Was grouped with a few friends and gaffers for some ranked mode last night.
Started out really well, a few of us were 4-1 and 6-1.
Then somebody left upon match start and we all got a loss.
Next match, one of our players decides to be Hanzo on offense (and defense), out of nowhere, of course we lost because we needed tanks or something solid.
After that match, said player doesnt play Hanzo again, but doesnt matter, 5 more losses are added before the end of the night. It seemed that the vibe shifted, since this guy just decided to do whatever he wanted, our team lost the confidence to win.
However, even with the self-sabotaging bad picks, our group encountered some downright monsters during placement. Snipers with godlike movement and headshot skills, and all other sorts of ruthless beasts. I fear even on my best day, besting these groups without a mic/practice was going to be near impossible.
Case in point, Zarya/Pharah timed ults, simple combo right? But enough to take a well-defended point if you try a couple times. All it takes is two people with mics and some coordination, pretty much MOBA style and it worked.
Nobody was even playing poorly, but the other teams (5 or 6 queued most likely) were very coordinated, and had solid picks. I found myself counter-picking as a Junkrat main because half of my shots would hit a Rein/Zarya shield, and it would take so much luck to actually kill a Mercy/Lucio. Playing Reaper got us a couple of close wins but I am not good enough with him to carry teams.
I think the effect of selfless hero picking can not be understated.
It's also annoying when players say "fuck you" to their team and decide to play Hanzo on offense when we really don't need it. If I wanted to be sabotaged from within my own team, I'd just queue solo.
Now at 4-5 and one win away from seeing my destiny.
I know during placements, as a full group, I encountered some organized and skilled players. If I'd queued with 2 or 3, I know we would have had a better chance, but I have no regrets. Definitely seems smarter to play with a smaller group unless you and 5 other people are all on mics and all comfortable playing your roles in the competitive meta.
Its fun, but people in general definitely need to stop acting like idiots when they win/lose. Don't gloat or trash your team, I really can't stand when players do that.
