I've got Nero 7 and I have no problems.
I have it loaded on 3 PCs and burn hundreds of discs. Just make sure when you install Nero 7 that you do a custom install. If you let it default (or typical) install it will really bloat it up.
I've been using Nero since the 90s. They're the best.
My post earlier has a free DLNA app...you may want to check that and skip the whole Nero thing.
Onix said:Out of curiosity, does the installer easily allow you to individually select which programs (out of the dozens on there) you want to install?
If so, I might pick it up since you can get it so cheap now.
Also, can you confirm whether the PS3 automatically sees thumbnails for videos when using your version of MediaHome? In the video from the OP, that's what it looked like. I would REALLY like that feature.

Could be a solution.

For whatever reason, Nero Digital Pro is not downloadable to the US. So instead I grabbed the trial of Nero MediaHome CE (I think it's an older one) from http://www.nero.com/nerodigital/eng/download.php
Installed it with all defaults ... and my PS3 instantly recognized it.
Decided to try a WMV file. Works great.
Tried an AVI file. Works great.
Here's the kicker ... 720p .mp4 works flawlessly.
What's insane is that the 720 .mp4 actually starts almost instantly ... it's actually faster than the other formats.

No pause button, no fast forward, no starting a certain time, nothing.
gofreak said:Pause ought to be technically feasible, but fast-forward, starting a certain time etc. would probably require that your PS3 buffers the entire video before playing it, which would cause a much larger delay before the video starts.

TONX said:I just did a quick neat trick, here it is if you're interested.
If you're using Windows Media Player to stream your media to the PS3 you can change the logo to whatever you like instead of the default Windows media logo.
I used this for obvious reasons:
Here's how you do it in case you can't figure it out:
- Go to C:>Program Files>Windows Media Center>Network Sharing
- Change the file wmpnss_color120.jpg to whatever you want (i used PAINT.NET), as long as you don't move it to another folder or change the name of the file.
I don't have a camera on me to show you, but its definitely nice.

I tried watching an episode of Daybreak (avi file) and it is super laggy! I am using Nero MediaHome with all settings on auto-detect. Should I change the video setting to something else?
My PC is wired to the router, but the PS3 is wireless (which I am assuming is the majority of setups). Any ideas as to what might be the problem?
Lain said:How do you do that? To use VLC to transcode through TwonkyMedia and send it to the PS3?
VLC integration via sample playlist
VLC is a streaming server which can be used to transcode video on the fly. Via a simple playlist this application can be used and integrated with TwonkyMedia. Just place the provided file vlc.import.playlists into the twonkymedia.db directory.
Start the VLC application and select the streaming wizard. After selecting the file you wish to stream you need to set the output to HTTP streaming via port 8080.
The VLC playlist file has this content:
#VIDEOLIST
#NAME:VLC
#TITLE:VLC - Stream
#DEFAULT-EXTENSION:mpg
http://127.0.0.1:8080

gofreak said:I guess there's a couple of possibilities..it could be your wireless connection, or it could be your PC's performance with transcoding. What's the resolution of the file? SD files seem to transcode OK for me, but HD stuff is juddery .. I haven't really messed about with the settings to see if any improvement can be had.
Baptizer said:Hi gofreak! Thanks for trying to assist, I appreciate it. The video is a 350MB SD file that is in widescreen format (at work...don't know exact specifics right now unfortunately). My PC isn't exactly old (2ish Ghz AMD64 bit processor; 2GB RAM: 2x150GB HD RAID 0 setup), but it has been awhile since I have upgrade.
I also tried watching some movies we made with our Sony mini-dvd camcorder.....same results: Laggy as hell and when turning on the 'information' screen on the ps3, the rate stops often. It is impossible to watch anything
gofreak said:It sounds like it's probably an issue on the networking end, then. My AMDx2 3800 with 512MB of RAM transcodes SD Divx AVIs fine. Is there any way for you to test with a wired connection to see if it's a wireless issue or not? There's lots of other possibilities too, I guess, but I'm not a big networking expert. Stuff could be happening at your router, with firewalls etc. etc.
Baptizer said:I have a Dlink 624 wireless router and would be more than happy to upgrade if that was the problem. Wish I could test with a wireless connection, but the router/PC are upstairs and the PS3 is on the floor underneath (pretty much directly underneath; I could take the ps3 upstairs temporarily to give it a test).
To put things into perspective, I don't have any difficulties downloading stuff from the PSN (never get a failed transfer, etc) and my wireless laptop has no problems downloading files, etc from the internet when we are on the 1st level (or even in the basement).
*cry*

