'PC development has skyrocketed,' GDC survey finds: 80% of developers are now making games for PC, more than double the number working on PS5 or Xbox.

What kind of a poorly worded question is: Which platforms are being used for your current project?

It isn't the same as asking: Which platforms are you developing your current project for?

Same, but already mid last gen. For me there is no more reason for consoles, except maybe a Switch 2. We have the most exclusive games + endless mods, yet the console fanboys fight over there few games like toddlers. The current Astro Bot thread for example is too funny.
Yeah, I feel the same.

No more fanboyism, Doobie is free.

I would have never guessed I would try an Xbox layout controller, being with PS layout all life.

But here I am enjoying a mechanical keyboard, op1 8k + bungee. And Xbox layout controller.

Same thing with current pressure about new GPUs, I won't sell mine till I upgrade and I have no pressure so I wait till March.... And not bitch about it.

Since AMD Linux drivers are more OP.

But I can go either Nvidia or AMD - it all depends on pricing. I can always upgrade from 6700xt to either brand.

And if RX 9000 series will be a bust, there's always RX7900XTX or RX 4700 Ti Super/4080. I have no need to be on the latest greatest, just looking for and fair priced upgrade.

Will have a look on used market for sure if people are crazy enough to sell their older GPUs fairly cheap.

Thinks buying more servers can fix a bad patch
You'll never go back to playing consoles but you were in the astrobot thread saying how astrobot was worse than mario odyssey and how odyssey was objectively a great game. How could you possibly judge both of those games if you don't game on consoles and you're all in on PC like you're claiming in this post??

The decision to never go back to consoles can be made after playing both Odyssey and Astro Bot.

For me the main key point for still beeing a console player is the simplicity
(Beeing able to turn it on with a pad, only updates are Game and OS Updates, everything already configured for pad useability, perfect for couch gaming), and beeing able to use game sharing, so I can use one game or subscription on two consoles at the same time.
Power consumption on PC is something people should not forget too.

Having options is always nice, but most of the time I just want to play on my couch and big TV without fiddeling around with Windows/Drivers etc.

You can start developing games on PC for free, no such thing on consoles.

So after you finish you can easily port it to Xbox even if you have custom codebase. PS5 is more challenging, however if you are using Unreal or slop like that, its literally few clicks away (granted if you aren't using some custom plugins which does not have X/PS codebase)

I wish I still had friends at a major UK games retailer so I could get insight like this, I didn't realise it was that strong for PC.

for a little clarification, according to the retailer in their presentation, over 2 million consoles are sold in the UK each year. Obviously that covers the big three. So the market is still huge for console. They just see a considerable decline in console and an uplift in PC. They want to get ahead of the competition to provide trade in of consoles to incentivise buyers to replace their consoles with their specific retail chain instead of looking at alternatives.

I bought a PS5 because I assumed there would be a wait before the new Final Fantasy games came to PC and then an Epic Store exclusivity time as with Final Fantasy VII Remake. That didn't happen with Final Fantasy XVI or Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, so I'm not expecting it to happen again.

Final Fantasy is my top favorite series, so I found buying a PS5 to be a necessary gaming-related cost but I don't think I'm going to do this again and buy a PS6. This is also why I bought a PS4 (FFVII Remake)... this is almost why I bought a PS3 (Metal Gear Solid 4). I don't like being in this cycle. I loved the PS1 and PS2, but Sony doesn't feel like what they used to be and I don't want to have to buy another console.

It's an example of how lame consoles have gotten that PC is turning heads away at all given all the benefits you just listed. No one would bother getting off their ass to do anything unless the deal had gotten that much worse.

Yeah bit of a self fulfilling loop there.

"Why buy better hardware if the games aren't going to take advantage of it?"

"Why develop games for high end hardware if the average consumer doesn't have it?"

Back in the 90s and 2000s games would come out that made you want to upgrade your hardware just to play them. I feel like that doesn't really happen anymore. For better or worse.

Aaa budget is like 100x or more of the 90s or the 2000s. It's purely driven by money.

Look at star citizen. Games has a budget of a billion dollars and they are still early. No normal publisher would pay this kinda money to be available on limited hardware.

The differencees between pcs and console versions were actually strong back than. The economy in the industry is completely different.

Well since they switched over to basically of the shelf PC parts, they are just PCs with more comfy OS.
None of the state of the art hightech tech in the consoles anymore.

As long we have gamers/users who are not tech savy, consoles will stay.

Maybe it is just me, but I think the newer Generation of people are less interested in techs/fidelities or things that can be complicated.

It’s quite funny where we are now, and who could blame them? These consoles are just glorified mid gen (if that) pc’s. The last exotic console was the ps3 with its cell architecture, its so sad that Cerny didn’t care to take creative freedom with ps4/5 the same way Yoshida did. All Xbox games and pretty much most PlayStation games make their way to pc’s at some point, and the waiting gap is getting smaller as time goes on. Who could’ve seen this coming?

