Perfect Dark rumored to be canceled by Xbox

What pains me the most about this is Playstation. I never owned a Xbox but to see Microsoft fumbling it this hard... Sony could really use some actual competition to put them in check.

They do.

Nintendo is competition. Microsoft is still releasing hardware, which will be competition. PCs, laptops, steam deck......anything that can play games is directly in competition with Sony for game sales and game time.

the absolute inability of the AAA industry to make a fucking video game these days is actually insane.

they even already have the entire blueprint of the game done for them... it's not a new IP, it's a reboot of an existing concept.
literally all you need go make this work is a handful of good level designers, 1 good game designer, and a director with a clear vision.

yet, the AAA industry clearly can't do that anymore.
it's either fail after fail, or yearly/bi-yearly releases of the same shit over and over again.

great so MS bought Activision and became Activision. It seems like they are canceling games in the pipeline and the stuff we saw this year like Oblivion were already deep in development they finished them up with nothing new to replace it.

I would much rather have preferred a low key MS that makes games like Perfect Dark than a shitty soulless game pass COD factory.

Noooooo. I hope not. The gameplay video was promising!

didnt Spencer few ago said we will see an update about it, fable, and Forza next year, don't he 25th anniversary? This doesn't sound like a legit rumor.

There was a gameplay video?
Anyways since i haven't seen any footage it's hard to be disappointed.

Dude why? Perfect Dark looked like it was gonna be good. Xbox only cancels the games I'm most hyped about. Phantom Dust reboot, that dragon game I can't think of the name of right now...

This is just depressing.

If you take the whole chronology of what MS said throughout all these years they're really scum to the players. Giving games "for free" doesn't change that fact. They're really the worst publisher and the most dishonest no doubt.

The studio behind Perfect Dark was never even a studio to begin with. To think they've been playing with this thing for almost a decade.

Hilarious to consider that they FOUNDED the Initiative in 2018 as a response to a lack of exclusive AAA games on the level of God of War. There's no coincidence that they started the studio in Santa Monica.
Now, six years later it's completely shit the bed.

They just don't have what it takes to get these games done correctly. They don't have the internal knowledge or culture to get it done.

Perfect Dark mattered when it was the spiritual successor to Goldeneye. It mattered because we wanted more of the Goldeneye experience, plus more, on our trusty N64.

I don't know why should we care now though. Was the story/universe so good that people want more sequels?

What else can a PD game offer that other FPS games don't? Pretty sure the last game that actually played like Goldeneye/PD was Timesplitters. If the new PD doesn't even play like that then what's the point? Might as well play any other FPS game.

I told people that the last time they showed it at the june showcase it looked like fake gameplay. Nothing that was shown looked real at all and it looked like a game in a concept stage and not something that had a base or foundation to it.

Not even a million views since the reveal trailer a year ago. Microsoft needs to realize they aren't gonna get hype for their games until they confirm them for PS5 as well.

I'm surprised that Microsoft hasn't put their foot down and replaced Phil Spencer as well as reshuffle the leadership team at Xbox. It's a fucking mess and everyone can see it. Absolutely no vision and whenever they do stumble across an idea, they 180 and do something else. Strategy is just not a word they understand.

It's a shame too as their game shows have been pretty good recently, although it seems like they are just showing us games that have a good chance of being cancelled at some point.

Believe me, if it's been canceled, it means the game was not going in a positive direction where it would have eventually resulted in a quality game in a reasonable amount of time. They had one of their best studios on it, with another high-profile studio assisting, and possibly even more external support that we don't know about.

That vertical slice from June 2024, who knows how long it took to make that, if there was much beyond it, how much of it was legitimate/ real gameplay, what the game was behind the scenes. Cancelation might've been for the best. 🤷‍♂️

It doesn't help that they release trailers years before the game is ready for release.

How about not announcing a game or releasing a trailer until you are about 6 months from release?

One of their best studios on it ? You mean the fake studio actually comprised of 50 people ?

If this was their style of management then they would have had plenty of room to cancel dozens of games over the last decade, but they didn't.

They prefer to keep the lie for 10 years, it's a pretty efficient way to buy some time. Buy some time for what ? No idea, they just keep failing.

Or they make games more compelling for more people to be interested in.

Looks like a Mirrors Edge mod
Mirror's Edge with a decent story, combat, and sci-fi elements seems like a win. Maybe not a colossal sales success but it would be something that makes Xbox's 1st party lineup feel a bit more unique.

What's next to get axed? Fable?
It's even worse when you realize we saw MORE of an actual playable build of a Perfect Dark "demo" compared to the 53 seconds of PRE-Alpha chopped up footage of Fable (which was also announced earlier than PD)...

Ummm so they wasted the partnership with Crystal Dynamics, The Initiative is pretty much a dead studio and the vertical slice they showcased was smoke and mirrors rather than substance :messenger_downcast_sweat:

lmao.

LMFAO even.

You just had to make a sequel to an N64 game with better graphics.
But I'm guessing it was overbloated, overscoped, overwoked into a AAAA megahit

At least there's this:
