Average PC gamer vs the illusion of "Pc master race"

PC parts have become stupid expensive since the mining craze and Moore's Law died. Most people did not buy enthusiast parts before that, but it's even less common now. When looking at it that way, consoles have only become a better value proposition in recent years.

Yeah, the actual baseline spec for a gamer on Steam is something 5 years old. Console gens actually probably do a lot more to push PC game min specs up than PC hardware gens do.

I think mid range is fine. I would probably go for a 4070 Super vs 4070 vanilla, because it can be the difference for a few games on the border like path traced Cyberpunk. But for the most part it will crush anything you throw at it (maybe with some help from DLSS).

I'm going to guess he meant the base consoles only otherwise yes, a silly comment.
I see, but even then there's plenty of games where a 2080 gets raped by both Series X and PS5.. and a 2080 sure ain't a Mid-Tier 2018 PC.

Guess you can take that post in an hyperbolic, over the top, fooling around kind of way, because otherwise that there's people actually agreeing with it is insane.

That just sounds like RE Engine is made with DX11 in mind. Sony won't bother optimizing and updating their software on PC. It is like ColecoVision releasing bad Donkey Kong ports on other systems to make their hardware look better.
Nah, we usually see improvements and patches on these PC ports. Some are objectively much better than PS5 version with additional new settings, like Rift Apart or the Spider-Man games that can be pushed noticeably above the original console version on high end PCs compared to Pro. I think it's more of a matter of funds and efforts.

RE2R has a DX11 version that can be tweaked to look far better than the (non-native) 4K 60fps with RT on Pro. Devil May Cry 5 on PC is a bit of a bummer though. Capcom dropped the ball with that one in many ways.

Even with ray tracing on, both the PS5 and Xbox Series X run at a dynamic 4K, and apparently, the XSX largely stays at a native 2160p. The PS5 typically runs at a slightly lower, but still very respectable, 2016p.

Well RE2 should hit full native 4K now on Pro even unpatched. It does run night and day compared to base PS5.
Perhaps it's going to get official Pro support next month when it finally releases physically, like RE4R that does run at native 4K.

OP:
8c/16t Intel/AMD
32GB RAM DDR 4/5
16GB VRAM GPU
2TB SSD Gen 3.0 x4

This will get you 1440p 120+ fps gaming

According to tech Jesus you absolutely do not need current gen to have a great gaming experience. You can go back as far as four generations maxed out and still have a computer holding its own for this generation of overpriced BS. By those metrics you would STILL be ahead of the ps5/pro well up to the PS6 release. If people are flexing 4080/4090 gpus at you with 9000 series AMD then they are either trying to live vicariously through you, or attempting to justify their overpriced shit.

You do you. And get what you need to be happy for the next 3 or 4 years.

For me it is still on a i9 10850k @ 5.0 GHz, 32GB DDR4, 3.5 TB of PCI 3.0 x4 m.2 2280 SSDS, and a goddamn RX 6700 XT 12GB. I have had it since 2021 and most likely will keep another couple years since it is not hamstrung playing games in the least this generation.

Only problem I see with your build is running AM4 when AM5 is on its second generation of CPUs already. I wouldn’t go any lower than 7600x/AM5 today.

I am building a new modest rig and on other forums I got some shit because "its not future proof enough" My mid range budge build plan: Ryzen 5 5600x cpu, 4070 gpu, 32gb ddr4 ram, along with a 2tb 1.4 nvme drive and another 1 tb backup. Will my system be a world beater? No but should it play games for the foreseeable future? Hell yea (A 4070 is around 29 teraflops) My budget build around $900 but if I listen to many of the "experts" opinoins on parts that shoots to around $1200-$1400"

That had me doubing myself and got me to invesitage on what the average PC gamer uses to game on. Going by the forums I have been on, YOu would think that everyone was rocking 4080 Supers, 4090's, or at the Least 7900xt's. What I found was down right laughable. For those who do not know, Steam does a Hardware Survey on what gamers use to play games on their platform. What I Found was Quite shocking. Yes there are a hanful of PC gamers with money to spare who are rocking the latest CPU's and GPU's and fastest ram, yada, yada, yada. The vast majority are not. Here is what Steam found the average PC user used to game with just last month

Average PC Hardware on Steam:
OS: Windows 11 and Windows 10 are about 96% of user OS.
Ram: 16 GB (does not specify Speed)
CPU: Vast Majority have an intel CPU of (2.39-2.69 range) mosty likely in the lower end market of intel but there isn't enough info to say for sure (6-8 core range but that doesn't mean anything because $100 phones come with 6 core cpu's)
The top 5 gpus used in October 2024 for PC gamers: I am not a PC snob but this made me kinda vomit in my mouth a little: Top 5: 1. RTX 3060 2. 4060 (laptop version) 3. 4060 4. GTX 1650 5. RTX 2060 A GTX 1060 is in the top 10. Less than 1% own a 4090 about 2% own better than a 4060
Average Vram: 8gb
Average Resolution: 1080p

