PC Engine/TG Appreciation and Collecting Thread, Because who needs a 2nd controller?

maybe the switches are at fault ?
I was worried about that. It came from Japan so I don't really want to have to send it back. I was really hoping I was using it wrong somehow.

EDIT: D'oh. I just read this about Magical Chase, the game I decided to test it with.

Being that the standard Turbo controller is made up of 2 standard buttons, a bit of creativity was added. This creativity is the fact that you can’t use the rapid-fire feature because presssing the fire button twice will immediatly make use of one of Ripple’s supplies that you buy at the store.

Can anyone else comment? My game was pausing, not using items, but sounds like I should test it with another game to be sure.

Is Pac-Land actually any good?

aye it's not bad. not arcade perfect but certainly a good pc engine version, namco did some good ports although I never thought they were pushing the pc engine like I wished they would compared to some other developers... ie
Irem, Hudson Soft, Konami etc..

Is Pac-Land actually any good?

Let's just say that there's a reason that Super Mario Bros. is a legendary classic, while Pac-Land, which predates it by a year, isn't... it's not a terrible game, but it's not that good either.

But on the note of Pac-Man, it's pretty strange that, given how many games Namco released for the TG16/PCE, they never released any other Pac-Man games other than Pac-Land... though looking it up, very few of the the other Pac-Man games that gen, either Pac-Mania, Pac-Attack, Ms. Pac-Man, or Pac-Man 2, ever eleased in Japan on any of the 4th gen platforms, so I guess that's why. Of those Japan got SNES Pac-Man 2 and GB Pac-Attack, both in '94 well after Namco stopped supporting the TG16 in mid '92, and that's it I guess.

Yeah after watching it, I might keep an eye Valkyrie no Densetsu or something.

That being said, are any of the shooters two players, because I really need to get a PC engine duo compatible multi tap at some point.

Here's my old list of TG16/CD games which support the multitap. It should be complete. A second section listing only the shmups is at the end.

Turbografx/PC Engine games require a TurboTap multitap for any simultaneous multiplayer modes -- the system has only one controller port. The multitap supports up to five players.

As far as run & guns go, I think that Mystic Formula might be the only one with multiplayer... and it's not exactly loved. Seems to be considered average at best.

I picked up a Core Grafx recently. I needed to get it modded for RGB as I can't stand composhit. It came with a Ten no Koe Bank 2 module so i decided to fit one of Broken's RGB amps to it. Also I used a 21Pin female SCART socket so could use standard SCART Cables with it.

Turned out quite well and the picture is amazing now in RGB. I just need to mod the shell to fit the socket and its done.

Some Pics

Thanks Falcon, thats pretty thorough!

Yeah, that list is useful I think...and actually somewhat valuable, now that the PCECP site that was one of the main sources has mysteriously vanished from the internet!

For a correction, Forgotten Worlds is in the upper main list, but was missing from the lower shmups-only list. I fixed that.

Gates Of Thunder and Ys 1 & 2 and 4 are such great games and worth owning. Only played GOT on Virtual console though, and still haven't managed to finish it. It just gets crazy in later stages.

That fake Ys 4 is an amazing game. Still one of the best, if not the best Ys for me.

I would like to buy a PCE but I have many doubts.

First of all, going HuCards only or CD too? I read a little this topic and I noticed Duo models are easily to be broken, so before spending a lot of money i'd like to know it is a worth

Second problem is output video, i don't have any CRT but I use a Framemeister Mini hooked up to a 27" IPS monitor
Actually I have hooked a Saturn with original RGB cable and I am ok with it.
But PCE needs a mod or a external cartridge for RGB output afaik and I don't know if i can find one of them here in Japan...

Not sure about your options in Japan, but ebay user DoujinDance sells ready made RGB modded Region Free PC Engine Duo R's and RX's. The R's go for $270 + shipping, but relative to other prices in the market that's actually pretty good. That's what I got and it's fantastic.

But there is a japanese RGB cable? cause I can't use euro ones on Framemeister, that's the reason I bought here the RGB cable for Saturn and I did not bring the one I had at home

I have to take a look about how much RX costs here...

If you're semi capable with a soldering iron I'd recommend getting a vanilla Duo R and installing this. http://www.neo-geo.com/forums/showthread.php?249063

You'd need a EU SCART to Framemeister solution but this is easier on your wallet in the long run anyway, I think.

The image is stunning, people say it looks way better than the DoujinDance solution too. One thing is for sure though, I have no image interference as is common when installing RGB in a PC Engine.

I had been super anxious when selecting an amplification solution in this machine due to bad experiences in the past with my Core Grafx II. Broken's package with the SCART lead and 8 pin DIN is an absolute bargain if you ask me.

Interesting new RGB out option on the way for TG-16 and CoreGrafx users:

http://www.retrocollect.com/News/db...t+-+Retro+Gaming+&+Game+Collectors+Community)

As amazing as the TurboGrafx 16 and PC Engine are, the video out ports on the reverse of both iterations of the console are somewhat lacking. While there are modifications and official expansions to address this, they’re anything but ideal. db Electronics, however, is about to address all these issues with their newly announced db Grafx Booster TTP.

This custom built board - also known as the Twin Turbo Power Audio Video Enhancer for Pc Engine & TurboGrafx - simply slots into the expansion bay of either console, introducing two new video out ports for a much cleaner image. For the majority of gamers, the familiar red, white, and yellow RCA connectors can be used for a composite signal, while the pixel perfect aficionados can look forward to RGB out on NEC’s console - using the same connector as a Mega Drive 2.

While similar to the Turbo Booster, the db Grafx Booster TTP doesn’t offer the save memory features that the official add-on brings. Nevertheless the ability to experience NEC’s back catalogue in true RGB without any modifications to the console will be worth the investment alone.

No price has been set for the db Grafx Booster TTP as of yet, although it is expected to be released mid-November.

Interesting, but useless to be without the ability to save or use the CD attachment. Wasn't there something similar one of the users here was using earlier in this thread?

Not sure if this was posted before. Anyways yeah, interesting option but too bad it negates being able to use the CDROM attachment.

Brilliant response. Trust me, I've done the same thing. I also thought my Avenue Pad 3 was not working properly with Kato and Ken-chan, but it turns out I just didn't have it plugged in all the way >_>
I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one!

So many shooters on the PCE. I need to pick one to play through.

We should all pick a shooter for a week (or month?) and just try to beat it to run through em.

Of course I kinda fell off the Genesis/Megadrive challenge posts due to time constraints...so...yeah.

Episode 3 of Diggin in the carts made me want Magical Chase. Even the JP prices made me sad.

Its an eventual at some point game like Burning Rangers, Snatcher, Panzer Dragoon Saga, Hyper Duel since I really do want to play them, but man.

EDIT: I've been meaning to dive into Air Zonk / PC Denjin for awhile now, so I think i'll hit that.

Finally found a copy of Rainbow Islands, and man I love that game. Graphics so colourfull and such an addictive game full of secret stuff. Wonder why they put it on a cd though, since Parasol Stars, the sequel came out before on Hu-card. Was printing on CD's cheaper by '93?

We will never know some of the choices these game companies make.... but when you beat the game you will find something that no other version will have !!

also this arrived in the post recently, compiled and put together lovingly by a guy called Sunteam Paul
