People who don't melt the ice in front of their house need their skulls bashed in.

Damnit. I'm walking home last night around midnight. It's dark as hell. About a block from my house I slip on a thin patch of ice. I don't hurt my ankle, but it's definitely pulsing and tender. Not 50 fucking feet later I hit more of the invisible, slick shit. The ankle had about enough and was full in full on pain. I hobble home and go to sleep. I wake up and it feels like my whole left foot's been smashed with a sledgehammer. How hard is it to lay down some salt? You've already shovelled just finish.

Whenever I walked in the winter, once there was rain, which became ice. Then, snow covers ice. Then, when there is not enough snow, I slipped, and slipped again and again. I hurt my ass, broke my back, and an arm.

So I do not walk anymore.

Depending on where you live, if you were walking on the sidewalk, you slipped because of the ice AND they did not have a warning sign, I think you could sue them.

Too many people sue nowadays for the stupidest things. Sure, it is the neighbours fault but geez, let it go instead of looking for the nearest way to make a few extra bucks.

I don't think the topic creator plans on sueing; I was just saying.

Or, like, y'know, recuperate your medical costs?

Yeah, I've got to agree with Odoul here.

If you choose to live in an area where it's prone to snowing, and you don't maintain your property - you're an ignorant prick.

Not everybody drives, and there's also the issue of people just walking in the middle of the god damned road since the sidewalks aren't cleared - creating a road hazard for drivers.

You can shovel the junk. If you don't want to shovel, then you can easily pay a few bucks to the local kids, or unemployed dude, that's looking to earn a few extra bucks to clear the crap out.

I know the city will fine home owners for not trimming their lawns in the summer time. They should similarly cite home owners for not maintaining their property in the winter. What with Cleveland's dire economic straights, and their pipedream proposals to generate more income, fining pricks that don't shovel their property would put this city in the money. Without having to bet on a casino or stop light cameras.

Just another reason to move south. :X

It's rarely ever about that anymore! But, of course, the minute there are medical costs (something more than a simple bruise when you'll have to go to the hospital or something) then yeah, fine, sue them!

Maybe you should just not slip on ice, man. I fucking walk on ice all the time and I don't have problems. Instead of suggesting what other people can do to fix the problem, why don't you try to fix it, man :p.

Ignorant? No. Inconsiderate? Yes.

I dont own the sidewalk so it not my resposibility to de-ice it. Otherwise I'd tear it up and put a shark filled moat in its place.

Dude you're a fucking pussy. Sometimes, ice can't be helped. Good people will shovel their property for snow, but ice may form and they might not know about it. And yeah, if they're really good people, they'll throw some salt or rocks on it, but personally I couldn't care less. Ice isn't very hard to walk on anyway.

In the end, I'm not going to get mad at people for not melting their ice. It's acceptable, like fuck, it just sounds ridiculous to me almost as I'm picturing these people running out the house at midnight and warning you "Hey man! We didn't melt the ice yet, we're soooooooo sorry, please don't hate us!" :lol I mean, you're acting as if they control the weather.

Anyway where I live, I believe it's law to shovel snow, but that's it. And anyway, sidewalks are city property, so go complain to the city or find an alternate route home.

Learn how to walk on ice.
I have most, most excellent ice walking skills, that I've built up during my 23 years of living in icy nothern Sweden. :) To summarize them into a tip to holding your balance: Create as little friction as possible, be dependant of as little friction as possible. If you have to walk past an icy spot I imagine I'm a ball. ;) If you roll a ball over the icy spot in the same speed your at, it won't slip. Mainly because balls really can't slip. In any case, if you walk the same route the ball will take, and maintain the same speeed, you should be fine. May not make a buncha sense, but try it. Be the spoo... ball, neo.

The problem:
You can't just magically melt ice and snow. Your typical road salt can only go so far, assuming you can find it after people rush the stores and buy every bag available for their one car driveway. If the temperature is below anywhere between 15F-20F, the salt will not do any good, as that's about as far down as it will take the melting threshold.