My point is, don't listen to the PC master race people who flash their digital cocks around about how much better their system is. The vast majority are rocking medicore to slow PC's. Looking at the Specs of the Series X and PS5 compared to the average PC hardware, it's clear to see the conosles outperform the average PC gamers hardware.
It’s not just about performance. There are thousands of games that are played exclusively on PC. Neither PS nor Xbox have thousands of exclusives. but yeah, I agree that performance wise, a lot of people act like they all have RTX 400s.

I don't mean it in that way. I mean that they are going to port it and be done with it good or bad. Maybe patch it once if it is egregiously bad as in the case of The Last of Us. I will say that their Days Gone PC port has amazing image quality and performance given the quantity and speed it renders so many objects at. It could probably run native 4k at 244hz on 2080 Ti.

No, there really aren't plenty of games besides a handful of PS5 exclusives.

Of course, you might still run into VRAM issues with the 2080, but then you got DLSS and better RT, so that definitely balances things out.

can u emulate on Series X or PS5 ? like, can u play Nintendo, PS1, PS2, Sega, Neo-geo on these consoles ?

can u play old games with better res, frame rates, assets on these superior consoles without the need of a "nextgen" patch ?

can u play online without paying a fee, have cloud saves or easy save backups ?

can u upgrade whenever you want without the need to wait for some new console release ?

can u have true BC without begging Sony and MS to do it ?

can u mod the game to ur linking ?

See, even an average PC system can do more than a "superior" nextgen console. My point is, we don't flash our massive digital cocks because we have better specs ( even if a lot of ppl do ), we flash our massive cocks cause WE don't need to eat shit, we have a LOT of options and we have FREEDOM to do whatever we want with our system and thats why WE are MASTER RACE.

OP basically made up the strawman that ALL pc users were supposed to have great hardware. What makes it the master race is options and flexibility. If someone uses old junk parts to make a PC just so they can play Minecraft with a mouse instead of gamepad, they are a member of the master race. But people who actively hate options cannot process that this could be a feature and project that the only point is power.

I see, but Horizon for instance received updates for years, I can see the same Ragnarok receiving further improvements over time.

Days Gone ain't really surprising as the game is an optimization masterpiece.

It did admittedly have performance issues at launch on PS4, but it's still a massive open world with hundreds of characters on screen, that looked like this on consoles:

A massive open world running at 60fps looking like this on base PS5 is still impressive to me. We should have had the sequel by now.. sigh.

Maybe not necessarily raped, but there's also RE Engine games for instance running considerably better on both Series X and PS5 than 2080, no?
The post also stated "Mid-Tier 2018 PC" though, and a 2080 ain't.

Not realty the value proposition difference is the same as it's always been,

It's just now PCs and Consoles get shitty hardware unless you are willing to pay through the roof. PS5 pro is overpriced and the base PS5 has had no price cuts.

I got an MSI Katana B12 laptop. Laptop version of 4070 with just 8gb ram and a 17” 1080p screen.

It ran the wukong steam benchmark demo at really high settings at around 55 fps. It looked great.

Haven't seen that, but it's possible the 2080 will run out of VRAM in RE games. I know the 3080 with 10GB can crash with RT turned on due to it running out of VRAM.

And the 2080 was still a high-end GPU in 2018, so you're right in that regard, but then again, this was the beginning of modern NVIDIA who decided that fucking their customers was more important than loyalty. $700 and barely faster than a 1080 Ti that sold for the same price 18 months prior. RT and DLS were mostly irrelevant back in 2018, so it's not like you could use that excuse at the time.

Actual PC dudes use it ironically, the time of people who actually legitimately thought of themselves as the PCMR was long ago. PCMR is nothing more than a label or a joke these days but console players act like we actually rep that shit
The PCMR thing started off as a joke anyway

Here's the rig I'm getting for christmas. Costing me close to €2000 which is over-budget. Absolutely fuck all wrong with it and it'll handle anything I throw at it @1440p for quite a while (I know its 4k capable but @ 1440p it'll have an extended lifespan). I asked on a few enthusiast boards about possible hardware conflicts, bottlenecks, etc and it was the same shit...WHAAAAT!!! No no no, you want the 4090, you HAVE to get 64gb of ram, that PSU is SHIT, you need a €500 cpu cooler instead of the cheap ass one you have, blah, blah, blah. I'm a pc gamer and love PC's but by Christ do I share my passion with some complete CUNTS.

