Patrick Klepek Joining Giant Bomb as News Editor

So.....

1) Will he work from the office?

2) Will he do actual investigative journalism or simply take over for Brad Nicholson in his duties of re-writing news posted elsewhere?

Also, I'm excited. He seems to be well liked and it's nice to see Giant Bomb in a position to expand.

Klepek should totally be on the Bombcast. He was fantastic on Feedback, great sense of when to joke and when to get down to brass tacks.

1. Working from the WM offices yes :)
2. Both because as a 1 man team you can't do everything so I assume they still report on stuff others have reported earlier.
But I assume the site front page will not be a "giant" kotaku, I think they are a lot smarter than that.
About the same amount maybe a little more, but better quality.

I'm not opposed to him being the first alternate for the Bombcast should someone be off on assignment. It's nice to mix up the formula sometimes, as that often leads to the funniest conversations.

First alternate should always be Dave Snider.

I don't like Patrick as a personality, but I respect him as a news person, so I hope for the best.

However, I have a terrible, TERRIBLE feeling this means Vinny is going to be replaced on the Bombcast so he can focus more on all the video content of Whiskey Media. And since Vinny is one of my favorite personalities in games—and Patrick one of my least—this makes me a scaaaaaared panda.

You're scaring me :(

I was not a big fan of his originally, but he has grown on me a lot. He seems to take the investigative reporter approach to the industry, and not the "hey they just sent us a demo lets play it and talk about it" approach that most of the industry has. He has grown up a lot, has a great track record of exclusives, and fits a certain hole that Giant Bomb has right now. I think he will help make a great site better.

That is amazing news, now I have somewhere to go besides GAF for news.

Also Patrick's twitter updates and Jeff on the Bombcast last week totally should have tipped us off.

Of course, someone should also bring up the fact that he called Nintendo 64 "old Nintendo".

Ah, Player One Podcast... good times.

The majority of the GB community (along with the entire online video game community) consider the N64 "old Nintendo". I'm looking forward to having someone I can relate to in that regard at GB to counteract Jeff and Ryan's old man ways.

PLEASE don't be on the bombcast.

No offence but he made 1up yours dreadful while he was there. I might actually stop listening to the bombcast altogether if he becomes a regular.

Yeah, I realize in the game industry you're dead when you turn 30. :lol

It's going to piss me off when people consider the Nintendo Wii the iconic Nintendo console though.

Five is one too many for a podcast. Also, I'm sure they're not going to bump off any of the main four.

Now Jeff has one more person he can unwittingly lure onto the Train.

I hope you're right.

I'm way more worried about this than I should be lol.

Congrats on both Patrick and Giant Bomb!

I am surprised about all the reservations about having Patrick on the podcast, but I guess when I think about it, the current team is a good balanced match right now and the Giant Bombcast is definitely one of the more laid-back podcasts currently out there in terms of signal to noise ratio. And while I always like more signal, I can definitely respect that many listeners also really appreciate the noise (personally I always wish for an autoskip function in my podcast player that skips ahead each time food or drink are discussed, but thankfully that hasn't been so bad lately and I know its a personal thing). That said, I think if you give him time to adjust to the rhythm, he should be fine. For now, perhaps he can fill in on those many occasions where half the crew is on tour, and/or just drop in for a news section.

As for the news, yeah, much more so than its podcast, Giant Bomb has so far been extremely laid-back in terms of content, imho, and there is no question that most of its value comes from the video. So personally I would expect Patrick's role to be to bring news and background features mostly in that form as well. If he would do daily or at least regular summaries of the news that actually matters with some half-decent journalistic backgrounding in a proper TV news style affair with a whiff of whimsy but serious reporting when appropriate, I would become a very faithful and grateful viewer (an audio only feed would be cool as well, as I always have more time to listen than to watch, hence my consumption of just about every gaming podcast that matters). As it is now, I rarely come to the giant bomb website - only for rare cases when there is a quick-look I am interested in, and then to post complaints if I'm really upset about them (like for The Fight: Lights Out :p ), partly just because the content is otherwise really thin and the site has so far been next to useless when it comes to news.

So this could be great - wish you all the best everyone, and Patrick, I pretty much got my current job the same way: I wanted a job close to my now wife and mother of my children and this was pretty much the first job since I started working that I applied for after just picking out the most suitable company in that area.

