At the risk of jinxing it, I feel like I might actually be able to max all my co-ops on my first playthrough. End of September and I've already maxed four (Chariot/Lovers/Sun/Temperance), have two others at rank 9 (Death/Moon), several others at high stages and a few stragglers around rank 4/5. Stats-wise I already maxed kindess and continued doing the SL that was blocked by that and everything else is at 4 and on the way to 5/max. Pretty sure I've unlocked all that I can at this point as well, I think the only one still locked is
Empress/Haru
and AFAIK you can't do that until after
Okumura's
palace.

The most annoying one might be
Strength because I still have a bunch of Persona fusions to do, lmao

Also nice touch that
Judgment doesn't actually give any fusion bonus because it hasn't "happened" yet.

I also appreciate that the game throws out a warning when you're about to do a dialogue choice that might lead to romance.

Always going to say it's a more refined Persona experience nothing more nothing less.
And let's be honest that's already quite the achievement.
That said most will judge P5 more by its main story than its gameplay judging by how P3 vs P4 is viewed. So keep in mind that this aspect is just impossible to predict on how strongly P5 will resonate with different people.

At the end of the day buying into hyperbole and letting your imagination run wild is the perfect way to set yourself up for disappointment. In my mind P5 is a jump similar to P3 to P4G.

The main thing I come back to looking back on P5 is that it's a real ass sequel in a way we're not used to seeing anymore. With diminishing graphical returns, shrinking windows between sequels, etc, a lot of the times a sequel feels less like taking a franchise to the next level and more like a fresh paint of coat on the thing you've been doing for a while.

On a presentation level, at the very least, P5 is a huge evolution. Now I'm not saying that it's the best looking game technically but frankly, Persona 4 and 3 were kinda... busted. They were busted looking. They didn't really look good for PS2 games, or even PS2 games from Atlus (compare them to Nocturne, for instance). That didn't hold them back because of how interesting and charming they were otherwise, but...

This is the first HD Persona game, and boy howdy does it show. I don't know if, on some math nerd level you could say it looks "SUBJECTIVELY BETTER" than something like say, FF13 or Nights of Azure or whatever, but between the the overall art style, the animations, the UI... it's definitely a lot more fun to look at.

I enjoyed the gameplay changes/additions too, but they feel a bit more in line with what you'd expect from a sequel. Good stuff, but not quite as remarkable as going from tiny big-headed puppet people putzing around diorama-esque environments to big ass cel shaded style dynamos strutting around cinematic camera angle city.

And regarding the story... I'll just say that an opportunity was missed by it not having simultaneous English release. Will be curious to see what people think of it in February, depending on what happens in the US in November

so what is the consensus for this game for the people that have played

is it better than persona 3 and 4?

Haven't finished but so far I think this game feels much better than the previous entries: The story is far more interesting, dialogue improved a lot, the cast is pretty great and their interactions are more natural thanks to the improvement in the writing; in terms of gameplay, despite it being a turn based game like the others it feels very dynamic. Music is great as well, and the voice acting is superb... I don't think the English version can match the Japanese voice acting this time.

P5 is easily better than both. Putting aside any personal preferences in regards to story content, the writing is significantly better than prior games.

Funny you mention this because I felt the the same. Aside from commentary on issues that that specific to Japan, there's a lot of commentary that I found applicable to the US. The waning perception of the public on politicians being the most apparent.

I think Persona 5 was a solid game and compared to something like 3, is definitely a better game. That said, I found it also lacked any powerful and memorable emotional moments like 3 and 4 had. I'm pretty sure that 5 or 6 years down the line, the other 2 games will stick out in my memory more despite 5 being a more solid 'game'

I can't think of anything in P3 or P4 that comes even close to matching the scenes involving
Futaba and Soujiro. Just Futaba's stuff in general has so much more weight and impact than anything from the previous games.

There wasn't anything memorable in Persona 3 to me aside from a few scenes between Junpei and Midori, Kenji and Ken and towards the end of the game when you meet Ryouji.

