PC Racing Sims

My God, nothing has the right to be this much fun.

Mk I Ford Escort... droooooool.
P&G 3 is a great sim and one we should have suggested! Lead physics developer for P&G is Aristotelis Vasilakos who now works for Kunos (Assetto Corsa) in the same role.

When people suggest GTR2 these days, they basically mean 'P&G3', don't they? ;)

I recommend the Porsche ST. It's the least powerful of the 911s, but the most enjoyable to drive, imo.

@Mascot ...and a whole slew of people who made GTR2 are the folks behind pCARS.

And some of those same people remain at SimBin too.

There is conjecture as to which 'team' made what when SimBin and Blimey! Games (AKA SMS) were partners in sim creation - I sure as hell don't know but I like their products!

He's building up quite an impressive CV..!

I love the old 911s so will definitely be giving this a good blast.

I've said elsewhere that I'll probably wait until Rift CV1 is out before building the gaming PC, but I'm sure GTR2 and P&G3 will keep me more than happy in the interim. I don't want to cast aspersions on the big two console sims (because I've had a lot of enjoyment from them over the years) but the few races I've had so far on GTR2 and P&G3 have really made me realise what everyone in PC land has been banging on about for so long. I'll still play FM4 and GT6 occasionally but for quite different reasons now.

Anyone here had any problems with the CSP V2's? Mine are barely a month old and last weekend they were absolutely fine, I tried using them yesterday for the first time since then and the brake pedal was leaking? Whatever is inside the black rectangle thing had some gunk on both the pedal-side and the loadcell-side. It's also now making a noise whenever I brake and I can feel the pedal ... skipping[?] almost as if it's now scraping against the casing or pushing through several air bubbles. It's not smooth and it's quite frustrating when I'm trying to race.

The tracking of the pedal in iRacing hasn't changed but it's really worrying and annoying given they're not even two months old and how expensive they were.

Have you seen much improvement with chromatic aberration in 0.4.2?

-----------

ISR Looks at iRacing's forthcoming driver swaps. This has spent a long time in the oven, and by all accounts works great. I think this has got a ton of potential for being a really fun, community building experience.

BTW, I saw on Shawn Cole's site (lol, right) that his replacement at ISR has already left and started his own channel. Not much of a fan of that guy either, but I got a little laugh out of his predictable demise.

I've not actually tried that yet. From the SDK release notes it sounded like it would only make a difference if you were using the closest eye relief setting, but others are saying that it looks better across the board. Will report back. :)

So huh... Jason Dunnington also left InsideSimRacing now to start his own channel. Looks like really nobody wants to work with Darin...
That was a rather different first video. I won't be subscribing to his channel but I do wish Jason all the best with his venture.

On iracing forums Darin said he couldn't afford to keep him on. Take that as you will.
Can't afford him !? How much this faux Jay Z was asking to co-host this little web show ?

Anyway I will give a chance for a while, but I already stopped watching TheSimPit, Shaun Cole was relax and funny with Darin, but alone he's stiff and boring, talk like a robot and review ridiculous hardware who sell 10 units a year.

Assuming that page 30 of this PDF is still valid/up to date, people who backed pCARS will be paid back depending on how successful the game is, and which tool pack they bought.

Only just learned about this now, assuming it's still the case, this means that if the game sells 1mil copies, everyone who backed it to the Full Member level (£40 I think, the lowest one that gives you a copy of the game) will get £175 at the end.

EDIT: Based on the variables at the bottom, too, of course. No idea what the current figures on dev costs and backer amounts are at the moment.

That's how the WMD system works. Unlike Kickstarter, backers get a cut of profits based on how much they funded in addition to taking part in the full cycle of development. That PDF is a bit dated and the details have changed a bit after it was voted to go next gen and PC instead of last gen and PC, but bakers will definitely still be getting money based on how many copies the game sells.

Wasn't there something somewhere about only backers who were "active during developpement" or something like that would get money back? I remember reading something about some kind of weird metric they wanted to use to decide if somebody would get money or not.