Anyway, *whenever* you get snowfall, and then the temperature dips low enough to freeze water, the onus is equally on you to be careful, and only be outside when necessary. As fair as it is to expect people to a decent job of clearing their sidewalks, you need to recognize that not every inch of snow can be cleared, and that ice will form through melting/freezing, despite how well a job is done by the owner.

If you couldn't see it, why would you expect the home owner to be able to?

Love how people feel they are entitled to tell people how to maintain their own properties. Its fucking below freezing, snow is melting/its rainy so use your head, Einsteins.

Moreover, are the sidewalks even part of ones property? I know if you dump your trash out on the curb anyone can go through it since its on public property.

Not my fukken problem. I was coming home from work at midnight when it was dark. They had all day to fix that shit. If someone has a brain they MIGHT assume if there's snow there will be ice. If you walk past my house I guarantee you there's no ice. My foot is still killing me. Next inconsiderate fuck with a slippery sidewalk is getting an inconsiderate rock through their closest house/car window.

Uhhh..... the sidewalk is city property and unless you could prove that the ice was the result of human action (ie throwing a bucket of water out) you've got nothing.

Exactly. Why the fuck do you need someone to blame? It's FUCKING ICE. Wear golf shoes if you're that uncoordinated.

You are able to read I'm assuming? It's midnight with invisible ice in the middle of the goddamn sidewalk. But just be more careful? Thank you, that is some brilliant shit right there. And you are responsible for land extending past your property. I've seen neighbor hit with tickets for weeds growing in the alley behind their garage. What the fukk do I want to "blame" someone for anyway? Just have the decency to clean the "FUCKING ICE" from in front of your house.

Yes, cause the ice didn't form between 5pm when they possibly shoveled/deiced the sidewalk and 12am when you were walking home. GET A DAMN CAR AND GET IN AN ACCIDENT LIKE OTHER NORMAL PEOPLE

Yeah dude, I haaaaaaaaaaate messing up my ankle or something! I swear the last time it happened it wasn't even sprained but it took around a year for it to feel better. What a sloooooow, gradual recovery.

Dude, homeowners aren't responsible for the upkeep of the public roads and sidewalks in front of their house.

My parents (and neighbors) had a drainage problem that was causing water to run over the sidewalks. This would freeze and become a hazzard. Guess who fixed it. The city. If someone fell and broke their neck it'd be the city's ass.

It really depends on where you live. For us (in Edmonton), snow is our responsibility, however ice of course is not. This is however, city property, though residents are responsible for certain things. Ice is pretty trivial though, I mean that's way harder to control than snow.

Well, you should work on your walking skills. That, or get a fucking car.

Seriously, expecting people to clear the sidewalk just because you're an uncordinated lummox is absurd.

It's pretty fucking assholish to keep telling him to get a car too y'know. Odoul's just letting some frustration out but in the end I don't agree with blaming people for not melting ice :p But still, you guys are just as foolish to tell him to "just" get a car :lol

Grow up, ALL OF YOU!

Probably. A homeowner would be responsible here if say they did something that directly caused the water to run over the sidewalk and later freeze. But for naturally occuring snow and ice? I don't think so, unless you've some homeowners association agreement to take care of it.

In the case of my parents drainage problem it was the result of building that was taking place up the hill so the city was responsible.

You know, I've gone all winter without slipping on ice. And I grew up in Sunny California...

That changed today when I got out of my car and I slipped on the "hump" of frozen snow/ice between parking spots...my foot ended up sliding under my Jeep and my shin got scraped up to my knee.

Of course, I'm the dumbass wearing shorts in the winter

Yeah, it is. I walk places all the time at night and since I live in Minnesota I know to expect ice on the sidewalk. Center your weight so when you take a step it's directly over your foot, that way even if you step on ice you won't lose your balance. I step on large patches of ice all the time and have never fallen down because of one. It's not the homeowners' fault you fell down.