The persona awakening scenes, the build-up to the climax of the first dungeon, and the (semi-late game spoilers)
entire sequence of leaving Niijima's dungeon, getting caught, catching up in time with the iterrogation, and having Akechi shoot the shit out of you
are all miles more memorable than anything in 3 and 4. The game is godly and I had so much fun with it.

For those who got to the end:

There isn't anything like p4 in regards to getting the true end is there?

Yes or No would be good enough or PM details on what to look out for when it happens

Not at the end but AFAIK
there's nothing as convoluted as P4, you just need to answer some questions the right way during a cutscene
.

You guys think this game will have a 90+ score on metacritics? (i have a bet on it with a friend)

I'd say the odds are in favor of it. Persona 4 Golden got a 93, and Persona 5 seems to be an improvement overall as far as gameplay is concerned as well as the story being seen at least on par with the others. That said, different time and different reviewers.

Easily.

A lot of talk about how incredible the first dungeon is. It's not the peak until the late game, right? How's the stuff soon after, and mid game?

I'm in the middle of dungeon 5 right now. I would say 2 and 3 are weaker than 1 but 4 is more interesting. I'm speaking strictly in story terms, btw, all the dungeons thus far have been great gameplay/design-wise.

Here's my ranking for the first five dungeons (I would rank them all but don't want to spoil the number):

2 > 1 >>> 4 > 5 >>> 3

The best thing I can say is the dungeons almost all offer something different story wise. 1, 2, and 3 are a bit similar in terms of your general goal, but after that it becomes varied in who's the target and why and the way the story plays out.

Out of the first 5 dongeons :

5>1>4 = 2>>>>3

But even the lowest so far was freaking great.

The music in all of them was "On point" , i can't stress this enough. The music is a complete win.

They all destroy any P4 dongeon with Ease.
Handcrafted design >> random

I've liked all the dungeons: With all the simple puzzles and shortcuts they sometimes feel like light Zelda dungeons. Even exploring Mementos is fun.

man I was browsing real quick and I thought this was your Persona game ranking for a minute

LOL.

It's certainly not.
5>2>3>4>1
---------------------------
Well the events of september certainly were "intresting" October looks like it'll be a crazy month for the story.

Finished it last night at 140 hours. 20 to 30 of that may have been my slow reading. I think the game does so many things exceedingly well that all of its faults, like the final fight felt out of place, can so easily be overlooked. I think the game is miles ahead of Persona 4 in most ways.

I'm right in the middle of September:

I met a kid that wears a jacket that says "NOOBS" and he is the Tower?, that's pretty bad for him I guess. Also... I suppose that I have to meet him several times so I can progress with that mission in Mementos?

The journey to Hawaii was not as memorable as the ones in the previous entries; but in the other hand the story's getting more and more interesting: It seems that Akechi just caught them warping to Palace and Morgana is some kind of monster (maybe he was part of the final boss or something?). Also the director of the school was targeted by the guy that's been orchestrating the "accidents" in Tokyo.
Very interesting stuff.

Just finished the game after 135 hours. I'll need to play it again in english to fully grasp everything.

What a ride! Except for the mementos/missions stuff, this game is awesome from start to finish.

If I ever post something in Japanese which I don't understand, please BAN me.

No story spoilers review. I didn't watch, but i just listened.

Sounds so good.

It makes so incredibly sad that the dude praises P5 menu navigation so much.
Not because P5 doesn't deserve it but more like because what the fuck has everyone been doing these past years. I fucking swear... Can't count the times where I played a JRPG where I had to navigate through 5 menus to do something while 4-6 buttons were not mapped to anything.

Also someone slap the DQ and Pokemon devs.

Pokemon menus are bad but classic DQ menus are way easier to use than P5. Weapon and Medicine Shop menus being the way they are are annoying as hell.

Definitely a 9 or 10 out of 10 if you need a score.

P4 have a better cast as a whole, but P5 have Futaba.
P3 and P4 have better OST, but P5 have "Rivers in the desert".

In all other matters (Story, UI, Coops, Dungeons), IMO Persona 5 is better.

