PC to PS3 Media Streaming (DLNA) Thread

Does anyone know of a good (and fast) DVD ripper that can be set to automatically convert AC3 to some PS3 supported audio (PCM even)?

If you rip a DVD to a single VOB, the PS3 will play it. The problem is, the soundtrack doesn't seem to work if played directly ... just the video? I assume the PS3 media player has an issue with AC3 soundtracks?

If your DVD has a PCM soundtrack, you can probably just rip the VOB and get sound ... unfortunately, most movies don't have this.

So it won't work if you rip separate parts of the DVD to a VOB? Maybe that's the problem I've been having.

I'm not sure what you are asking?

By default, a lot of SW rips to 1 GB VOBs ... so a given DVD will have a handful of them ... is that what you mean?

If so, they will still play, but they seem to be video only. If you hit select while it is playing, you'll notice that nothing is listed for audio ... even though the audio is in the file. I assume this is simply due to the media player not supporting Dolby Digital.

Because of this, you have to then transcode the VOB so the audio is supported.

No I mean that when I rip one of my Family Guy discs, for example, and look at it in the application, I see multiple VOB files - some contain a trailer (I guess) and some contain the actual episodes. I have ripped only the episodes and tried to play them on the PS3, but it didn't work. Is there a way to rip a DVD into 1 VOB file only (trailers, menus and all) - is that what I need to do?

Also, how does one create supported playlists?

Make a .m3u (with winamp, foobar2k, or any other audio software that lets you create .m3u playlists) and it should work (at least it does with TwonkyMedia, all the playlists show up in their own Playlist sub-folder under Music).

I found if you make Mediahome transcode videos with MPEG-1 High Bandwidth instead of auto-detect, it works best. I tried it out with most Gamevideos wmv files and they worked. Not so much with HD videos though. Kinda weird that MediaHome has a MP4 option, but PS3 doesn't recognize it. I guess it will have to do until a DLNA program designed for the PS3 comes out.

For anyone who is having a difficult time getting their PS3 to be recognized by their PC connected wirelessly to a router, I think I figured out something that I hope will help you. I could not get my PC hooked up to my router by a wireless card to recognize the PS3 until I disabled the WPA security on the router. After doing this, I dug a little deeper and discovered that you can use WPA security as long as you use TKIP and not AES encryption. Since changing my wireless security from WPA2, which uses AES encryption, to WPA using TKIP encryption, I have no problems seeing my PC from my PS3. I hope this helps someone else as much as it helped me.

Not really weird, it probably tries to transcode to high profile or to a level higher than 4.1, which the PS3 doesn't support (AVC main profile level 4.1 is what the PS3 support max as of now for files).

Yeah if I were a betting man I'd say their 'Nero Digital/MPEG-4' encodes to an ASP format, which is something the PS3 doesn't currently support.

welp, just figured out why my network is so messed up...seems my dsl modem is a router with nat, port forwarding, dhcp server, etc and I never knew because it just had 1 port....so, removing my router from the dsl modem and placing a 5 port switch in its place made everything better.

Gig switch too so streaming should have no bottlenecks.

I noticed when you use nero mediahome that the ps3 shows all the scout directory dirs while the 360 only shows the proper movie, photo, music dir. They need to patch nero to remove all those unwanted dirs from the ps3 interface.

Thanks ... I wasn't sure if it was supported.

It's actually a server side issue in my case. The older version of Media Home that I'm using (the trial version) does support some playlists ... just not Windows Media Player playlists.

Patch with support of PS3 is added for TVersity.

http://tversity.blogspot.com/2007/05/patch-for-firmware-18-of-sony-ps3-is.html

Gonna try it now, have high hopes for it.

EDIT: Still no direct streaming of MP4s, it transcoding em to MP2. :p

:lol the update is totally busted ... you can't even get the server to start.

Oh well, they'll probably fix the patch tomorrow.

I also downloaded the trial for Nero 7 ... so I'll compare the current MediaHome versus the older one from Nero Digital in the morning.

Goodnight.

didnt have this problem, started ok. transcoding is still glitchy though.

Will they even work??

Thanks

Where did you get Nero Digital Pro?

Are you in the UK? The website won't let me download it :(

that might be a server problem. I think you can't stream MP4 over HTTP. You need RTSP. Don't know if thats covered in the DNLA spec, or wehter Tversity supports it.

As for the VOB/dvd ripping question - run it through VLC wizard and convert it to .ps (save as .mpg). It only takes a minute as its just changing the container. But it'll get the audio to work. I had the same problem with .ts files. Now I run all my .ts through VLC first and its fine.

