'PC development has skyrocketed,' GDC survey finds: 80% of developers are now making games for PC, more than double the number working on PS5 or Xbox.

“The percentage of developers making games for PC has been tracking upward for years. 56% of developers said they were making games for PC in 2020, a figure that rose to 58% in 2021, 63% in 2022, and 65% in 2023. Interest in developing for PC is also way up, reaching 74% of respondents to the survey, a big jump from 62% last year.”

The best way to play. The best place to play. I will never go back to consoles.

I'm drawn to complexity. StarCraft, WoW, Satisfactory, etc. all require to much APM or too many buttons to play well or competitively on a controller. I like shooter games and such, but i kind of like games that require a ton of keybinds to play well.

Then you throw in the random fun co op games like Lethal Company and the mod community behind it.

Visuals aside, these are core reasons i stick with PC. I bought a PS4 in 2015 to play Bloodborne and 10 years later it's the only console game i like i still can't buy for PC, but thankfully the emulator community is fixing that.

It won’t be long but eventually PC will swallow the whole market and we won’t have to deal with such situations.

There is no reason every game shouldn’t be on PC. Good for gamers. Good for business and profits.

The only people who have a problem are the fanboys and wahhh why does PC get to play it better?? How could Sony betray us like this???

On the one hand I hope this encourages developers to go back to making AAA PC exclusives that really utilize the hardware to makes games that a console just couldn't handle, like Crisis back in the day.

On the other hand, thanks to console first development I've been able to happily game on a 2080 for almost 6 years. I don't want to go back to buying a new card every 2 years lol.

The market would still settle for what is the average consumer. Developers wouldn’t suddenly price out the main market.

Switched back to PC as my main platform last year, never looking back.

Games, emulation, mods, free online. My only regret is not doing it sooner.
I used Playstation and PC for 20 years. But after Sony's decision to finish exclusivity my main become PC. I have PS5 since it's release but it will be my last PS console and probably sell it in the coming months.

Maybe in the future I'll buy Switch 2 (when the OLED screen released) for their exclusive titles. I didn't have any Nintendo console up till now and maybe it is high time that I give it a try. If Nintendo brings their game to PC I won't buy their console either because I got Steam Deck as well. But don't think Nintendo will shoot their leg themselves in that matter.

Nevermind, PC deserves this. So much freedom and flexibility.

The more interesting news is that there are more developers working on VR than gamepass and Switch 2. And that it has 114% of devs working on it! 😄

Back in 2013? That came to console too. At least post star citizen or something.

Consoles need to be more transparent and update players with whats trending and hot, that helps. Especially for smaller devs.

Every game coming to store should be highlighted, at least on release date.

Steam has right idea here.

The average pc which is about as strong as a ps5 is also responsible for not making those games anymore.

Same same, just ordered my third SSD for my final slot on my motherboard.

I plan to do dual-booting ahead of schedule.

CachyOS + Win10. Since I was planning to switch to Cachy as main for gaming as Win10 will reach end of life. But my dumb ass can't wait no longer. I actually enjoy tinkering a bit more than I'd like to admit.

Free games from all around.

https://gg.deals is my best friend right now.

It is soo much cheaper than console gaming, and everything is 60 fps.

Tired my first Xbox layout controller from 8bitdo. Ultimate 3 Mode and I'm surprised.

My base PS5 is collecting dust, waiting for exclusives. But maybe if we get only an agenda driven exclusives I will just sell the damn thing, and put in a newer CPU than my Ryzen 5 7600, maybe some x3D chip.

Still giving Ghost of Yotei the benefit of the doubt but Intergalactic from ND is like meh for me.

Yeah bit of a self fulfilling loop there.

"Why buy better hardware if the games aren't going to take advantage of it?"

"Why develop games for high end hardware if the average consumer doesn't have it?"

Back in the 90s and 2000s games would come out that made you want to upgrade your hardware just to play them. I feel like that doesn't really happen anymore. For better or worse.

There would be more console games fron indies if sony and ms policies and tools wouldnt be so ass backwards
I used to use both of their oddball policies as a hidden seal of quality, because I knew that a game was A) Not in early access anymore and B) Finally patched to what the dev wanted to do on release, which meant it was ready for a console release.

Times have changed for both in the past few years though. The level of what they both allow through and Early Access titles being accepted on both PS and Xbox meant that they no longer had that hidden feature.

I’m a bit confused by this statement because MS and Sony do exactly this on their storefronts.

On Xbox I dont find top 100 played games, top 100 sellers.