Haven't finished it yet but so far I don't agree with this. Futaba is probably the most P4 character I've seen in P5 and therefore she's the most annoying character in the game (since P4 cast is the most annoying cast in the entire series).

I don't think I agree with this. I'm mostly judging by the DQ8 3ds remake cause that's the freshest in my memory. DQ lacks many little things like allowing you to reorder your skills so you can bind stuff in a way with skills/items that you use the most. Especially annoying when you have buff rotations involving actual items.
It also doesn't feel as responsive. I don't even want to start on the sin that is the bag inventory and stock buying limitations. Makes trying to make money with alchemy so annoying. Really about the smartest thing they do is ordering skills in a list grid style instead of a pure list which cuts down on navigation a bit.
And I guess menus being super minimalistic has its own appeal as well but overall navigation is far from good.

Hail, peons, for I have come as ambassador from the great and bountiful Blueberry Butt Explosion
Finally finished the game over the weekend. 152 hours. Absolutely adore the game.

I like P3 and found P4 really annoying and going too far away from what makes SMT a great franchise (tonally, mostly).

P5 not only tonally and mechanically feels like what Persona should be, the game gets straight up SMT in a way I didn't expect.

Love the cast, love the gameplay, and the last boss theme is stellar.

Right now, P5 is my GOTY, and I say this as someone who strongly disliked a lot of P4.

Straight up 10/10.

Definitely a 9 or 10 out of 10 if you need a score.

P4 have a better cast as a whole, but P5 have Futaba.

In all other matters (Story, UI, Coops, Dungeons), IMO Persona 5 is better.

I felt the opposite. I hated P4 because of the cast and because of the tone (felt way too tropey anime and lighthearted at parts). I like Futaba, but P5's cast outstrips P4's totally.

I liked P5's return to a darker story. P4 was way too Scooby Doo detective friends.

Core UI is the same in DQ8 but it's a little more busy because of various additions like more skills, crafting etc. However, it's still pretty simple. Most options are no more than 2 presses deep and usually arranged in the place that makes a lot of sense. Yeah, there's no ability to reorganize skills as you see fit it's automatically grouped by type. Inventory limitations is on purpose so that you don't get access to everything in battle.

Some of those complaints extend to Persona 5 though. You can't reorder skills after you learn them, you can't sort items in the way you want it making it extremely annoying to go through a big list of them looking for the one you want, there are inconsistencies with how some equipment is shown in shop menus, several menus are located in confusing places until you get used to it, etc. There are a ton of problems when you start looking at it.

Then there's the audio-visual component. It's stylish as hell but a bunch of the menus aren't friendly to everyone, particularly the weapon & medicine shop menus which have a ton of colors and movement going on screen when you transition between menus. There's that obnoxious sound when going back in menus too...

Don't get me wrong, I like P5's menus but it's not a paragon of design and what not. There are lots of problems with it just like any other UI.

You mean just after you learn a new skill? Because you can rearrange them in the Persona menu with Square IIRC unless you're referring to something else. No way to rearrange them in battle though.

Also I'm not a fan of the running animation the MC does in this game after battles, the animation is kinda slow. Probably was there to mask loading times in the PS3 version but in the PS4 version it's pretty quick in Mementos and Boss battles where there isn't an animation so it seems like an oversight they didn't add a button skip it.

Well, what do you know. I didn't know you could do it in the Persona status screen. I always just used that to look at the skills did and didn't realize you could reorder them. lol But not being able to rearrange them after learning a new one would be nice too. =P

Yeah, I would recommend not watching the visuals. He puts a couple things in there that are questionable. I suppose without context is fine, but it's surprising he included them...

Yeah, I'm kinda shocked he puts "no story spoilers" in the title, while I suppose there aren't technically any spoilers explicitly said, there are some big things there.
Doubt it'll stay online for long though with Atlus around anyway.

Man, there's something weirdly refreshing about grounded criticism towards the game's U.I.

Like it somehow makes P5 feel more... "real?" Idk, lol.
