Hashino's interview raised my hype even further if that was even possible. I love the themes he's tackling with this game and the idea of the protagonists being a mischievous bunch that play by their own rules is really appealing.
If there really are only 4 characters it's a bit of a letdown but it could also allow them to take certain aspects of the game to another level.
For example, integrating the social aspect into the main story instead of having it inside a bubble. This would be difficult to pull off with a large cast but with only 4 characters they could have our interactions with the other party members affect the way scenes from the main story play out. Destroy that notion of "OK, now I'm inside a s-link and whatever happens in here wont matter outside of it". It needs to be naturally integrated into the relations between the characters throughout the rest of the game. This would be a crazy endeavour with a big cast but if they do go with a smaller party I could see them tackle something along these lines.
In Tales of Xillia 2 there were also S-link style sub-stories and they'd unlock bonus cutscenes in the main story for their respective characters. I'm thinking of something like that, but more ambitious, with a bigger impact on the way things play out.
If the girl they introduced today is the only female party member, they could focus on really building her relationship with the MC as part of the main story without making it awkward because you maxed a s-link with her best friend.
I dunno, I definitely think that they wouldn't do it if it wasn't to enhance other aspects of the game, a trade-off if you will.
Regardless, I'm sure that complaints people have about the s-link system will be addressed and going with a smaller party might be a part of it.
Lol at the title change.
