PC master race help - crash galore

Hi all,

Since 1,5 months ago I've upgraded my PC to a high end one.
However, I've been encountering many problems with some of the UE5 games.

Mafia the Old country would keep crashing and have weird graphical glitches like triangles flashing all over the screen.

Clair Obscure Expedition 33 is even worse and can't even get past the first cutscene due to it constantly crashing. It also has weird visual glitches.
Really don't know why Sandfall gets so much praise when shit doesn't even work.
Also submitted a ticket on their website and there's 0 response even though that was more than a week ago.

My setup:
  • OS: Windows 11
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090
  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D
  • NVIDIA Drivers: Latest
  • Motherboard BIOS: Not the latest but close to latest as I've checked the version plus like previously mentioned only got my gaming PC since 1,5 months ago

Things I've tried:
In-game settings:
  • Switched TSR to DLSS
  • Turned VRR off
  • Disabled motion blur

Steam settings:
  • Disabled Steam overlay
  • Forced the game to run on DX11 instead of DX12
  • Ran the game .exe as Administrator
  • Verified the integrity of the game files

System settings:
  • Disabled VRR
  • Forced the game to run on Windows 8
  • Upped my Shader Cache size to 10GB via the Nvidia control panel
I've probably tried more things but I've tried so many I can't even remember all the things I've tried.

Idk if this is the UE5 jank everyone is on about. As oddly enough, many people have had problems with Wuchang Fallen Feathers, whereas I've never had any issues with it. Dead Space Remake also 0 issues.

What do I need to do to get games consistently working?

Try installing an older driver (use DDU to uninstall drivers)
If you're getting graphical glitches on the post screen or bios then your gpu is bad.

Try reconnecting your GPU. Also stop any overclocking you might be doing, that used to make me have funky graphic glitches when the gpu could no longer handle it.

It's a command line interface.
Right click on the Windows start menu, and click on Run Powershell as Admin.
Ok so I just run PowerShell as admin and type the /RestoreMana line first thing?

I don't think it's cause of my GPU as some of the other games run without any issues. It's very game specific.

One of the first things I'd do is uninstall the graphics drivers and install older ones. Go back a few.
But this would be a game specific solution right? So I can fix one game and possibly break another one.

Try with another gpu if you can. Or run some stress tests. Is your psu reliable?
Unfortunately I don't have another GPU. I think my PSU is reliable. I have the Seasonic PRIME TX-1300.

This is going to sound stupid, but... is your computer overheating? The symptoms sound like it.
No both the GPU and the CPU temps have been fine.

Maybe odd question, but how would reconnecting my GPU solve the issue when some other games run fine? I've never overlocked my CPU nor GPU btw.

Try testing RAM with memtest. Crashes could be from that. Chipset drivers installed?

Clean nvidia drivers with DDU, install some previous WHQL ones, reset evertyhing to default (including all compatibility settings) and try games again.

I don't know, just thought there is a slim chance it's some sort of sort of odd infrequent connection issue. When I had issues with graphic glitches they weren't consistent like you've mentioned. Even the same game would be fine until the character model was randomly spikey triangles or something.

Mafia the Old country would keep crashing and have weird graphical glitches like triangles flashing all over the screen.

100% GPU Issue.
Do a full DDU driver cleanup here : https://www.wagnardsoft.com/display-driver-uninstaller-ddu
Then reinstall GPU driver.

If still happening, RMA your GPU.
It's 100% a GPU issue. Even if "it doesn't happen on all games", flashing triangles is core GPU problem.
Stutter/Crashes would be harder to diagnose but here this is clear.

have you tried to turn off and on the monitor?

also i was having some weird and random stutters... i used Chat GPT to troubleshoot the issue... solution:
🤷🏼‍♂️.

First off send me your 5090 so I can test it.

For real though, yes go back a few gpu driver versions, run some tests with your games and if still no go RMA.

Your power and temps seem to be fine as is your RAM so as some have already said it seems all point to the GPU being the culprit.

Borrow a friend's GPU to test if you can.

Remove your GPU, test for a couple days with your CPU integrated graphics, likely the crashes will be gone.
Then RMA your GPU.

Constant crashing could be a problem with your RAM. My mate's PC kept constantly crashing, he thought he had heating problems and even changed his case and fans, it changed nothing. I told him to turn off XMP from BIOS and that fixed everything.
But graphical glitches sounds like a GPU problem. Either a driver issue or straight up faulty GPU.

Sucks that you're experiencing this kind of stuff as a new PC gamer.

Like others have said this is most likely a GPU issue. The cause could be bad drivers, issues with power delivery (connections or PSU) and well, bad GPU.

I recommend re-seating the GPU and power connections to it from both GPU and PSU side. See if that helps at all.

