Oh rock of ages, do not crumble, love is breathing still. Oh lady moon shine down, a little people magic if you will.
I wanted to try out PCSX2 since i've got my new PC, but somehow I kept forgetting to actually try it out. This thread reminded me, so thanks for that.
Whole lot more options then something like Project64, pretty intimidating. Time to read some guide's.

PCSX2 recognises my 360 pad on the lilypad bit of the config - but the game itself doesn't. Anyone got any ideas?

I mean, due to this thread, I just downloaded the emulator and I am now playing Shadow of the Colossus.

I have no idea what you're complaining about.

I'm running the game at fullscreen, anti-aliased, up-rezed, at 60fps on my laptop, using a xbox360 controller with literally no problems

Try playing something that isn't a popular first party game or Final Fantasy.

All of the Ace Combat games have black vetical lines at high resolutions and texture issues and AC5 and 0 didn't have object collisions before 1.2.0. Mercenaries hard locks my PC and has serious graphical issues. NFL 2K5 boots about 1% of the time. I don't even bother with games that have a Gamecube version.

Games that needs special settings don't have them auto-applied leaving you to dick around with a ton of obscure settings.

PCSX2 is the only emulator that I've ever seen output ugly interlaced video instead of progressive scan.

Is xpad an option within pcsx2 or separate?

It's a controller plugin for pcsx2. It should be included in the download, it's in the daily builds anyway - http://buildbot.orphis.net/pcsx2/

There's no need to mess around with configuring it either, it just works.

-edit-
In case you don't know how to change plugins go to Config>Plugin/BIOS Selector and click on the drop down menu for PAD. XPad should show up int eh list of selectable plugins.

Any idea how it handles Dragon Quest 8? Any excuse to play that again would be most welcome from me.

Except the phone version *shudders*

Googling the name plus "pcsx2" usually brings up the pcsx2 wiki page for that particular game which probably tells you more than most here could, aside from the obvious "works/doesn't work for me".

http://wiki.pcsx2.net/index.php/Dragon_Quest_VIII:_Journey_of_the_Cursed_King
Seems like any proper gaming PC should run it perfectly, some low-mid ones from the past 2-3 years will probably do the job too.

Reminded me that I should replay the game btw

Ahh, sorry didn't realize that much information on this stuff was out there. This thread is my first proper contact with PCSX2!

Never done this before, is dumping the ROM of my Ps2 as difficult as it seems? I also have never done homebrew stuff before so I would need to set that up too.

IDK, it does vary from game to game, but I haven't had an issue yet.
Just played Mister Mosquito. Looks like a modern day indie PC game with AA on

Is anyone able to get the atv offroad fury/mx unleashed games to run well? Runs at approximately half speed on my i5 750/amd 5850, maybe I just need new hardware.

EDIT: Actually, MX Unleashed runs much better on this new release in the off-chance there's anyone else interested in these games.

Have FF12 running really well on my old Alienware laptop. But it ran well in the last update too so take that however you want.

Back everything up beforehand! Somehow lost all my saves when I updated to 1.0. then the saves I recovered didn't work for some reason.

I never download the non-svn builds (svn is technically at 1.3.5880) but if it comes with default memory cards, just don't copy over the memory card folder
Booted up KH2 from disc with the internal resolution of 1800p* (DX11 hardware enabled and FXAA). Looks great and runs at 60fps.
*I set the internal resolution to 1800p, but screenshots with FRAPS only come out at 1080p for some reason.

Use the program's screenshot feature. fraps doesn't deal with internal resolution for this stuff.
Lol it still has the bug in Xenosaga where it crashes to PS2 OS when you try and save at the second available Save spot. There are more that it did this with as well later in the game. Surprise no save for you.

Did you check the Xinput box in the Lilypad settings and then map the controls?

That's a bug that sometimes happens in the actual game though.

Oh man, really? I was considering going through the whole Xeno line of games soon, and I knew a few years ago Xenosaga was pretty spotty in emulator.

Guess it still is?

I've played through them fine. There are like 2 spots in the actual game that have issues i think in total across 3 games, but you have savestates so who cares. Game itself runs great.

Hmm, set it to 1080p, and (according to a tutorial) turned off native and set it to 2x.

In DX9 mode... Using a 7950 with a Phenom II X4 @ 3.6ghz. Everything is still jaggy and blurry.

