Fools are always so certain of themselves, but wiser men so full of doubts.
A couple of questions that I hope someone can help with (apologies if some of this stuff has been covered in the thread -- frankly I'm trying to come in here as sparingly as possible)

- As soon as I beat the 2nd dungeon boss I realized I had kind of screwed myself in terms of grinding. I've got over a week until the deadline but I've gone as far as I can in Mementos at this point, not to mention the enemies in there right now are weak and kind of a waste of time to fight against since they give such little experience. Is there anything I can do to gain some levels until the next dungeon opens up or did I paint myself into a corner?

- Speaking of grinding, what do you guys do? Just go back through a palace a few times or something? I planned on using the Mementos for grinding but didn't expect them to be gated the way that they apparently are

- Is there a shop that sells revival items? I can't remember if I came across one or not, but it's taking longer than I expected to learn a revive ability of my own

- I really appreciate the ability to see, via the rail map, whether or not hanging out with a confidant will increase the rank or not (R1, R1, Square for those who haven't found it). But is it worth it to hang out with a confidant even when it won't rank up? Is it essential to leveling them up?

- Running through the latest section of mementos fighting everything is the best way to grind. The experience may seem paltry but it adds up.

- Takemi will sell revival items but you need to rank up her confidant.

- Each confidant has abilities tied to their rank. Even if they aren't ready to rank up, you still need to hang out with them so that the next one or two times you do hang out with them they will rank up. It all depends on what abilities you think are important/want.

- At rank 10 for your party members, their personas will transform, becoming better and getting a special skill.

What do you mean? Are you referring to
his arguments against the morality of changing a person's personality? Because, really, what the Phantom Thieves are doing is immoral in that regard, and it would be considered a crime. They don't have a choice,
and what they're doing is ultimately for the greater good, but it's still not devoid of moral ambiguity.

I would say its not immoral really. These crooks would be interrogated and tortured depending on where they live in the world anyway.

What the heroes are doing is unlawful, which doesn't equal morality. Where it gets grey is where a person gets their personality shifted, "is the person being brainwashed against their will?" They are fighting the heroes in the metaworld so they aren't helpless. The heroes give them a choice, they aren't casting a spell on the person where they have absolutely no defense. They have the choice to be killed and shut down or go through the "personality shift" which is really accepting the wrong they are doing and correcting the cognative dissonance that corrupted them. The two choices "suck", but they did NOT have their freewill stripped from them, which is where it would be morally wrong.

Emperor rank 5 spoilers

HOWLING at MC's Passion of the Christ posing for Yusuke OMG. Yusuke's link has been pretty hilarious so far

Actually sounds rather good seems similar to what I had. I believe I maxed out all but empress and tower before the start of december. Only slightly worrying is 4 stats not being at 5. I don't really remember where my stats where at that point. I only know that courage was my last stat to max out.

Yeah it should be fine...

Especially because I'm not trying to max them all. I have like, 4-5 I really want. The rest is extra.

That horrifying moment when you realize Ryuji is a Naruto clone on your squad with nothing redeeming like Kurama Chakra or Talk No Jutsu to even keep him on there.

Time to dump the guy and hardly bother with his ranking up till NG+.

Yusuke is gonna be my main man now.

Wrapped up Palace 4 last night. Ann is still the MVP simply due to having Tarunda and Dormina.

I'm liking Futaba more than I expected to--having gone in mostly blind I didn't expect the family unit dynamic between Sojiro, Protag and her. It also makes me wish they didn't bother with a romance option for her. The thought of it is just weird.

Is there much use for the random treasure from palaces (crafting?) or is that basically just vendor junk that is safe to sell?

Phantom Thief concept spoilers:
By stealing a target's treasure, the Phantom Thieves forcefully change a target's personality, whether they want to or not. Those they go after are despicable, and only presented with the threat of being killed off do the Shadows reluctantly agree to being admonished by them. But the thing here is that, even if the Shadow didn't care about changing their personality after being beaten, the real life person's personality will still be shifted if their treasure (the object of their desires) is stolen.

Not to mention the fact that a Shadow doesn't actually give an accurate representation of a person, but them in their most despicable, warped form. Real life counterparts have a level of nuance and good that the Shadows don't convey. Whatever the case is, the Phantom Thieves are changing the personalities of these people without their consent. That is immoral, and it is the ambiguity that the director of the game has repeatedly stated, in interviews, he wanted to convey.

Can anyone help? Question about a hangout on 7/17:
When Ann invites you to the movies, which theater do you go to? Shibuya or Shinjuku?

Makoto's awakening was so satisfying to watch!

I don't understand
Akechi's
logic, just met him and I'm in July, for arguments sake at the basic level it sounds like he complains that
you aren't playing by the established rules, regardless of them being corrupt and he doesn't like it!
Really weak, sounds basically like he's saying fall in line. I guess the problem is that the game is trying to make you an anti-hero, but the enemies are so damned terrible in comparison that any attempt to self-reflect on your role in the game fails.

(Spoilers up to July)
Akechi's logic is perfectly sound to me. I mean the game discusses this directly when they target Madarame, who isn't that terrible until he confesses that let Yusuke's mother die to claim the Sayuri. But even beyond that they're tinkering with someone's heart and Akechi's point that noone can prove that it wasn't the phantom thieves who made them their commit their crimes in the first place is also valid, at least from an outsider's perspective.

I already have this ability and tried it multiple times in the palaces. I can barely collect 100k from one day while fighting almost every enemy in the palace. Some people here said they managed to collect +500k from mementos in one go. How do they even do that? or is it easier to collect money at mementos than in palaces?