What if Brad moves to Korea to be GB's official Starcraft correspondent?

They would need to replace him with somebody that also has banana breath.

How would we feel if Klepek came on the Bombcast just to read the news?

Sweet. If they're going to bother with this 'video games news' thing at all, they may as well use the best, so I'm happy about this.

Rather than Patrick being on the Bombcast, I'd much prefer a weekly show where Patrick and a couple of the other GB guys look more in-depth into the news.

I thought Patrick did a great job when he was doing news on 1up Yours back in 2007, so if anything I'd like to see an addition to the podcast. The news section as it is is cursory at best, and some in-depth discussion would be kinda cool.
Yeah would be cool to bring him in on the news section of the podcast. That would give it some kind of 1Up Yours vibe with the dedicated news guy being there.

I'm okay with him being a pinch hitter or alternative contributor on the podcast, but please, please don't be a permanent fixture. The balance and the flow of show is absolutely perfect as it is, there's a very solid rapport amongst the guys forged overs years and years of doing podcasts together, they know how to dance, they got this shit on lock down.

Sad to say, but his 'news' segments on 1up Yours really did that podcast no favors, I wouldn't say it brought them to a screeching halt, but it always felt largely unnecessary and distracting. Wish him the best at GB, but don't upset the apple cart with crow barring additional hosts in.

Fucking awesome. Patrick is one of the most under-appreciated writers in the business, and he really really deserves as much spotlight as he possibly could get.

Grats to Luke Smith 2.0, go kick some ass at Giantbomb.

That is seriously damn cool. Patrick is one of, if not the best news reporters in the industry. Just what Giant Bomb needs. Totally awesome. :O

Klepek is one of the few game journalists in the industry that actually finds and breaks new stories. He'll be a great addition to the site.

Looking forward to seeing what he digs up.

Great news. Klepek seems like good people and GB is in dire news of producing more quality written content.
Who the hell goes to Giant Bomb to read(sp?) stuff? Do most people who visit Giant Bomb even know how to read? I sure as hell don't!

This is sort of unrelated but looking back Luke Smith was a total dicklord. Almost all of his analysis and comments in news and podcasts ended up being completely wrong.

I still adore him, and his interview methods were amazing. He asked the right questions and made som amazing coverage in his time. Especially the Phill Harrison and David Jaffe interviews stand out.

And I respect his general opinion on video games.

I'm in the minority here but I really think the bombcast needs a bit of a shake-up. I really enjoyed Dave's appearance last week and I think Patrick would be suitably placed in the podcast.

Make it happen.

I don't go to GB for news but still it's pretty awesome for the site.

I like my 4 man Bombcast with Jeff, Ryan, Vinny and Brad though and I hope it stays like that, maybe with PK joining for news? 4 men is the sweet spot.

Don't know how I would feel about having him on the Bombcast (it's really hard to tell if it'd work out well before listening to a few episodes of it), but the man's done a pretty damn good job with news the last few years so it's a definite plus for the site. Also the fact that they are hiring makes me worry less about Whiskey Media folding or something.

I actually had someone tell me that during an interview recently. I laughed. Then felt sad.

In actuality, I've been blessed with enormous opportunities in the years I've been writing and reporting about videogames. I've bounced around because of those opportunities. Work with Adam Sessler? Reboot EGM? How could any person say no to those things?

I'm at a place in my life, though, where I've moved around enough; switched jobs four times in the last four years. I'm sick and tired of it. When I was looking for a place in the Bay Area, I was looking for somewhere to stay for a good, long time.

Giant Bomb is that place.

I've been offered every other job in my career out of nowhere. Giant Bomb is the first one I went after. Hard.

I can't wait to get started.
Yes, but how do you feel about potatoes?

Yup. Bombcast has become kind of stale. Last episode with Dave was great tho.

Can't figgure it out - why Giant Bomb is so popular here at neogaf?

Why wouldn't it be?

Gerstmann + Davis + Caravella + Shoemaker = hilarious VG coverage not found anywhere else. (sp?!)

But like many others, I only go for the bombcast and videos - never read their news stories. But I guess they realise that, hence the addition of Klepek.