Even their Upcoming release lists are not by date and some far away games are arbitrarily added.

I can use these 3 on steam to sort out games that are trending, and to my taste. Don’t want to limit myself to high reviewing games.

PC will continue to grow. I have just been in meetings where I listened to how a major retailer in the UKs next big marketing campaign is going to be "trade in your consolr for PC parts, or a pre built pc"

This is expected to roll out in 2025 and beyond. A major turn for the focus of the largest retailer of white goods in the UK.

They mentioned that the console market is shrinking at an alarming rate for them. Xbox is basically none existent and the ps5 pro is not selling as they expected.

Interested to see when this marketing push rolls out.

I’m not at all surprised. With the console architectures being so similar to PC now and the current health of the platform it's more often the case that you need a good reason not to release on PC. The 20% that aren't will be exclusives, mobile only games, and maybe that one dev that doesn't want nude mods.

The days of obscure PlayStation architecture meaning it was a world of extra work are long gone.

It’s quite funny where we are now, and who could blame them? These consoles are just glorified mid gen (if that) pc’s. The last exotic console was the ps3 with its cell architecture, its so sad that Cerny didn’t care to take creative freedom with ps4/5 the same way Yoshida did. All Xbox games and pretty much most PlayStation games make their way to pc’s at some point, and the waiting gap is getting smaller as time goes on. Who could’ve seen this coming?

PC is at the top again wow, I actually love that. Creative custom spec feature that doesn’t abide by dev presets which most of the time have that nasty ghosting taa in many console games. Seriously what’s the point of the ps6? Another amd cpu/gpu? What’s going to be the new secret sauce this time? We’re so many years into the generation and all we’ve had with the ps5 ssd is fast loading times…that’s great? But what about loading uncompressed textures or using the ssd as RAM like it was alluded to in the beginning? That never happened and probably won’t for many many years. I’m going to keep maxing out my pc and buy a switch 2 since those games won’t be available anywhere else.

I’m going to have to double check on my Xbox console to see if I can find these answers for you because their phone app sucks compared to PS and Steam.

Speaking of PS I’m glad you didn’t bother bringing them up as an example because I could potentially find all of that in their app, which matches the console store 1:1.

There are people here who still think of PS store’s features as if it’s the PS3 generation.

I wish I still had friends at a major UK games retailer so I could get insight like this, I didn't realise it was that strong for PC.

Guys it's worrying that devs can't even release a graph without bugs. 114%, and how exactly do you release a game on Linus? I didn't know he was a platform.

2007, and it's a meme
The image looks like it's from 2013s Crysis 3 but I guess it must be the remaster from 2020.

PC is just in uncontested when it comes to value. You can play *almost* every game in existence on it. It's just insane and gets better every year. Thanks to advanced emulation and community that keeps up to date even old games (just look at recent Mario 64 port...) the PC is a place for everyone.

I can't even imagine myself buying a closed up console with 80€ games for 'modern gamers', limited indie selection and ai upscaled remasters.

Was PS3 the one where they initially claimed that having more products with the same chip would improve it's processing power? Like your Sony stereo and Aiwa dishwasher would network together and make your ps3 faster?

That sounds so ridiculous I feel like I might have imagined it, but I swear that was the initial pitch for some game console.,

Pc value is really poor for online games due to cheating unfortunately

You'll never go back to playing consoles but you were in the astrobot thread saying how astrobot was worse than mario odyssey and how odyssey was objectively a great game. How could you possibly judge both of those games if you don't game on consoles and you're all in on PC like you're claiming in this post??

Same, but already mid last gen. For me there is no more reason for consoles, except maybe a Switch 2. We have the most exclusive games + endless mods, yet the console fanboys fight over their few games like toddlers. The current Astro Bot thread for example is too funny.

What there is no need for is fanboys, including PC ones. Consoles are fine and have their place. One platform doing well is no reason to start gloating and wishing death to everything else.

Worth noting that there's also a quiet upswell in x86 handhelds. They sell well enough that most companies are developing new models. And x86 handhelds fix the #1 issue with laptops, namely true portability.
And, while you can't play stuff like Space Marine 2 at full blast, there are tons of smaller games which are perfectly suited for them.

And it makes sense. Nvidia's shit is ~$1000 (dat Jen-Hsun Huang tax). Even if you slum it out with AMD, it's still ~$500. Just for a video card, so you need the rest of the PC as well.
Whereas an ROG Ally X is $800, and runs just about anything that's not trippul-aay. And, if you're the tinkering sort, you can put SteamOS on it, for a roughly 15% performance boost.