What worked for me was the high pixies around the beginning of dungeon 3. They're weak to gun/frei and give you quite a bit of money on each attempt. I think in one encounter with them I was able to extort over 50k before I was finally forced to end the fight. Most of the times I get 5-10k per fight. I just ask for money over and over until it eventually starts off red in negotiations, then I recruit/ask for items from some other persona until I can go back to spamming money demands. I went into the 3rd palace with around 30k, had almost 400k by the time I reached the treasure which was in one trip (and included spending a decent amount on fusion).

XP scales based on level. If they are low enough for that skill to work then you probably aren't getting XP worth a damn for fighting them anyway. The game is doing you a favor.

It's not doing me a favour by punishing me for grinding levels early and forcing me to lose an advantage if I want to fight. I'm just losing the choice of going into combat because I'm overleveled.

He makes a point a little bit later regarding the thieves

He seems to believe that the Phantom thieves are also behind the incidences of the public going berserk/crazy, because they're both related to wild shifts in personality with no known connection. He thinks that the Phantoms are using their calling-cards and obvious victims to cover up their real objective, which is disrupting public order for their own mysterious ends. I'm not far into August so I don't know where it will go from here but that's my takeaway on his views. There's also a fairly good point that he makes that even if these people are bad, forcing mental/personality shifts onto them is still immoral.

You can still fight them, just not with the back attack advantage. You probably wouldn't need that anyway? Since you should kill them pretty fast.

I feel like I accidentally levelled too much due to completing the Twin's quests, only 22 but now I basically can't level up without getting into a ridiculous amount of fights even in Block 3 (4?) of Mementos.

Ugh fucking Ryuji

Spoilers on 6/13
He is truly the weakest link of the team and is so stupid and loud. He drags them down more than help so far at this point.

Right in front of Makoto, thanks dumbass.

Have you finished the second palace yet? If yes
You can encounter treasure demons like the one of the museum in Mementos. There's also an item to make them spawn more frequently that you can craft.
There are various treasure demons the late game ones naturally give more money.

To piggy back on this, starting in dungeon 4 you can combine the money reading from the fortune teller with the tool to make more treasure demons appear. The money reading costs 5k but doubles the amount of money you make when finishing a battle with an all out attack. I'm maybe half way through the 4th dungeon now, have encountered 4 of the treasure demons there already after using the tool. Recruited the first one for my compendium, have gotten 24k per encounter for killing the other 3, money reading is definitely wroth it :) They cost less than 12k to summon from the compendium (with the 10% discount from having >25% filled), so killing is always better than recruiting.

Yusuke is gonna be my main man now.

You. I like you.

I did the same. I heard a lot of love for Ryuji in this thread when I first started the game with everyone else. But over time, I just liked him less and less.

Yusuke is awesome. Morgana is my main healer, he's technically my right hand man, but since he's a cat, Yusuke will have to be my right hand man.

I dumped Morgana and kept Ryuji because he deals lots of damage, Yusuke is on the bench and instead of Morgana I am using
Makoto
she's cool and her spells rarely get resisted or blocked.

Oh boy. Idk I mean I like unlikable characters with good qualities but he lacks them.

Not sure why there is Yusuke hate when you have an idiotic loudmouth with bad outbursts.

Yeah, I'm not sure why people don't like Yusuke. I don't particularly like him, but he's pretty inoffensive.

Yeah, I kinda feel like she's the Nanako of this game. What with the dead mother and hanging out downstairs.

Rank up your Death confident for revival items. You can also buy SP accessories from her which will enable you to stay in a Palace or Mementos run indefinitely. You need to get her to rank 7 so they become affordable though.

People called Romanes they go the house?
So, quick question on Velvet Room Mechanics....not really a spoiler, but I'll tag it anyways.

For lockdown, is it a days-passed basis for learning new skills similar to the daycare in pokemon, or is it based on the # of fights/xp you get in between leaving them locked up?

The game doesn't seem to specifically say, and I'm wondering how often I should start checking back in....

While it's possible you're over-leveled, one thing to consider is the Moon confidant - while some of the boosts are to inactive party members, I believe some apply to the whole party's xp gain.

...

I liked Ryuji a lot in April, more than Yosuke at least. He, however, has not grown at all to where I'm at in the game a couple months later and is really only an annoyance now. Everyone else on the team has had some real skin in the game and grown from it (as is the Persona series' specialty) yet Skull has not followed suit at all. Hoping it gets better.

It's more like
number of free-choice event days has passed by, and it's shortened by the arcana rank

Well,
not completely okay. He starts off by saying he doesn't want it, after all, but leaves it open.

Romancing Futaba would seem extremely weird to me. Way more of a brother/sister relationship than whatever a romance with her looks like.

In the end it doesn't matter if you have him in the fighting team or not though, as he will get his lines either way...

I found that having Morgana as a heal-container-backup is perfect, he can heal my fighting party with his SP out of combat.

I heard from some posts earlier that Ryuji gets better. But I have my doubts. He just seems like a typical anime character that annoys me. I didn't like Yusuke and other characters as much as Ryuji either, but over time, they all got better and I enjoyed spending time with them. Ryuji is the weakest link in the group by a wide margin.

I dislike him even more in September.

I feel like I am one of the only people in here that is planning on doing two playthroughs of the game, the first one just to build up my social stats and maybe a little bit of dates and what not, but then the second one to actually go through all of the social links.

I was getting a little down about a perceived lack of freedom in this game, until I realised it's much more of a highly interactive visual novel than a standard open RPG. This might seem obvious to series fans, but my expectations were in a different place as I'd never played one of these games before.

Now I'm enjoying it a lot more. I sometimes forget these things can simply be a matter of perception.
