Was grouped with a few friends and gaffers for some ranked mode last night.

Started out really well, a few of us were 4-1 and 6-1.

Then somebody left upon match start and we all got a loss.

Next match, one of our players decides to be Hanzo on offense (and defense), out of nowhere, of course we lost because we needed tanks or something solid.

After that match, said player doesnt play Hanzo again, but doesnt matter, 5 more losses are added before the end of the night. It seemed that the vibe shifted, since this guy just decided to do whatever he wanted, our team lost the confidence to win.

However, even with the self-sabotaging bad picks, our group encountered some downright monsters during placement. Snipers with godlike movement and headshot skills, and all other sorts of ruthless beasts. I fear even on my best day, besting these groups without a mic/practice was going to be near impossible.

Case in point, Zarya/Pharah timed ults, simple combo right? But enough to take a well-defended point if you try a couple times. All it takes is two people with mics and some coordination, pretty much MOBA style and it worked.

Nobody was even playing poorly, but the other teams (5 or 6 queued most likely) were very coordinated, and had solid picks. I found myself counter-picking as a Junkrat main because half of my shots would hit a Rein/Zarya shield, and it would take so much luck to actually kill a Mercy/Lucio. Playing Reaper got us a couple of close wins but I am not good enough with him to carry teams.

I think the effect of selfless hero picking can not be understated.

It's also annoying when players say "fuck you" to their team and decide to play Hanzo on offense when we really don't need it. If I wanted to be sabotaged from within my own team, I'd just queue solo.

Now at 4-5 and one win away from seeing my destiny.

I know during placements, as a full group, I encountered some organized and skilled players. If I'd queued with 2 or 3, I know we would have had a better chance, but I have no regrets. Definitely seems smarter to play with a smaller group unless you and 5 other people are all on mics and all comfortable playing your roles in the competitive meta.

Its fun, but people in general definitely need to stop acting like idiots when they win/lose. Don't gloat or trash your team, I really can't stand when players do that.

Good thing competitive is out. Maybe quick play will be more chill now? I kinda burned out on this game at the moment so if I do get on I'm just going to be screwing around in quick play. Any early impressions on how qp has been since comp mode has released? Is anyone even playing qp right now?

That's what I'm hoping for when it hits consoles next week. Maybe I'll be able to get some trophies done with the scrubs.

I played Reaper for the first time in competitive mode last night, not advisable to pick up a new hero under those conditions, but justifiable for the comp.

It actually went very well, he's an excellent pick. Great damage, excellent survivability, and powerful ultimate.

Played a few games people were pretty chill. I usually don't see an excess of finger pointing on PC though. When people complain on PC it always seems to be them raging at the general situation and not a particular person. It's when finger pointing happens that things get bad.

Maybe more chill but you are also more likely to end up filling in games with 10 seconds left on the timer. If you ask for chill games are you prepared to accept he the chill mindset?

If there's one tip I wish I could have displayed on loading screens, is this:

"Screaming over your mic "get on the point" is not tactical advice. It's a distraction, and actually makes your team worse. If you need to say something over mic, have it be counterpick suggestions, calling out roamers or up high strikers, focus-fire, etc."

Getting real tired of people in Competitive thinking that just because they scream at their team to do the obvious thing, it's going to magically happen. I know people get frustrated, especially in Comp where Rank Matters, but if someone is serious enough to play Comp, they need to be serious enough to know microphone etiquette.

win 4 games, move about 40% of a level, lose 1 game and lose a whole level. Yep seems good this.

Hours of progress, losst in one game, who the fuck said this is okay. Fuckin is a blizzard game after all.

edit: also lol, yes me and zemm are grouped.

Just means your mmr is significantly lower than your rank. It'll normalize with games. It's not like they gonna require an 80% win rate to climb

Hanzo isn't even a bad character. Most people just have no idea what they're doing with him. Too passive, don't exploit Scattershot enough, pick him when it makes no sense to pick him, et cetera.

I've also seen some weird stuff in ranked. I saw the first point on King's Row capture itself when there were 3 defenders and 0 attackers on it, and we lost the final point on Gibraltar while I was literally standing on the cart.

Yea, he's pretty powerful if you play aggressively with him. I usually play very aggressive with him and even get into the middle of fights and can still last quite a while with him getting kills.

Yes? Matches are at most what 15mins long? If people leave I don't care. This isn't Dota where I'm losing an hour if people bail.

I've played with some great Meis though. It's rare, but when it works, it's VERY funny. They know exactly when to shut stuff down with ice wall, allowing the team to reposition and prepare for the exact enemy combination. They also act as great trolling maneuvers to annoy and confuse the enemy team, sometimes splitting them up just enough so an otherwise strong combination can be picked off one by one.

Did my 10 matches (it went LWWWWLLWLL) and got Rank 50.

Comp is really fun and feels a step up in intensity from Quick Play. The worst parts of the community come out of the wood work tho.

The most positive reaction I've ever gotten was at the start of a round of defense on Volskaya we had a team of

Mei
Torb
Torb
Symmetra
Widowmaker
Reinhart

The Reinhart was the last to pick, after he did, I said over the Mic he might want to think about switching because hardly anyone on our team would be taking advantage of his shield.

