People who don't melt the ice in front of their house need their skulls bashed in.

I wish someone with actual legal knowledge would come into this thread and put my mind at ease over whether or not some stupid jackass can sue a person because he slipped and fell on the sidewalk in front of their house. The sidewalk isn't my property, and even if it was, who gave him permission to be there? If I leave a saw in my backyard and some moron walks through and cuts his fingers off, am I legally liable? I would hope not, but then again, this is America, land of too many lawyers and simpletons.

Roughly 3/4 of states have laws that state that you must have your sidewalk cleared (i.e., a walking path made for pedestrians) within 24-36 hours of the end of the snowfall, or else you can be fined. Also, if it is not cleared after this time and someone slips and breaks their leg or something, you can be sued. At least that's how it is in NYC.

I'm afraid to go out drinking at school ever since I slipped on ice and fell on my face a few das ago. Of course that's my problem, not whoever owned the property.

My neighbor got sued for this before. If you shovel the sidewalk and somebody slips on ice, you can be considered liable. If the city plows the sidewalk or you don't do anything to the sidewalk yourself, you're safe.

If you choose to live in an area where it's prone to snowing, and you don't maintain your property - you're an ignorant prick.

Not everybody drives, and there's also the issue of people just walking in the middle of the god damned road since the sidewalks aren't cleared - creating a road hazard for drivers.

What the hell? I'm sure as hell not going to bother with clearing any snow/ice in the winter. If clear sidewalks during winter is a public concern, the city can sweep and salt them just like they do the streets.

That's more regarding SNOW, not ICE.

I'm pretty sure you're still responsible if water freezes and turns to ice on your property (i.e., on the sidewalk in front of your house), at leats in NYC. I'll look into it.

Unfortunately, unless you live in one of the handful of states that don't have laws regarding it, not only can you be fined for not shovelling, you are liable if someone injures themselves while walking by, not the city.

I think if you're out walking in ice and snow, YOU should be liable for any injuries. If it's my property, I won't shovel any snow unless I damn well feel like it.

It's clearly the fault of the company that made the alcohol. GO HIRE A LAWYER!

Not my fukken problem. I was coming home from work at midnight when it was dark. They had all day to fix that shit. If someone has a brain they MIGHT assume if there's snow there will be ice. If you walk past my house I guarantee you there's no ice. My foot is still killing me. Next inconsiderate fuck with a slippery sidewalk is getting an inconsiderate rock through their closest house/car window.
I wonder....

If you were coming home from work at midnight, why couldn't they?

If they were to assume that snow maybe equals ice, why couldn't you?

Whatever happened to the phrase, 'Shit happens'?
