Persona Community Thread |OT8| Coming Winter 2014

Just finished PS2 P4 a couple weeks ago for the first time and is probably my new favorite game. Loved everything about it and is probably the only game to actually make me teary eyed. Playing Arena right now and have PQ and Golden on the way.

I like OG Chie opposed to P4Ani Chie because everytime P4Ani Chie speaks all I hear is goddamn Quark from VLR. However, Chie in Arena is waaaaaaaaaaaaay better than P4Ani Chie.

And I don't see why the changed the title to P4A when the title card in the intro still says "the Ultimate in Mayonaka Arena"

I am addicted to this universe.

A lot of people were thinking that the 7 deadly sins in Persona 5 would represent dungeons, but am I really in the minority thinking it's actually about the protagonists?

1. P5MC is Wrath. His composure when
taken over by Arsene
reflects this, his eyes in the game's opening are red (the color of wrath) and he's associated with blood (his footsteps generate blood and he's been seen bleeding from his eyes in cutscenes). His is the most obvious because we've seen the most of him, so the others are uncertain.

2. Anne/Anzu could be Envy if just going by the colors, since her eyes in the opening are green and there's her green four-leaf clover (the color of Envy). Plus, the weapon she uses is a whip, a weapon which symbolizes aggressive feelings, abusiveness and hatred/disdain for others.

3. Ryuji could be Greed. His eyes aren't normally yellow (they appear to be light brown or a really, really dark shade of yellow/orange), but when
he seems to be taken over by something (presumably his Persona),
his eyes become bright yellow, and that's also their color in the opening. There's also his "ZOMG" shirt and his thief gloves.

4. I was thinking Morgana could be exempt but, if not, her eyes are light blue, which is the color of Sloth. Plus, she's a cat, which perfectly fits that archetype.

5. PV02 spoilers:
"Never Never Give In" man has violet hair and eyes,
which represents Pride.
Plus, just look at him here; the dude is full of it. Not to mention his fleur-de-lis symbol, an insignia which blatantly refers to royalty and pride.

That's how I've always seen it, anyways, but I feel like most people just think it refers to dungeons, which I think is absolutely wrong. If it's characters, that would mean Gluttony and Lust would be the remaining ones, and could likely be tied to important characters as well.

Did the thought switch over? I remember when PV1 was out most people assumed that it represented the characters. It could also represent both though. Like the
casino looking dungeon/area
could easily represent greed. But since that is really the only area we kinda got a good luck at, we don't have another to see if there is a pattern.

This would seem to make a lot of sense to me. In P4, we had dungeons basically for each character, so it wouldn't be a stretch to expect each dungeon to have both character and sin tied in within P5.

4. I was thinking Morgana could be exempt but, if not, her eyes are light blue, which is the color of Sloth. Plus, she's a cat, which perfectly fits that archetype.

I agree that the 7 deadly sins probably relate to the protagonists, but Morgana has always kinda stuck out to me. In the clips that seem to feature her from the opening (like when she changes from cat to cartoon cat-thief) her eyes are red. They're light blue every other time, but when they should be symbolic in some way like the other characters, they're red. Wonder what's up with that.

I think if anything, Morgana will be related to the deadly sins more than anyone else, considering that she's in the part of the trailer where they show up.

I find it interesting that the deadly sins thing seems to be a major point of speculation for Persona 5 considering that it was a fairly minor aspect of the first trailer. It's not something that's been touched on in any of the interviews, or really overly relevant to a lot of the inspirations that have been mentioned for the game. I feel like it will be relevant to Morgana in some way, but beyond that, to the point of being the theming for the dungeons or characters, I feel like they'd have made a bigger deal out of it if it was going to be that important.

Like Cannon_Fodder says, this is the exact reason Morgana could be exempt from being attributed to any one particular sin, while the corresponding ones are evident for the other characters.

The English cast of P3 also didn't change heavily right?

Fuuka and Ken did. Fuuka's i liked the change, she's less bland now. And Ken, I just can't look at him the same in PQ. Voiced by Cindy Robinson, and it's way too jarring considering how much i liked Labrys and hearing her voice come out of Ken

After buying it at launch, I finally started Persona PSP a few days ago, and just finished it last night. I had bought it just because I like Persona, but didn't want to start it because I never felt like playing a first person dungeon crawler. In fact, PQ is a part of the reason I went back to it, because that was the first game I played with first person dungeon crawling that I really loved, which in turn made me re-evaluate a couple games I had passed over before. Anyway, I wrote up my thoughts on the first game, in case anyone is curious.

The Good
  • The world was really fascinating to me, especially once the game opens up. The Harem Queen in particular stuck out to me.
  • I liked all of the characters in my party (Main, Nanjo, Masao, Elly, and Maki), though I only started to like Maki right near the end.
  • It was far from perfect, but the battle system was really interesting, and I liked it quite a bit. Stuff like each attack having different ranges and areas of effect was cool.
  • Party persona management was probably one of my favourite parts. The compatability from the old games was always a good way to let everyone use multiple personas without it getting broken/overly complicated.