He proceeded to give an "understood" then turn around and switch to D.Va.

Is that a new thing that people do? I've had double reapers in 3 of my placement matches so far. Surprise surprise we lost all 3 of those.

What's wrong with double reaper

You don't need it but what's wrong with it

Hero stacking in general is a bad strat, you gain very little and end up weakening your overall team comp.

Played some KotH matches against the dual Reaper comp that literally felt like impossible games. You can easily counter one Reaper, but countering two who actually work together and stagger their cooldowns is extremely difficult.

Mei really feels like the type of hero that is really great with a coordinated group but is kind of terrible in pubs. I haven't had a chance to try out the competitive mode yet, so I dunno if its better there than in the normal quick match, but I have also had my share of Mei's who are clearly detrimental to the team.

I mean, there are worse characters to have doubles of on a team than Reaper. It just sounds like you had double bad players, which probably wouldn't have been any better if they had picked other heroes.

Pubs just wanna pull off the POTG Go Fuck Yourself Ultimate that is all

Pubs just keep shooting arrows within vicinity of enemies, the hit box is huge enough to trigger
Good Hanzos at least make their shot count

Have you ever run up on a pub Hanzo, they get so scared an just jump up and down and just pressing their trigger as quickly as possible
Looks like the bow is shooting limp arrows, yet if it connects does the same amount of damage as a full held arrow and has the same radius

The day the nerf Hanzo, this game loses a lot of the players who instapick him, most think they have the skill not realizing the gracious hitbox those arrows allow

I've been thinking, and I think I'd like a map with more verticality in regards to objectives. Like a Capture map where the attacking team starts on the ground floor and the two capture points are both above them. Or a KOTH where both teams start on the bottom and the point is on a roof/helipad and everyone has to go up to get to it. It would add a different dimension to attacking/defending. Hell, maybe they could pull off a payload run where a section of the level is escorting the payload as it goes up an elevator of sorts.

Maybe it's not feasible balance-wise, but it sounds neat in my head.

Oh I think most Meis are detrimental to the team, even when I try playing as her, but that has to do with a specialized character and players not being familiar with the best way to use that character. If we want to talk about characters who people love to pick, but suck at using, and hurts the team, let's talk about GENJIS. :p

His arrows definitely do less damaged when uncharged.

Hey Kor when do you usually play? Weeknights?

I play with a few of DestinyGAF so when Ranked comes next week if you want we can group up unless you have a group. We play mostly on the weekends though.

Just means your mmr is significantly lower than your rank. It'll normalize with games. It's not like they gonna require an 80% win rate to climb

Hidden MMR has nothing to do with competitive matchmaking. The reason you gain/lose more in different situations is based on average group sizes / individual play/average rank.

For example if your team has a group of 3, and the enemy team has no group. Your team wont gain much for a win and the enemy team will gain alot for a win. But your team will lose alot for a loss and the enemy team wont lose alot.

edit: Man i wish people wouldnt just say random statements as if they are fact.

when seagull's friend wants to see if he can join their party but he has a 6party team already and then friend and party queue up and ends up Matching against them lol

(watching twitch stream at work)

Hanzo arrow damage is 28-125. Two headshots at zero charge is 112 damage considering the size on arrows hit boxes it's not too crazy imagining that happening.

Yeah the weapon demonstration video specifically shows it doing less damage when it's not charged up, and those are in game.

I don't think anyones actually watched those though

BTW If your competitive stats aren't showing up on overbuff add "?mode=competitive" to the end of your url then hit the refresh icon. Everything should be pegged 99% percentile because it's still comparing your numbers against quickplay data set but at least you can see your w/l and general stats.

So, placement matches, got 6W4L. Got into some wack teams, got into some really good team, had fun matches, better than I expected. All randoms.

And at the end of the placement I leveled up, and got the huntress skin for widow, so pretty alright day overall.

Sometimes I would love to see ultimates gone. I had several games were we were crushing it just to opponents hanging out on the game stacking edgy teen ultimates "die, die, die", "justice rains from above", and such, it seems to take part of the skill away. Ofc you still win most of the time if you are better, but ultimates can drag down games unfairly without much skill needed.

Lol we had a couple teams pick Mei last night, they got washed in record time.

I mainly play Zarya, so Mei is easy to counter/dominate when on the opposing team and does not slot in well when she's on my team (need more ranged DPS to compensate for Zarya's close range nature). So my opinions are biased.

Just beat a 2 Torb on Hollywood

Smart Tracer (Me), Genji, Hanzo wrecked their setup

Just need smart players, no communication necessary

We made those 2 Torbs life a living hell
I kept flanking and pissing them off by making them chase me all the way by the saloon area

They left their turrets alone, Genji and Hanzo destroyed, they start their molten cores late on me
I survive for a few, by the time they come back, my team ready for them

Will the golden guns still be available after the season end, or would I need to get the 300 points within the season to get them? I'm a little confused about how that works.
