Mod edit: A developer who worked on the game has debunked this report. I've also changed the tag from news to rumor.

The game was in development for years until, at the Xbox Games Showcase 2024, Microsoft shared the first gameplay video of Perfect Dark, which undoubtedly looked very good.

However, today with the cancellation of Perfect Dark, a Kotaku journalist noted that this video released at the event was in fact a fake, although he didn't go into specific details:

The Perfect Dark sizzle reel at last year's Xbox showcase looked awesome. Someone at the time also told me it was basically fake. This was a joint project with Crystal Dynamics, a studio that's also struggling with Tomb Raider.

yeah it was pretty clear at the time that it was faked, the time jumps and general smoothness and fluidity of some of the interaction looked heavily scripted.
if those systems were actually in place and decently functional, they could have pushed out even a stripped back ~10 hour game instead of cancelling it altogether.

I mean, it certainly didn't look like honest to God gameplay. So that's not surprising at all. The game had been going through development hell, so it's not a shocker unfortunately.

how often is the core audience fooled by this (fake gameplay) anymore. its usually immediately obvious by how the camera and npcs animate.
shit looked lame anyways if your gonna fake your video at least go all the way like Sony, CDPR, Ubisoft

I doubt it was fake... it looked like a playable concept demo. it definitely looked like it was played by an actual person, as fake player inputs are very easy to catch imo.

Showing fake footage to keep the Game Pass subscriptions and revenue going.

Gross.
The worse part is that it doesn't even work for that... if you see a trailer for a game that may release in 4 years that doesn't lead you to keep subscribed those four years... it leads you to let the subscription lapse and in the best of the scenarios subscribe again when an interesting game launches.

What are they doing when they clock in? Posting on Neogaf?
I figure there must be someone there who knows how to make a game, but many of these people are learning on the job and are figuring out how things work as they go. It's fine when you do that with a few people, but it shouldn't be half the work force.

... member when retards say the GoW revela was "smoke and mirrors" 🤔.... karma is certainly a bitch
People saying that had no idea what they were talking about. The game was being played live in front of the audience at E3. I believe Barlog was controlling it

I cant believe Xbox allowed this to happen. It's just such horrible publicity if it ever comes out. Going forward, people are going to question all their game trailers, and it won't be unfair

I was already highly skeptical of Clockwork Revolutions before this came out. Game looked polished as hell, but they dont even have a release year? That trailer is something you see releasing in 6 months, not 2 years

6 years and all they had to show was a Deus Ex Invisible War tier demo.

I wish Crystal Dynamics was pulling a Gearbox and funding Tomb Raider with the Perfect Dark money, but the reality is that Microsoft gave everyone enough rope to hang themselves.

That's what you think people would do, but subscription services thrives because many/most don't.

We had people here bragging about the "free" games they will get years down the line, while paying $240 each year in the meantime.

Other devs may fake it too but at least those games come out.

Crystal Dynamics deserves to be in hot water too. Let's remember these are the ones pushing Lara "seeker of truth" while faking gameplay trailers.

Despicable company run by despicable people.
