Before she had a ton of DPS and really high armour so she could survive after diving so long that she would get her jet cooldown back to retreat.
After the nerf to her armor and damage she's no longer a killing machine, but they put more of a focus on her defense matrix so she can nullify tons of incoming damage, eat enemy ultimates, while still being able to dive on squishies when needed

I know D.Va is pretty versatile, but seems instalocking ~any singular character 99.9% of the time can run contrary to having a balanced / strategic team comp.
That's almost never the case from my experience, at least with D.Va. The only major exception is when the rest of the team refuses to play a healer.
Well they instalocked their main. It's not their fault the rest of the team refuses to play healer either
D.Va is pretty good these days, lucky for cuilan. She is good in dive, triple tank, triple support etc.

And then they look at your stats and insist you play Lucio. It's a vicious cycle.
I actually made an alt account and started using it exclusively, just because of this shit. Under an hour on Lucio in over 200 hours played since.

Mercy is the only healer, I loathe to play (I got gold for her for some reason).
Luico is fun. You can play aggressively and just be a pain in the ass.
Zen is fun because you can push a lot of DPS.
Ana is fun because she has a lot skills to juggle.
Mercy is just boring as fuck.

I think you should probably instalock your main every single game. Just be open to switch if needed.

I honestly have no idea why there are so many Mercy mains out there. Like I guess they get value out of baby sitting and rezzing without actually contributing any skill to the fight? I don't know. Not to insult Mercy mains but it's boring as hell.
I'd pick Zen anytime over Mercy. I just get constantly "WE NEED A HEALER" spammed because I'm constantly the one that has to heal and they want her as the solo healer. It's fucking stupid.
I was watching a stream archive for IDD-something and he was doing 1v1 and the other guy kept telling him he was hacking and being salty as fuck. He checked that guy's stats and he was a Mercy main. IDD got so annoyed with that guy that he ended up messing with him and destroying him. It was pretty hilarious.

Except that I do play healer if no one else does, though such situations are extremely rare.
This guy knows what's up. Though D.Va was always pretty good imho.
out of all the heroes to instalock D.va is the best since she is so vital to team comps now. Not sure how people get bored since every match is different and she is fun

Nah, Dva was pretty garbo early on before Defense Matrix was reworked from a single-use, set-period action with a long cooldown to the resource-based, variable-length option with effectively no CD it is now.
And her ult had a longer detonation wait time (almost inconceivable now when everybody seems to have enough time to escape) and killed Dva herself if she was in the blast radius.
She's gotten allot better since launch.
She has an entirely different skillset from other heroes. Kinda like Genji, but with Genji you still need to know how to aim. Mercy's challenge comes from positioning, gamesense, and timing, meaning players with less mechanical skill can still do well and climb the SR ladder. Pretty easy to see the appeal in a hero that pays dividends without having years of shooter experience.
She's better now yeah, but she was still very good at launch. So good that I was able to do this with her before she got any buffs:

If I'm Zen, I spam "I need Healing" right back at them, as in, "Choose a second healer then!" Strangely, no one ever does. But they do shut up about it.

right. so people got mad that she went from mediocre hero to overpowered hero and then had to go back to a still pretty good hero with an ability that shuts down at least half the games ultimates?

That attitude seems so limiting though. Not only to your team (thankfully D.Va is versatile enough that she is never an outright super bad pick) but mostly to yourself. D.Va is awesome i agree but you were never curious if one of the other 20 characters could be even better? I can understand preference but you have literally 0 time played on pretty much the entire cast. What if Zarya is your one true love (and imagine this, you could then juggle your playtime between more than one character, going between Zarya or whoever AND D.Va! *mindblown*) or Mei or Mccree? The only thing never playing them does for sure is that you will never actually know. Like, someone that is even better than D.Va could have been right in front of your eyes in the hero selection screen all along but you never actually looked at the poor character ;_;
If you have another account in which you have at least tried some other chars then its not that bad i guess. You also seem to not be as bad as the one tricks who actually leave/throw games when their pick is "stolen". Shit like that hanzo main IronAids who just legitimately throws every match when that happens so that their comp season stats stay at a clean 100% pick rate. Most dumb mentality ever.

This sucks. Roadhog was the reason I bought the game. Guess it's time to find a new tank. Winston maybe.
Just another day in comp. I'm actually shocked when a duo/trio pick a decent comp.
But I do have a secondary pick, which is Sombra. I also enjoy using Lucio, Orisa, and Ana. I just don't find them quite as fun as D.Va
I've also used all the characters in Arcade mode, but those stats aren't tracked.
And I don't have an alt account. I don't engage in childish behavior like smurfing, throwing/quitting, or complaining about team comp.
Well, it's not like Mercy is prohibited from shooting or aiming. In certain situations, pulling out the gun helps a lot more than trying to heal people or damage boosting. Knowing when to shoot and when to heal makes her a lot more fun than just trying to be a mindless heal bot. Her free gun reload helps you juggle shooting and healing anyway.

I regularly pull out her gun and get a decent number of kills per match on top of healing.
Someone calls out an enemy's low and trying to run for cover? I pull out the gun and try to help finish him off, and sometimes landing those last hits makes the difference in a team fight. Someone landed Earthshatter or a sleep, but not a lot of people are nearby to follow up? I pull out the gun. An ulting Pharah or Reaper? I won't outheal that, so I pull out the gun to help shut down the ult asap, and probably res to follow up.

Going from highest DPS to lowest DPS is quite the change. Play Reaper instead.

Horizon has a lot of high ground opportunities, the short walk from A to B and the high ground at B makes it probably the best 2CP map for me. Spawns still suck last point tho.
For point A the offense will probably want to go right to contest the high ground. I can see the anti-grav section being pretty useful here.

People comparing it to D.Va, D.Va had ALREADY been a weak hero, then she got buffed and was solid, then she got buffed AGAIN for no apparent reason and was overpowered, so she was nerfed. People had already based their D.Va play around how she was before, she was simply overpowered and way too difficult to kill for a brief time. It's not the same situation.
If you're going to learn a dps almost everyone is more optimal than reaper which is why I'd advise against it even if he is similar to got (in that close range means free kills).
But since you want to learn tank pretty much go with anyone but orisa for much of the deal reasons as above. Rein, zar, winston, and diva all are worth learning.

Does Mercy res last the entire time they are in spawn, never noticed. If so, that's part of the problem with res. On 2CP it makes it so easy for Mercy to run back from spawn and res, coupled with the short walks and the defense spawn times if the offense is capping. Mercy res should only last the standard spawn time.