By the way, the Mac 4.4ß1 will be available today.
Oh, and let's hope EyeConnect finally support PS3 and Nullsoft do a ConnectPS3.
tgenius said:Ok, so the good thing I see is that it works, and I can finally see my music, however, (and this may be a byproduct of the DLNA working) I hit an mp3 and it took about 2 mins to load, in my curiosity, I looked at the status and while it was loading the song, I saw very quickly the other songs in the folder processing in the background. They would fly by; I assume this is the PS3 doing it's own indexing of the folder?
gofreak said:I've seen a delay with mp3s starting also, with nero, but not quite 2 mins. Maybe several seconds. Not sure why there's a delay since mp3s should be passed without transcoding, and videos seem to start immediately for me if they're not being transcoded. MP3s are obviously even smaller in size.
It might have something to do with the PS3 'processing' other mp3 files, but I hadn't noticed it doing that. It seemed to me it would only go and load thumbnails for other mp3s if you scrolled down through the list.
Can you see if videos start faster for you? If it is indeed related to 'processing' other files, my videos may have been starting quickly because at the time only a few videos were showing up (nero hadn't indexed the vast majority of them the last I tried it).
Goldrusher said:It really sucks video always starts from the beginning and you have to watch it in one go till the end.

Photo works great, so does music. Both with all their options.
neorej said:Change the audio-transcoding of audio from Auto-Detect to Keep original format. This way, Nero and the PS3 don't have to communicate about valid audio-formats. Just shove the MP3 right down the pipeline, PS3 can handle it.
(note that all of this theory, I'm at work, I can't test it out myself.)
Lain said:Not even the Nero 7 trial MediaHome works for transcoding Avi stuff for me =/
I guess something is wrong with my PC.
I give up. Unless someone knows of another program that can do transcoding (for music tho, as I give up on video transcoding but I'm still interested in streaming transcodes from my lossless archive) I'm simply gonan set with Twonky for the time being, and WMP11 if I feel the need for some MP4 video I make.
TONX said:OK, so i tested out 3 programs extensively, Windows Media Player, TVersity, and Nero MediaHome. Mind you im using a PS3 connected to a linksys router, WIRED. Here's are the pro's and con's.
Windows Media Player
Pros:
- Fastest response time for music, videos, and photos.
- Customizable Icon (that may change soon.)
- Easiest to set up
Cons:
- No transcoding for anything
- No icons for videos or music
TVersity
Pros:
- Total control over your files (i.e. you can choose to show only videos in your My Videos folder, instead of lumping everything together in 1 folder.)
- Clean and simple interface
- Limited transcoding for videos (works 50% of the time and usually lags)
Cons:
- Music does not work at all
- Freezes occasionally
Nero MediaHome
Pros:
- Icons of your music albums and videos will show up
- Ability to name your media link on the XMB (for example, "My Media Files" instead of just "Computer name: Username"
- Transcoding videos works better than TVersity
Cons:
- Transcoding isn't that much better. Works more than TVersty, but still gets errors
- Convoluted mess of files. It doesn't really organize well at all.
- Takes a long time to shuffle songs, im talking like 5 seconds between songs. Whereas WMP was instantaneous.
So thats my experience with these three. I'm just going to use WMP for now until an actual program comes out and alleviates these issues. Shouldn't take that long until that happens(i hope).
gofreak said:I tried this, it didn't make a difference. Maybe I needed to restart the PS3 after that also for it to take effect..I'll try again later.
Norse said:I see thumbnails for all my videos. Depending on the size of the dir some may take awhile to change to thumbnail.
There is also a 30 day trial version of nero 7 that comes with everything...you can chose what it installs.