The Bad
  • I have no idea why they felt the need to add as many different elements and types as they did. I liked that there was more than just the four elements, and that light and dark had more than just insta-kill, but it got excessive.
  • Stuff like animation skip and auto-battle really helped, but the game has a lot of little waits scattered all over that can get a little annoying sometimes.
  • The game got a bit too obtuse at times, specifically party recruitment right at the start. There's no indication (that I caught) that letting Brown into your party will stop anyone else from joining. The only reason I knew to say no if I wanted Elly, say, was having other people talk about their experiences.

The Rest
  • I only played through to one ending, but it's pretty obvious that there's a ton of stuff to do in this game that I never even started.
  • Nanjo's dickishness is almost inspirational. Still liked him though.

All in all I had a ton of fun with it. Now I'm starting Innocent Sin for the third time, and hopefully I have the patience to actually see it through to the end.

The only reason I think the sins will be used as the basis for the dungeons is mostly that it follows the same structure as P3 and P4, with a handful of themed dungeons gradually taken over the course of the year. The only proof I have is that the casino dungeon seems a pretty good fit for a Greed level.

Also, real talk, I would love to see a PQ styled remake of SMT If or a whole new game about the Shadow Operatives.

You.... I like you, Weiss. Lets be friends.

I think it could work. If... is basically Persona Zero anyway. Give you access to all four party members at once and tweak the Guardian system into what was used in Q.

Plus it would validate my headcanon that everything in that game was set in the Personaverse.

Just not Q's art style. This is If:

They changed from being voiced by Microsoft Word and a Red Macaw to being voiced by actual human beings.

KEI NANJO DA GOD SON.

Nanjo also has the best Ultimate Persona in the franchise: His butler who raised him riding on a fucking awesome surfboard.

I just want another PQ with the balance changes it needs, non-canon to include even more Persona characters (Labrys and FeMC), and everyone to be fully fleshed out and it to be set after the latest persona games (I really wish PQ was set after
Aigis gains Athena and her human-like personality
). I absolutely love the combat though

Hearing Labrys' voice come out of Ken's mouth still makes me dislike Ken in PQ. I'd prefer his normal voice, which i already liked

Damn hit a huge wall with
Shadow Mitsuo / Mitsuo the Hero
in P4G.

Around Lvl 37

Welcome to arguably one of the hardest story fights in Persona 4.

There are three phases to this fight

  1. The first phase is the shell, Mitsuo the Hero. You'll start in this phase and you'll likely enter it at least once more. The first time around it only has two abilities. One will do moderate almighty damage to a party member, the other will inflict Exhaustion status which will sap the target's SP and cause them to take more damage. Make sure to remove this immediately as this is a fight of attrition and you need to keep all the SP you can get for the burn phase. The second time and beyond you can also get hit by Gigadyne, which does almighty damage to the entire party. Be prepared to cast defensive increasing abilities at this point.
  2. The second phase occurs after Mitsuo the Hero has been beaten. He'll use an elemental wall spell. Take note of which wall he uses. Whatever element he protects himself with is what he's going to use on the party next, usually for two turns. Ideally, make everyone defend if you can afford to do so, but absolutely make sure anyone weak to it defends. If he gets a second turn through weaknesses, he will almost always follow it up with Megidola. At which point you will probably die. Also make sure to keep an eye out for the fear status effect, as he can use Ghastly Wail, which will instantly kill anyone inflicted with fear.
  3. The third phase begins when he starts reforming outer shell. This is where you want to go all out as much as possible. Offensive buffs, power/mind charge if you have it. Do as much damage as possible in an attempt to destroy the shell. Should you succeed, you'll be given a free all out attack against Shadow Mitsuo himself for massive damage and will return to the second phase of the fight. Should you fail, he'll reform Mitsuo the Hero and delay the end of the battle. Because Shadow Mitsuo gets two turns, it is entirely possible to get a string of unluckiness where he can build it back up before you can out damage him.

Some other tips:
Teddie and Yukiko are both godsends for this fight, as they can cure the two status effects that can appear during it. Who you chose for your third slot is up to you, but I liked using Kanji myself.

Also, as much as I hate to admit it.... this is one of the very few spots in Persona 3 or Persona 4 where grinding CAN help you. Lots of people will grind the Persona
Black Frost to level 43 because it learns Mind Charge, Fire Amp and Agidyne, which makes dealing with the last phase of the fight much easier as you are guaranteed to get it down.

I just noticed that P3 Movie 2 is on Netflix. There goes my sleeping time...

What the hell? It actually is! They never had the first one on there, so that's doubly weird. I know what I'm watching tonight!

First time seeing the movies, but the animation is pretty great in the fight scenes.

I absolutely love the fight scenes in the movies, especially
the end of the Emperor and Empress fight because of Makoto's final Persona summon, and the fight with Chariot and Justice because of Aigis

Oh God what if they only show PV02 at TGS.

You know, I was joking when I wrote this, but I'm starting to think it might actually be the case. It still hasn't been officially released to the public, so we weren't supposed to see any of the story tidbits that were shown.

I'd be totally willing to bet you that this will not happen. Again, Atlus Japan are likelier to show nothing than to do that.

I would think most likely we'll see something at the Sony pre-TGS event, like we did last year. Nobody realistically expected that teaser and yet we got it.