Anyone have an easy crash course they can link me to? I can't find any configs for either my card or CPU and the tutorials I find talk about loading custom dlls or plugins etc.

I just want to run whatever comes with pcxs2 and get the best results I can, and all of the jargon and settings I don't understand make it difficult.
2x at 1080p is going to be blurry because it's being upscaled. 3x is what you want, but with that old timey cpu I doubt you'll be able to run some games. (seriously, go to anything from i5 sandybridge and up and all your emulation speed issues vanish, lol. amd just sucks dick at ps2 emulation and is meh at dolphin emulation)

Also don't use Dx9 hardware. dx11 is almost always faster and more accurate. dx9 has a lot of shit where you just can't do anything programming wise

FF12 looks pretty good, just gotta figure out the controller thing lol.

EDIT: Figured it out, missed the down control!

your aspect ratio is incorrect. looks like the image is squashed.

Just got all my save for my memory cards and I'm all set I almost forgot about this. Too bad NBA street vol.2 still lags in hardware settings

I could post some 1080p xenosaga screenshots but they're at 2x from older builds.

Graphics card isn't strong enough to do 3x or 4x :(

How did you remove the UI?

Don't know if PCSX2 has that functionality.

DQVIII 4x Native

Turn allow HW hacks and 8-bit textures completely off or the game won't work.

Texture Filtering, FXAA on

I wonder if there's a type of SSAO you can hack into that game like the basic overlay one like you can get working with Tales of the Abyss

My screenshots always turn out 1808x1017

EDIT: Due to not being in completely full-screen.

I would imagine we can force something through Nvidia Inspector.

FXAA will work for now while I tinker.

4x Native, texture filtering, 8-bit, FXAA

Hack: Half-Pixel Offset I believe cleaned up some of the effects, but caused too many other issues with the frame rate

Speed Hacks: EE/VV on 2

Sound: Xaudio

I really need to fix my control setup for this. I am using M/KB and the current setup isn't really conducive to multiple keys pressed at once while moving.

Thanks. I just realized that I'm dumb for asking because I don't have final mix.

Conversely, I found an easier 60fps code that doesn't require emulator shenanigans.

Code:
// 60 FPS Kingdom Hearts 2 NTSC U/C
patch=1,EE,00356F4C,extended,00000000

// 60 FPS Kingdom Hearts 2 Final Mix
patch=1,EE,00349E1C,extended,00000000

Also, for people who want quirky (RE: partially bugged during the prologue) NTSC character hacking

Code:
//DW Roxas (Hard enable)
patch=1,EE,01C95618,short,00000323

//Oatheekeeper to mickeys key
patch=1,EE,01CEF110,short,00000074

//Joker Reaction command DW Roxas, L2 button (DW roxas w/reaction commands, [B]post prologue ONLY[/B])
patch=1,EE,E004FEFF,extended,0035B55C
patch=1,EE,21CFBDEC,extended,003F00AC
patch=1,EE,01CB992F,extended,00000001
patch=1,EE,01CC382F,extended,00000001
patch=1,EE,11C95618,extended,00000323

sorry, don't know if there is a code to trade Oblivion for the kingdom key, but you won't need one when you get it later in the game

Unfortunately the character shadows are still missing and the sun lens flare shines through geometry. Such problems are quite common with many games (when using hardware mode).

Btw: The latest SVN revision added anistropic filtering in GSDX. At last!

So I got Dragon Quest 8 to work but great scott, the amount of ghosting is asburd. Framerate's good, but that's just insane. Is that "normal" for PS2 emulation or have I used a setting the wrong way?

If you use the other controller plugin (the second one I think) the 360 controller works without any setup needed.
Why, WHY I never noticed this before?
I wasted a lot of time setting those buttons again and again with Lilypad and I use a 360 controller.

how do i update my current version while keeping my save files have version 1.0.0 atm?

Also Milamber are the fmvs fixed in grandia 3 yet or do they still show nonsense in the borders in hardware mode

You can play around with all of the emulation settings while the game is running to see the result. I had success turning off 2D Textures and Hardware Hacks in the menu.

I never could get cutscenes to work though, that's a shame. I even tried Native resolution + Null (Software).

I have no idea why I just don't do that either, waste so much time dealing with this garbage keyboard setup currently.

I bought a bunch of PS2 RPGs and then packed all my stuff up for a move, but I'm really itching to play through some of them. This is what I needed. Thanks, OP!