It's insane how good this game look and the target platform was a PS4. On the other hand, you got turds like DD2 that don't even look like mid-tier PS4 games, but they run like shit even on a top-tier PC. I have no idea what happened, but it seems there has been a brain drain of programmer/engineers and that we're left with the less capable elements. I often look at modern games and how they run and look compared to much older games and can't make sense of any of it.

I suspect you're looking at older games through rose colored glasses. Lack of optimization has been an issue for console ports forever really.

I mean, that's what PC is for, ultimate scalability and vast variety of games. You can still play tons of games with an old ass RX 280. There's also a ton of work laptops where peoples create a steam account for a couple of games that bring the average down. In the end, RTX 2000 + 3000 + 4000 series now climbed to majority of cards which is not too shabby.

Nobody gives a shit about PCMR except for console warriors that are insecure. Never see this mentioned outside of warring on forums.

I've had medium rigs almost all my life until covid times and likely will return to it because prices are stupid high now also, for little to no return except to say that you put all settings to max, those settings that you have to zoom 800% times to see the difference between ULTRA EXTREME WILL IT RUN setting and the medium one used on consoles 🤷‍♂️

Immmm poooooooorrrr!!!!!!

This is like saying you want to buy a fast car, so you go to a pistonhead forum to look up whats what and see that most of the guys are pushing 700HP+ or talking about 1000HP+ cars so you start thinking imma need 700HP or more to keep up.

Then you look at the car stats and realize the average car is like a frikken Toyota Camry or something, and you make youself feel better cuz whatever shitty car you get can beat a Toyota Camry or whatever.....
That Camry driver isnt part of the pistonhead crowd.

Same way people who just need to play game and have no idea what CPU/GPU/RAM their system has are just here to have fun or do a job, they arent part of PCMR.

Ofcourse the most common GPUs are gonna be mid/lower end, because most people dont have disposable income to buy a 1000 dollar GPU.....not only that, they probably dont even know what GPU is in their system right now or how to upgrade it when the time comes, its a prebuilt and they are just happy that it can play games and do all the other stuff PC can do.

<-----Still rocking a 12400 because this little fucker doesnt know how to give up.

Brother could've spent $100 more to buy AM5+Zen 4 and a non EOL platform. But he went and did his own thing which is totally fine, but chose to bitch on users on here. Because he wants confirmation bias.

Its hardly suggesting someone to buy a $2000 PC. He already stated the had a 4070 already in the PC build thread.

Fyi I'm still on AM4 and wouldn't suggest going with a 5600X and AM4. 5700X3D isn't even that much more and that was also recommended. But OP can enjoy whatever.

12400 is still amazing allrounder CPU.

Who cares what people say? They’re not paying for it. Truth be told most new games with fancy graphics are downright junk. And I say that as a sucker who bought a 4090.

I'm having the most fun lately by playing Abiotic factor online coop with a friend, a game that looks like Half Life 1998..

Sits @ 96% user reviews on Steam and its early access, but so much content already.

One of the most satisfying crafting/building in a game and I typically don't like them. Best level design by a wide margin.

Wait he is choosing to buy an AM4 chip now??
We are on second gen AM5, whats the logic of doing that?

The 12400 was supposed to be a stopgap CPU till I could get a 135K or 137K (I was waiting for whatever the nextgen LGA1700 was going to be) but everything I throw at the 12400 it eats, so ive seen no reason to upgrade.
Looking at ArrowLake it also doesnt seem worth the effort of getting a whole new platform, so im gonna ride this out until my 12400 is actually begging for mercy, hopefully then there will be a CPU really worth upgrading to.

No car making 700hp stock is shit lmao

In the analogy the user would have bought a BMW 116i and then made this exact thread cept about the average car owner.
Pistonheads aint gonna be impressed with that 116i especially when for the money they advised him to get something better like a Civic Type R.

All current consoles are basically mid tier PCs from 2018/2019
No way. A PS5 when well optimized for is basically a 3700x/2080 class PC. Higher in some games like Ratchet that have that Directstorage GPU overhead. Back in 2018/2019 that would have been high end, with the 2080ti being the only faster GPU on the market.

The Pro is faster then everything in the Turing generation with only the Ampere 3090/3080ti GPU being much faster, and the 3080 being faster as well but not by that much. Only compared to the Ada 4000 series can you say the Pro is mid tier.

CPU sure, but even in 2018/2019 that was a good CPU.

I haven't started yet but agree with that. I don't plan on using any sata devices but have RGB/front panel connectros and such. Luckily I have a modular power supply that should help.
