OXM Lionhead Interview Fable: Legends "one of the most beautiful games on Xbox One"

If the presentation, story, and gameplay are solid... all will be forgiven in my case. The Fable games were pretty tired by Fable 3, so a new take is fine with me. I'm most worried about gameplay depth and customization in general. If there are a lot of different abilities, armor sets, and weapon types, I could be very happy with this game.

Fable 3 certainly wasn't great, but I feel there's lots if potential left in a traditional Fable title.

I'll check the beta out for this, but I haven't liked a single thing about what they've shown apart from the visuals.

The gameplay reminds me too much of Heroes and I hated that game with a passion.

I have a horrible feeling that is the singleplayer too, just with AI squadmates instead of other players.

Doubt it. The other players were screwing around with their powers when no enemies were around, and at some point I could hear an employee telling a nearby gamer what to expect when the door opened.

I'll have to agree.

Nah, they were showing the MP. I think it was a poor showing though. They can really sell this as a D&D-esque game if they get the presentation right, i.e. show people what's fun about being the villain, which effectively makes you the equivalent of the dungeon master, and what's fun about playing as a group instead of going on your solo adventure.

The biggest draw in Fable for me has always been the world of Albion. I love the art direction, the storytelling and world building that has gone into the creation of the franchise. I think Fable Legends should first draw people to the SP and then MP, and not vice-versa, because the Fable crowd (yes, one still exists!) never was big on MP to begin with, though co-op is obviously an enticing idea that has a lot of potential.

As a whole, I think Fable as a franchise is in the DNA of Xbox. I don't want to see it go away any time soon. I want a Fable 4, and 5 and 6, and so on. I want Albion to grow, I want to see a new age of Heroes, and I would love to see more of Aurora and explore the mythos of the Old Kingdom. Fable's potential is virtually limitless, it just needs people that will prioritise story and lore and gameplay over anything else for that to happen, and I think Lionhead has it in them, they just haven't shown it to us yet.

The game is drop dead gorgeous, but I really don't like the direction in which they're taking the Fable franchise. I honestly hope that this is going to end up being a spin-off, just an episode that we'll all look back on in slight embarrassment.

They really should have let it die with Molyneux's departure. Let Lionhead work on something original.

Why not both? The mainline Fable series was pretty damn good.

Games as service title with multiple seasons planned. Doubt it'll be be thought of as a spinoff unless the beta is a bomb and they just cancel it or something.

From the OP
Lionhead's online co-op spin-off Fable Legends will have a "huge presence at E3". So sayeth John Needham, studio head and boss of Microsoft's European publishing team, who also reckons it's "one of the most beautiful games on the platform right now."

I'd definitely say it's a spin off; it seems to have nothing in common with the mainline series and it's not a numbered title.

I have no problem with it running alongside the main series. I mean, I'm sure I could extract some fun out of this, maybe a lot, but this is not what I want from Fable. Microsoft needs more RPGs and action adventures, not less.

OXM called it a spinoff but I don't think Lionhead sees it that way.

"This is the next big Fable game that is going to be out for five to ten years so it needs to be big, it needs to be interesting," Needham told GamesIndustry.biz in an interview. "There needs to be a lot of stuff to do, it needs to integrate all the cloud and Xbox One features so we keep our community alive and growing. So yeah, it's big and ambitious, but it needs to be because it's going to be around a long time."

I don't think Fable 4 is being planned right now.

Just in the game defence, fable never really had any deep combat. I think the idea here is more of teamwork than individual characters. And they were planning on doing this almost like a MMO, where you get updates, extra content and all that.

Looks pretty but yea, it's still a fable game in terms of gameplay.

Fable 1 had a semblance of depth, especially in the Lost Chapters.
It was just dumb down for the 2nd game & further removed in the 3rd.

Thanks. I'll watch if in the morning. Any interesting bullet points/bits of info you can share right now?

He did mention agro as a mechanic which leads me to believe there will be some deeper strategy to the gameplay. Needham also said there is no set release date and that the game will be done when it's great. 300 years of Fable experience is on the development team and all the traditional Fable things will be present. Templates for the villain can be uploaded to the cloud and those templates may be used in single player mode for the enemy AI. There will be a heavy focus on teamwork and the classes seem varied. All characters can be customized with different armor sets, hair styles and make-up etc... 15-16 episodes in the game at launch each at about 30 min. of gameplay. It's been in development for 2 years as well.

Thanks. I guess that doesn't sound too bad, still not sold on the concept though and would much rather have a traditional Fable title.

Will watch the video when I get a chance.

Am I in the minority of saying that I think the animations are pretty terrible?

Characters come to a dead stop after running, looks like there's little-to-no animation smoothing except for maybe in combat.

This game is still probably over a year away, plenty of time to fix that kind of stuff.

Who cares what its called? It looks awesome and I have no doubt it'll sell well.
Plenty of people. Brand names come with built-in expectations on all sides, and they're cultivated for a reason.

In fact, for any poster out there who posts "who cares?" in a thread, you've already answered your own question before you've even hit that "submit reply" button.

I'm actually one of the few who like the usage of the Fable license.

It takes a familiar setting and aesthetic and sets up it's own rules and I think that's great. I liken it to EU stories in Star Wars that use the universe as a base to tell other stories with new characters.

While there are a few things I'm hesitant on such as the framing of the story and how the game plays without the opposing villain player (as well as as solo) I'm more positive about it's outlook as a Fable game and a fun multiplayer romp.
