is expected to be in the near future (like Fillon before today).

For the record, learning that Fillon's children gave him back a big chunk of the public money they earned is, in no way, a trivial information.

That's actually a pretty big deal :/ ...

It seems stupid not to give his "parrainage" to Hamon, it's not like it means a lot. He could do it to show that he accepts the results of the primaries, and then not support him actively during the campaign. Something similar to what Juppé does for Fillon.

Exactly. This helps no one.
Juppé handled his delicate position really well by not fracturing his party further while being pretty clear about his complete lack of love for Fillon and his supporters.

Just read that story about that kid who got beat at the end of a Fillon meeting because he didn't want to sing the national anthem. These people are something else.

I'm not even touching the Grasse story, but there's a lot of very thick irony there.

Oof. Ifop has Fillon down to 18%. Hammon at 13.5%. Macron only .5% behind Le Pen...
This morning, people were discussing polls on the radio and pointed out that the fact all these polls are made online is pretty problematic.

You mean via email or otherwise? I assume the targets of the polls skew younger then? They could be overweighting Macron or underweighting Fillon significantly.

For the gaffers who actually live in France, how do the young people see him? Does he have anywhere near the magnetism of Bernie?

The polls may be overestimaring macron a bit right now but I highly doubt it's by enough to make it even possible for fillon to get second in the first round.

Eh, not really. Online polling has gotten significantly better recently.

The polls could be wrong, but not because they're online-based.

It's official : there'll be eleven candidates in the first round of the election.

The candidates :

- François Fillon
- Benoît Hamon
- Emmanuel Macron
- Nicolas Dupont-Aignan
- Jean-Luc Mélenchon
- Nathalie Arthaud
- Marine Le Pen
- François Asselineau
- Philippe Poutou
- Jean Lassalle
- Jacques Cheminade

The big five, according to the opinion polls, remain Fillon, Le Pen, Macron, Mélenchon and Hamon.

They'll have a debate monday night.

When the official campaign starts, on April 10th if I remember correctly, all candidates will have the same speaking time in the media.

He's quite popular among the youth, but it's probably because he's the youngest potential president we've ever had. But the young aren't following the details of politics closely, and vote either for contestation or for the most charismatic candidate.
As a matter of fact Macron is tied in popularity with... Marine le Pen. :/ Third is Melenchon, then Hamon, and Fillon is dead last.

Got an email from Fillon addressed to French citizens registered as living abroad. He's hoping we haven't kept up with the news in France? Lol

That said, I do agree with one point of his email. Getting rid of online voting is a step backwards. Oh well.

Big news is, there's another centrist candidate : Jean Lassalle

... well, he's pro-Assad and hangs out with famous conspiracy crackpots, but hey, plus on est de fous, amirite

Macron is doing better than I expected. He had a good comeback against Le Pen about not dividing the population.

I was thinking the same thing. Between his high turnout in Paris on Saturday and this debate... could he actually have a chance?

Probably not. His numbers have been literally flat for a while now, while everyone else besides MLP has seen some movement. It's shockingly consistent.