I legitimately didn't know that, I just backed the game without reading up on WMD, just wanted to support the game and try it out, lol.

Not that I know of. WMD investment system is a bit of a double edged sword. It's good that people get money back from their investment. It's not good that many people had their investment in mind when talking about features.

Since GTR2 was brought up:

How much of the GTR2 braintrust has had a hand in pCARS?

If I keep asking questions about pCARS, it's because I want to get back into the racing sim game, and all these other ones seem to be windows only...

Seriously?

How disgraceful.

Fake edit: Looks like you can still download it from RaceDepartment. Fuck the FOM.
That's because Race Department owner (I think) Bram has received threats from the FOM in the form of an e-mail complete with case number. He sends them back a polite e-mail response, complete with case number, from RD ;)

The FOM have companies who roam the internet looking for these 'breaches' and send generic cease and desist letters. The FOM should be prosecuting people who sell fake F1 merchandise and not modders who aren't making a cent from their mods. The easiest way to get around it is to follow the examples of other devs - use the vehicle silhouette and call the vehicle something else e.g. Ferrari becomes Maranello, McLaren becomes Woking Racing etc.

Yeah the problem is the team is in disagreement about the seriousness of the generic letter, therefore a lot of the team has stopped working on it so there is slow progress.

So I spent the weekend with the G27 in various games, and I have to say that I like it a lot. The first game I tried it with was of course Euro Truck Sim 2. Playing with a wheel (and my new TrackIR5) in that game makes it an entirely new experience. SOOO much better. I can now back up the rig like a pro, lol. Next I played some Dirt 1 & 2 with the wheel, and was surprised at first to be actually getting worse race times than with my Xbox360 pad. It was just a matter of getting used to it however, because now I'm definitely doing better. The wheel and pedals just allow so much more precise control. I went back and forth with racing automatic tranny and using the clutch/shifter, I'm much faster with the automatics in the Dirt games. Manual shifting felt like multitasking overload to me, heh, just couldn't keep up with everything going on. I'll have to practice with it some more.

Pretty much spent all of my gaming time this weekend between those three games. Have yet to try it with any other driving games, but I did realize that I need more modern racing games. Maybe it's time I splurge on Asseto Corsa....

Okay, HOLY SHIT, I had quite the epiphany with my G27 wheel this weekend. I went from liking racing with it to absolutely freaking LOVING racing with it!

Let me explain.

So I've been enjoying my new G27 but I've also been having a hard time adjusting to it. I've been racing with my Xbox 360 pad for so long that I simply chalked up my difficulty with the wheel to adjustment period stuff. Now, racing with the gamepad I pretty much always raced from the 3rd person view up and behind the car. I've tried it many ways and many times and this view was always where I got my best times. It just felt better to race with. I also of course always had force feedback disabled (gamepad). So I have been racing with the wheel with these settings unchanged for the most part.

Now Friday night I bought Grid for $4 on steam, installed it, and proceeded to completely FAIL at this game. I mean every race with the AI set to basic was a last place finish for me. My cars were all over the track, I was smashing into everything, I just couldn't control anything well enough to even have fun with it. So I start fiddling with settings. In the end I ended up turning force feedback on, adjusting some wheel settings and switching from the 3rd person view to the hood view instead, and HOLY FREAKIN SHIT what a difference that has made! Force feedback is AWESOME! It's really my first experience with it, but wow you can really feel the car just from the wheel alone. I can tell now when the back end is coming around in a turn and counter steer appropriately, I can feel when I lose traction and start sliding. In a matter of minutes I went from finishing last place with a wrecked car every time to being competitive and placing on the podiums, I even won a couple races.

So, with this newfound knowledge I decided to fire up one of my favorite racing games, Dirt 2, and try playing that the same way: from the hood view with FFB on.