Just downloaded the non-purchase demo-version. It didn't do much demo'ing so looked in the darker spots of the internets to make it less demo-like. Allthough i have purchased for neigh-all my applications before, i really don't want to spent money on software i have my reservations on if its going to work out on my 2 year old laptop.

Twonkyvision works wwonderfully although it doesn't transcode, which is the part where Nero Digital Pro comes in....

* Anything higher than Mpeg2 Low bitrate results in constant 3 second skips

Any help on the subject ?

Twonkey Media streams MP4s fine as well as mp2. So its supported by DLNA. But the problem of tversity as I see it is that for every device you can set only one format in which all video/audio/pics will be converted. So for xbox its wmv, and for ps3 its mpeg2. They got to make changes in the core of the program to get both mpeg2 and mpeg4 streaming without transcoding.

I only started hitting problems with my streaming over wireless when the video in question peaked at over 18Mbps. It only went that high because I forgot to set a limit on the bitrate when I encoded the video.

What is yours reaching when it begins to stutter, and what's the signal strength like for your network?

MediaHome is the best program out there. Now if only you could pause video or at least start them at a given point.
If you're not transcoding you can pause the movie no problems. You can even fast forward, though it'll only go as fast as it can buffer the movie.

about that new tversity patch. if the service doesn't start, it's because it's missing some xml files:

- wmvmp43.xml
- wmv7.xml
- wmv8.xml
- wmv9.xml

i couldn't start it either so what i did was to copy the wmv.xml file i have 4 times and rename those copies to the files needed. after that, the media server service was able start, so until they give us the proper files, this is a temporary fix.

the results? well, now i can have the "auto detect" profile so i don't have to keep changing it from "mpeg1/2 video device" to "auto detect" if i want to use tversity with any other device (the 360 in my case). Divx, xvid, wmv... files work (i already got them to work yesterday, though :)) and MP3s are now working properly too.

I'm having this trouble. However, I get sound in the first VOB so something is really wrong. :)

the PS3 slows down my network speed. The PS3 must be sending on a lot of unnecessary packets as a result of DLNA functionality. I should use ethereal to view the traffic on the network but alas im lazy.

Anyone know why MediaHome will just randomly crash on me? It'll be streaming something fine then just crash.

i noticed when you have a huge library of files that mediahome isn't very stable.

Do you have green bar problem when playing back video files? I've tried changing a few settings from what I could find on google for ffdshow without any luck.

You are using a wireless connection so this could be the problem. Generally if the video ISN'T HD then it should be fine but if it is HD you can expect tons of stuttering. When it comes to streaming, wired is ALWAYS better.

green bar? none. i've never had that problem. are you transcoding your files in 16:9 resolutions? i guess you've already tried, but you might also want to try to update your ffdshow. i really have no idea what the cause might be.

Thank you very much. It shows H.264 as a 'Memory Stick Video Format'. Does that mean it can only be played from a Memory Stick and not streamed?

Dunno if they can be streamed, but H.264 videos play from whatever source you put them on (Mem sticks, pen drives, HDD...)

Allright, i really don't know what it causing the stuttering....

624x352 @ 130kbps / Xvid

Could it be that Nero isn't too good at transcoding Xvid files ?

EDIT : nope .... guess my laptop just can't handle the on the fly transcoding ...

Something like this shows up in pictures. Not all of my videos have this problem. It almost seems like ffdshow isn't handling non-square screens properly but a couple of my wide screen videos work just fine...

Okay ... either later today or tomorrow, I should be receiving a beta version of J Audio Media Center 12 that includes some PS3/DNLA updates. They are trying to get MP3's working with it first.

MediaCenter 12 is a UPnP server (amongst many other awesome things), though there actually are some differences between standard UPnP and the DNLA version. Hence, it is busted on PS3 right now.

With much tweaking of the advanced options, I was able to connect, but only pictures are working at the moment. That said, the folder organization of this thing is incredible (as far as what is sent to the PS3). SOOOOOOO much better laid out then any of the other servers I've tried.

I'm just now messing around with it, but this could be my goto for audio usage once it's working. This thing will directly rip to basically any format ... and then transcode it on the fly. You can use whatever encoders and decoders you want (either install them, or go by command line) ... it can interface to iTunes ... synch with your iPod and connect to your TiVO o_0

I don't believe it does video transcoding, but I can always use Nero or TVersity for that.

One thing they will hopefully be adding is FLAC to WAV transcoding. Right now, the UPnP transcoding is only for MP3 (you can pick what encoder, LAME etc., bitrates, everything), Ogg Vorbis, and MPC as far as I can tell. But anything can be transcoded.

So this will allow me to keep my FLAC library intact, and at list use high-bitrate MP3 on the PS3 from it for now. If they can get WAV going ... that would be awesome!!
