I'll just leave this here...

I wasn't sure if I was going to run the V8's next season, but fuck it I think I might just run GT3 and V8's instead of the RUF Cup. God damn. Hopefully they'll get the updated Falcon and Monza out for S1 2015.

Stop talking and release the nsx :)

Never going to happen :(

Hello everyone, I have a favor to ask. Can anyone here who owns Dirt 2 on Steam try to log into their GFWL profile to see if it works or not? I'm trying to log in and it won't let me, and I can't seem to find any info on anything changing so I'm wondering if it's a problem on my end or not.

Thanks.

Not now, but I'll try when I get home tonight if you like.

Does project cars have a good career mode?
It does. It's a career based on motorsports. Meaning you choose a discipline (you can start from the top, don't need to grind your way from Karts to LMP1) and drive the championship. Depending on your performance, you will get offers to move to new teams and/or higher tier disciplines. You can also get invitations to cups and other kind of events (such as endurance races, etc.). These invitations are both based on performance and number of races done, so those being less skilled can play them as well.

Signing up.

You're a smart man :D Be sure to rub our noses in it when you get it.

As long as I have a working T500 I'm going to sit out upgrading. As sure as the sun comes up these toy wheels will break, so the AccuForce wheel is really the class of wheel I'd like to step up to next.

I got my GTX 980, now I just need an Oculus Rift and this and I can cash in my ticket to sim racing heaven.

It appears from the video that Reiza supplied their assets from GSC-E and the ISI track guys ported it across to rF2. This cross work between ISI and Reiza must mean something long term e.g. Reiza using isimotor 2.5 in the future.

Sweet. Reiza gives a track to ISI. ISI give a track to Kunos. Kunos give a track to... Who's next?
Sector 3. Kunos donate their Spa laser scanned mesh to Sector 3 who give their engine sounds to Kunos, Reiza and ISI.

(Fantasy time) In an inspiried move, the four studios combine to become one super-developer with each 'node' specialising in certain car classes with Jay (Sector 3) and Marco (Kunos) obtaining the best licencing deals.

I don't find it surprising these dev teams all get along behind closed doors and follow each other on Twitter ;)

If Kunos, ISI and Sector 3 combined... the possibilities...

Super race at Sonoma (can't we just keep calling it Infineon?) this evening with the UK&I Skippy crew:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bwJddcOLnac

Race starts at about 21 mins in.

I'm #212 as usual, started 9th after a scrappy quali. I don't really feature in the coverage as there was so much action up front, but it's a great showcase for the close,
reasonably
fair racing we get every week on iRacing. :)

Clarke's spin at the end of lap 5 was from Grillo slightly outbraking himself, happened right in front of me. Apart from that there was no rear-ending at all I think, just the occasional side contact. I was caught napping near the start (not for the first time), I find it difficult to instantly turn on the level of intensity required to mix with these guys. I'm all fired up by the end of the race - I often do an official race straight after and I'm much more competitive than usual, having 'got my eye in' as they say. I guess turning up earlier for practice would help, but even then it's not intense like the actual race.

Yeah, i just got a glimpse of you losing a few spots. I couldn't tell if you got divebombed and freight trained, or what happened. Nice recovery though. Infineon is tough too. There's nowhere to relax and collect your wits.

Freight trained would be the more appropriate term! I'm hoping VR will give me more confidence to fight hard from the start of races. With my compromised single display, it can take a few close calls with other cars to tune-in this fake spatial awareness that I've developed over the years.

Terrific race. I don't understand why you end up being 7th instead 6th though.

The coverage cuts away from the action just at the wrong time.

Unfortunately I didn't save the replay, but I've made a quick clip using another racer's data (so you're not seeing full fidelity from my perspective):

http://a.pomf.se/rhzlrg.webm

The cars got bunched at the hairpin and I was being mildly cautious as I saw some minor contact in front of me (the car in front certainly didn't raise its nose like that from my view). Hulbert took a wider line to slingshot the exit, he was on a charge for the whole lap and he muscled his way past. I gave him slightly too much room going into the esses, resulting in a bad line into the left hander - and trying to stay left while already on the wrong line gave me a slippery moment. I blame his shocking pink wheels - very distracting! :p

I kind of get a kick out of people trying different stuff with their sim videos. We've seen Adrian and others do green screening and such, but this is a new one to me.

I think Georg did something similar few days back with some new RRE content.

Oh, neat.

I tried finding it, but couldn't come up with anything. Without having to work too hard to find it, I'd love to see it.