DEAR LORD what a difference that made! It's like an entirely new game! Suddenly I'm driving like a pro, drifting around turns and winning races left and right. I always had trouble with the small course races in Dirt 2, but now I'm weaving my way through them like a champ. It's made the game into an entirely new experience, I always avoided some cars in Dirt 2 because I just couldn't control them worth a damn, they were unplayable for me with the gamepad. Now, some of those cars are suddenly my favorites to drive. You can literally FEEL the road though the steering wheel.

Man, FFB is great. I now understand when people say that FFB and wheel support is a must for them. I get it. I'm not sure I can ever race without it again. I need to go through all of my driving games and try this out now. Man, racing the hill climbs in Dirt 1 are going to be SUPERB like this.

I could kick myself for not buying the G27 sooner and racing with that damned 360 pad for all of these years.....

Really, they should pass a law where it's illegal to select the chase cam when using a wheel.

Oh man, that's horrifying reading that! I wish we'd known before cuz we could have halted such blasphemous behaviour earlier.

Glad you got it figured out now, at least. Welcome to racing games. :)

About manual shifting, you should try it after some time. :)

Yep, last weekend when I tried driving with manual it just felt like too much to do, I was having a hard enough time driving at all from the 3rd person view with no FFB. I was thinking last night that with how great it feels driving NOW from the hood view with FFB that I should give manual shifting a try again. I was having so much fun with the way I had it set up though (with the auto) that I just wanted to keep on driving rather than mess with settings!

Or turning off FFB...

I'm still amazed how much of a difference FFB makes in game. When I bought the G27 I had no idea it was going to be THIS much better than driving with the gamepad.

And yet, the Dirt series is not a shining example of good FFB (I'd say it's pretty poor tbh, albeit better than the comedy WRC series), so I'm slightly surprised at the level of your reaction.

What? Are you serious???

Okay, so what game is an example of good FFB then? I'm curious as all hell now, because I love the FFB in Grid and Dirt 2 that I've played so far, but if that is bad FFB then I'm having a hard time imagining how much better good FFB will be...

rFactor 2, Assetto Corsa (don't like it in some oversteer situations, gets too heavy), pCARS (with cars furthest in development).

Dirt 2 had great FFB overall. Haven't played much the other two tho.

Forget FFB, we need a hydraulic USB inner ears connector, allowing us to feel slip angles and acceleration.

Race you all to the patent office!

Try LFS demo. It's only 100MB. A bit old, but man, that FFB is really good for what's worth (besides, LFS, even being so old, is a perfect gate to introduce yourself to sim racing).

I've been through this not so long ago. I always was a fan of racing games, since the first Grand Prix, Top Gear, Super Monaco GP, etc., but never played with a wheel. At first I was "what the hell, I can play better with my X360 pad!" and "this is not cool, this thing is pushing my hands. I cant control the car properly!"

But then I got used to it, and it felt gooood...

I tried to learn to play with manual gears, but I always though that it was too much for my head, and gave up a few times, but a few weeks ago I decided to try it again with Grid Autosport. It was hard at first, but after a few races, it was almost natural.

If you want a direct comparison to Dirt, RBR. For track-based sims, rF2, iRacing and GSC would be my suggestions.
Yes, RBR is sublime.

I have yet to buy GSC. Shame on me. i-i

Anyway, I do have RBR installed on my PC, but I couldn't find a way to use a wide screen video format. I found a mod, but I couldn't make it work. It's playable the way it is, but it could be better. Does anyone knows how to solve this problem?

For what it's worth, I know RBR has STACKS of mods available for it. There was a guy who did a tonne of free camera mods and the like for various racers (like NFSHP, Most Wanted and about a billion others), I'm sure he'd have one as well.

You could also check out Widescreen Gaming Forum (?), they have a wiki for hundreds of games and how to get widescreen (and higher resolutions) in them.

I find it baffling that someone in their 40s (or however old he is) is so childish when he doesn't get what he wants. Kind of thought he changed for a little bit there after Shaun left but whatever.