Then if it doesn't, clean uninstall the drivers with DDU and install fresh.

Also, what PSU do you have? Can you check power consumption and GPU load in some of the heavier games that work?

Edit: if nothing helps, might need to RMA the GPU.

First thing, do a clean install of the GPU driver (latest stable) and just keep an eye on temps with something like MSI Afterburner or HWiNFO.

Second, I know memory frequency/timings can be tricky with AMD (I've used Ryzen from 1st gen up to a 5950X before switching to Intel), so I'd run it at stock clocks/no OC (disable XMP).

UE5 sucks, so I'd also test some other games that don't use it.

If none of that helps, just RMA the GPU.

Sometimes, if it's different between games, it's best to enable the statistics display - at least then you can see what is going on with the hardware.

To pluck some recent examples - Indiana Jones would randomly plunge to 10 fps - my vram was near the threshold so certain scenes pushed it over; another game looked smeary - DLSS was rendering 720p and then upscaling it for framerate. If it's game specific, it could even just be they are pushing the GPU too far and there is not enough power getting to it for some reason. I had quite a few weird issues when I upgraded to a 4080 super from a 3080 - it met all the specs, but when I checked the stats, it was not quite right on the power side and a new psu fixed it.

What's your monitor frequency? You may need vsync on if you have a 5090 and a 60hz monitor. You could turn off frame gen and dlss too, to see if that helps. The weird artifacts do make you think it's something the GPU is doing with the image after the game has rendered it.

Thanks everyone. I was about to try using DDU to uninstall my drivers but then I enabled hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling and now I can finally get past the first cutscene of Clair Obscur Expedition 33 and this time also no visual glitches at all. Don't know if further issues will come but for now this seems to work.

Any details on the PSU you have? 5090 is going to be pulling a lot.
I have the Seasonic PRIME TX-1300. Any further info that's important?

That would be my guess, RAM or VRAM - that is how my GTX760 died.

Oof sorry to hear poppabk poppabk . Although I don't think it's a RAM issue. I have 96GB of Kingston FURY 96 DDR5-6000 RAM.
Braag Braag Ye it sucks since I've saved up years just to be able to get a new gaming PC. If I experience further problems I'll try using DDU to see if that solves it. If not then I might tinker with the BIOS. Preferably I don't wanna mess with the BIOS much. As I'm quite the PC noob haha.

God, I just bought a 5080 and haven't installed it yet, pray I don't have any of these issues.

OP, I hope your issues get solved quickly and without too much further pain.
Thanks for your kind words man! I hope everything goes a lot smoother for you. Fingers crossed and enjoy your new 5080!

Thanks for the tip. Will definitely turn the displays on more often. I have the ROG PG32UCDM so 240HZ.

That might be it indeed, glad it seems fixed!

Now enjoy this masterpiece, Expedition 33 is the game of the generation for me so far <3

One other thing to consider is setting FPS limits on the problem games. I used to play a Final Fantasy game that had an uncapped frame rate that would red line my computer trying to squeeze literally every frame it could possible. Other people on the steam forums would report crashing and graphical glitches (I had glitches after some time) and capped the framerate of said game and my case temps came way down and the game was fine afterwards.

What i find interesting is how OP is a self proclaimed PC-Noob but then literally has a Digital Foundry rig.

I feel that if you invest this much in that kind of high-end, you ought to know a little what you are buying and doing.

What is your ram setup? I prefer single channel at least 2x32 GB. Also Your motherboard and graphics model. Make sure your PSU is ATX 3.1 with minimum recommended of W1300.

Master race LMAO

I forgot we live in the world with 100% reliable hardware and software:

Huh? Since when do people with money need to know the details? If you can afford it an build it as your first rig, so what? Why wouldn't you buy something that is recommended by others? Isn't that a solid sign of being a noob? A more experienced PC builder would pick parts based on their incoming brand bias like, Never Buying Asus because that Athlon motherboard sucked, or Gigabyte = Ass because I had to RMA a 600 series GPU from them. Or Fuck Intel because I worked there and they were fucking assholes.

You can have money and not know how to troubleshoot a PC. Its like BMW M3 owners- very few of them turn their own wrenches.

Yes but lets be real- console is about as bulletproof as you can get. Basically the Toyota of gaming.

I had strange visual glitches and really poor performance with a laptop before. Turned out it was infected and mining crypto for someone.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned this, but check Event Viewer after a crash. There may be more details there. If you see something there, I would copy and paste it into Copilot or some other AI client and get some recommendations that way.

Right Click start button in Windows > Event Viewer > Windows logs > Check Application and System logs

Yes, but no hardware is issue free.

In the case of OP maybe it was software and he fixed it but maybe it was bad GPU, in this case warranty exists.