I did however come across this video of the ASR classic Ferrari for rF2 that I seriously needed a minute to figure out if it was real or not. Seeing Prost's honking nose holding his balaclava down really made me pause!

SMS have published a short article on STM: http://www.wmdportal.com/projectnews/inside-project-cars-seta-tire-model/

Racing, whether it happens in the real or the virtual world, is all about tires. That’s why Project CARS is powered by the revolutionary Seta Tire Model (STM) that plays a key role in making the WMD-powered title the most authentic virtual racing experience.

But what exactly does the Seta Tire Model do? Slightly Mad Studios’ physics expert Andrew Weber takes us for a look deep under the hood of the tire technology that drives Project CARS!

SETA TIRE MODEL DESCRIBED

Seta Tire Model (STM) is a full dynamic tire simulation. Actually, it is three coupled simulations, one for the tire carcass, one for the tire tread and contact patch, and one for heat transfer simulation. It is also modular, where different carcass and tread simulations techniques can be used interchangeably. For example, off road racing may use a different tread simulation.

CARCASS SIMULATION

The carcass simulation used in Project Cars is a finite element simulation with specific computational optimizations specific to real time tire simulation. The carcass is discretized into small connected “elements”, each one flexing and deforming due to forces.

Features:

Elastic behavior changes with speed, temperature, and pressure
Rolling resistance changes with speed, temperature and pressure
Sidewall buckling at low pressure
Bias Ply, Radial, or Hybrid construction
Gyroscopic Effects
Dynamic response such as vibration, telescoping, and twisting

TREAD SIMULATION

The tread simulation used in Project Cars is a finite difference simulation of the contact patch, with the tire tread “flowing” through the contact patch. The whole tread itself is discretized into elements much like the carcass, but the contact patch itself is a finite difference grid.

Features:

Flash Heating, which is the change of temperature in the outermost rubber layer through the contact patch.
Componentized grip model. Each component is affected differently by road surface conditions, wetness, and temperature.
Deformation – the rubber deforming in and around asperities, resisting sliding motion.
Adhesion – the rubber bonding to surface rubber and material.
Tack – the sticky tacky grip you can feel on your shoes when walking a rubbered in track, related to adhesion.
Tearing – the ripping of rubber from the tire
Cut – grip from the geometry, edges, grooves, and siping of the tread, with particular effect in dirt and gravel
Tread channel depth and water handling.
Discretized and temperature sensitive wear
Curing
Temperature sensitive elastic properties
The carcass and tread simulations are coupled such that there is no roughness or “stepping”, while still preserving the detail of both simulations. The contact patch size, shape, and pressure distribution is determined by the carcass simulation and is used by the tread simulation. The forces on the tire from the road surface are simulated in the tread simulation and transferred as external forces to the carcass simulation.

HEAT TRANSFER SIMULATION

The heat transfer simulation handling heat flow between brakes, wheel well, rim, carcass, and tread layers. The heat transfer amongst tread elements, from tread elements to the road surface, and from the tread elements to the air are handled directly by the tread simulation (including advection and evaporation). The pressure of the tire is maintained by the carcass simulation via the ideal gas law.

Emergent Effects

Most effects just “fall out” of STM without explicit coding for effect:
Fy, Fx, and Mz vs slip angle curves, complete with realistic nuances, such as Mz inversion
Inclination effects such as camber thrust
Complex and sometimes subtle changes in behavior due to load, heat, pressure, and speed.
Proper behavior at a standstill and very slow speeds, although due to limitations of consumer force feedback devices, oscillations may still occur. Many tire models break down at a standstill.
Flatspots
Hydroplaning
Changed in behavior due to surface differences, such as surface roughness, track rubbering in, wetness, and dirt.

iRacing getting DK2 support in the upcoming build:

DK2 support in iRacing is in beta testing right now, working really well, and will be in the next release. It seems to work best when configured in "extended desktop mode". The UI rendering has been redone this time to fix it in 3D space, it's really cool. The resolution is much improved in the DK2 - and the experience is really intense.

Beta testing, revised UI, that's what I want to hear.

I guess one of the benefits of waiting is that they've sat through a few SDK changes, and seen lots of other games come before them with varying degrees of success.
'Fixed in 3D space' sounds like they're going to do it like LFS, which is by far the best solution I've seen.

Good stuff! Looks like they'll have more time to work on it now too as I found a post on Race Department: "Slightly Mad Studios and BANDAI NAMCO Games Europe S.A.S today announced they will be moving the release of Project CARS for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC to March 17th 2015 in the US and March 20th 2015 in Europe''