PC is at the top again wow, I actually love that. Creative custom spec feature that doesn’t abide by dev presets which most of the time have that nasty ghosting taa in many console games. Seriously what’s the point of the ps6? Another amd cpu/gpu? What’s going to be the new secret sauce this time? We’re so many years into the generation and all we’ve had with the ps5 ssd is fast loading times…that’s great? But what about loading uncompressed textures or using the ssd as RAM like it was alluded to in the beginning? That never happened and probably won’t for many many years. I’m going to keep maxing out my pc and buy a switch 2 since those games won’t be available anywhere else.

Peak gaming right there

Anecdotally I see a lot more Japanese developers, big and small going PC. Dōjin games which used to sell 200 physical copies on Comiket are now on Steam.
The platform is growing and it's basically frictionless compared with the competition. Simply hand Gaben 100$ and you're good to go, press the publish button when it's done. For everything else there's a song and dance with applying, suck a lot of dicks, getting approval, devkits and the certification process.

The list is believable since many of the shovelware I have see on Steam are games that will never have the chance to be seen on the likes of PS5 or Switch.

Why make console a lead platform when people think your game is just worthless trash if it isn't some single player cinematic game with a 500 million dollar budget, and you can't even do early access?

On the one hand I hope this encourages developers to go back to making AAA PC exclusives that really utilize the hardware to makes games that a console just couldn't handle, like Crisis back in the day.

On the other hand, thanks to console first development I've been able to happily game on a 2080 for almost 6 years. I don't want to buying a new card every 2 years lol.

The average pc which is about as strong as a ps5 is also responsible for not making those games anymore.

This. A 3060 is the dominating hardware on steam. Developers are taking that in consideration when it comes to developing games. I believe they tried with immortals of aveum that required high specs and that was a big flop. Developers are going to maximize on pc so games like Crysis not to say they couldn’t happen but very far and few. The more mainstream pc becomes the lower the hardware that gets utilized. Especially now with handheld pc’s coming into the equation.

The more interesting news is that there are more developers working on VR than gamepass and Switch 2. And that it has 114% of devs working on it! 😄

Back in 2013? That came to console too. At least post star citizen or something.
It didn't. Was another "downgraded" version on Cryengine 3 and without the mods that there are on that screenshot.

I love pc gaming at a desk with a keyboard and mouse but until Windows 11 gets better gamepad support and more reliable HDR and surround sound implementation I will stick with consoles for my home theater.

I have turned my PC into a console.

Look I used to be against PC gaming because it was about basements, tiny monitors and 200 dollar gaming mouse playing Diablo.
But in 2025 I'm playing weebshit on a 4k TV with a Dualsense.

Wasn't this always the norm? Like the amount of games releasing on PC dwarfs anything on all consoles combined or is it because of PCMR having like defacto BC that the library is gigantic

I mean the article said that 19,000 games released on steam in 2024. That’s more than the PS5, Xbox and Switch combined in one year.

I mean, the thing is I can't help to think that there is cross-pollination going on. Both Sony and Microsoft not only release on their own platforms, but also PC.

It won’t be long but eventually PC will swallow the whole market and we won’t have to deal with such situations.
And who exactly will finance all those big SP AAA projects then when there is no more consoles?

There is no reason every game shouldn’t be on PC. Good for gamers. Good for business and profits.
Wrong - money and time are limited resources that companies compete for.
More competition = lower chance that your product will succeed.
Rising risk is not good for business or profits!

The only people who have a problem are the fanboys and wahhh why does PC get to play it better?? How could Sony betray us like this???
The only people who have a problem are those that dont understand that most AAA PC ports wouldnt exist without consoles to begin with!
Why do you think PC only AAA games have died off?

No.
More competition = companies have to make better games.
"Make better games" means spending more money on the games or the marketing.
Spending more money means higher budgets.
Higher budgets means the risk of not earning back that money is alot higher.

Who gives a shit about business or profits? This is great for gamers.
Come on now, you cant be that naive - games are a business!
The ones who give a shit are the publishers investing the money!
Do you think they would still do that if there is no market for those?
Where are all the big PC only AAA games that arent Star Citizen or Live Service?

It already has all of that.
I have an older gaming pc hooked up to my AVR that I recently upgraded to Windows 11. Windows 10 had a setting to enable 5.1 audio. In Windows 11 it’s just…missing. I’m not sure why but I couldn’t find it in settings anywhere. I could probably dig through google and find a solution but that’s the point of my comment. I don’t want to. With a console I just check the box and it works.

Doesn't have to. No need to spend more if you spend smart: improve management, reduce the unnecessary workforce and scale down if needed to, because bigger doesn't always mean more fun.

You’re wrong. The PC market is only growing and becoming more accessible.

The user base and demand will always be there. It’s not like people without an Xbox are suddenly going to quit gaming. They’d just move to PC.

Just admit that everything is becoming a PC. It’s better for everyone.

Well, yeah, but 90% of this is shovelware. PC basically has no entry barrier.
Have you looked at PSN or eShop stores lately? The latter is full of same crap as Steam.

And unlike Steam, PSN and eShop filtering and discover capabilities are complete disaster.

I agree that bigger doesnt mean more fun, but the point is that any sort of big AAA Singleplayer game that the PC is getting as port nowadays would simply cease to exist.
