I liked Yukiko better than Rise and I didn't really care for Yukiko.

Naoto is best girl forever.
As far the character's personality goes, Rise would be top and and naoto second.
If we're talking about the main cast of Persona 4 Golden (Canon), I'd rate the quality as such:

  1. Kanji
  2. Rise
  3. Naoto
  4. Yukiko
  5. Chie
  6. Marie
  7. Yosuke
  8. Teddie

Similarly, if I was making a rating regarding the quality of the cast in Persona 3, then it'd look like so:

  1. Mitsuru
  2. Aigis
  3. Junpei
  4. Shinjiro
  5. Yukari
  6. Fuuka
  7. Akihiko
  8. Koromaru
  9. Ken

For me, based on social link information:
  1. Naoto
  2. Chie
  3. Kanji
  4. Teddie
  5. Yosuke
  6. Rise
  7. Yukiko

Which old ground are we speaking of?

Mainly the 'oh there's two mes rise and risette who am I oooOooOoOoOO have to make a decision'

fair enough, like, yeah, it's something performers especially are going to grapple with throughout their life and there's no easy simple answer. And yeah, i've always viewed shadows as accepting you have the problem and s-links as trying to deal with the problem. But it's very... samey for Rise.

That's not all she is. Everyone else can be reduced to a single issue but Rise and Kanji.
In Rise's case she's struggling to form an identity of her own. She has her old life in Inaba, she has her Idol self that they market her with, and then there's the present her that is trapped in between it all. That's the main issue we're presented with in the story.

However, in her social link, we see her do her best to move away from the idol life that confused her originally, blaming it for her self-identity problems and ensuing choices, going as far as shunning her Manager and Kanamin because she wants to get away from everything to do with the "old her". However, in the process of losing all of what her old life brought her, she realizes that nobody really needs to stick to any single idea of self and cut out everything else. She moves on from her self-concocted issues and grows as a character.

It's a great mix of a coming-of-age story mixed with an idol coming to terms with who they are.

TL;DR: Rise is one of the two most complex characters in Persona 4, and she doesn't get enough credit.

If everyone's rating writing quality.....

1. Kanji
2. Naoto
3. Rise
4. Yukiko
5. Teddie
6. Chie
7. Yosuke
8. Marie

Yosuke and Marie are the only ones I seriously question, I thought everyone else was very well done.

yaaay lists

for P3 since there's enough P4 lists anyway

1. Aigis
2. Junpei
3. Yukari
4. Fuuka
5. Shinjiro
6. Akihiko
7. Mitsuru (her terribad s-link ...)
8. Koromaru
9. Ken

I don't even what yosukes social link was but I hear its pretty average.

Also yukiko is the worst.

Edit: Dojima is the best character and whats with all the teddie hate?

I thought Teddie was great in the original. It wasn't until the spinoffs (and Golden, sort of) that they completely ruined him. Same with Akihiko, he's at least top 5 in P3 but rock bottom in Arena and Q.

I mean that's still a single issue, it's just Rise's more complex take on it.

I don't disagree.

The acceptance that your mask is in fact a part of you ties pretty well into Persona's overall themes as a whole, I think. As opposed to a straight rejection.

I'm only midway through P3, but Junpei's kinda turned to shit now that Chidori's around, imo. I just don't feel that whole thing's at all believable (in a sense that anyone would ever talk like that) and that it makes Junpei look desperate in a loser way. Not the lovable loser way, just the flat out loser way.

EDIT: FUCKKKKKK I missed an Elizabeth request and don't have a backup save and it's past the deadline. Shit. God dammit. Is there any point to completing all of them anyways, at least on a first playthrough?

Choosing teams? It's Splatfest all over again.

As much as I hate to part with my Chiaki avatar, count me in for #InHardinWeTrust.

That being said, if the game really got pushed to 2016, a #HardinLied victim avatar seems pretty appropriate as well.

I typically just lurk in this thread but I see the uncertainty has finally driven some of you to this end.

Personally, I believe P5 will make it out before 2016. Atlus/Hardin's constant reassurance of 2015 is comforting, but that may just be the denial speaking. Every week that passes with nothing weighs heavily on that hope. So I must say #InHardinWeTrust.

Agreed, Dojima is great, and the top 3 for me in P4 would have to be Kanji, Rise, and Naoto.

The thing I didn't like about P4 is the fact you HAVE to do the social links in order to find out why characters are the way they are. Dojima, for example, just comes off as a dad that doesn't really give a crap about his child, but doing his social link you see why his character is the way he is.

And I HATED Nanako. Every night it's "Welcome home, big bro!" and it got annying after a while.
Then her death and no one being home for the last month and that fucking happy yet sad music they played. I actually missed Nanako. Probably the only time I've ever started tearing up while playing a video game.

Aaaaaaaaaand since we're ranking our favorites:

1.) Naoto
2.) Kanji
3.) Chie
4.) Brosuke
5.) Yukiko
6.) Rise
7.) Teddie

Lastly, do they have a figure of Yukari using her Evoker as she does in the game?

I'm about to finish P3P and just found out that the movies weren't dubbed. Man ain't it hard to get people to try Persona. -_-

I have no reason to not believe the 2015 date until a delay is announced or until 2015 passes by.

Not even joking, Persona is what got me into japanese media. I was pretty close to your typical "dudebro" beforehand

Naoto and Mitsuru are goddess tier both in their respective games and in spinoffs like Persona 4 U2, Persona Q, and Persona 4 Dancing.

Aegis is like a pinch under them.

Like why even try to beat Mitsuru and Naoto.

Also Naoto should cameo in Persona 5 because she is da best and she fits with the whole Lupin III, thief, detective shit they have going on.

Naoto in her 20s working as a detective in Shibuya? (● ´ ε `。●)

Naoto would be a better character if her part of the main investigation wasn't horrendously boring and just WORDS WORDS WORDS.

Naoto's lines were basically the game going, "the player know these stuff already. Let's just assume they are dumb enough not to notice it and repeat/summarize the entire thing for them once again!"

I'm kidding. Aigis is still my favorite though

The worst thing about Naoto is that she joins super late in the story, she never really fits in or gets much non-story exposition, maybe this is different in P4G though.

1) Yosuke
2) [Empty space because nobody becomes close to Yosuke]
3) Naoto
4) Kanji
4) Rise
--------
1) Junpei
2) Akihiko
3) Yukari
4) Fuuka

Plus, she spoils the ragtag detective squad atmosphere they were going prior to her joining.

It's not like she's that good anyway lol, how did she not figure the whole case out? Always seemed odd to me.

Don't question my loyalty when I own this, I don't even own any Mitsuru/Naoto stuff except for like a keitai strap cause there aren't any good stuff for them.

Aegis would be higher is she wasn't hard as shit out of my mains to play in Persona 4 Ultimax. I find Naoto easier to play than her and no one plays her except for like 10 people cause of her higher learning curve (´;д;`)

Naoto/Mitsuru main here.

And i'm only kidding :p Even though i suck at fighters, i like Aigis' playstyle in P4AU the most

I actually really like this as a part of the game. Persona 4 is all about choosing to pursue the truth. More than once throughout the game the player is offered the choice to just accept what's presented or question it. The social links reflect that theme; so you can either accept that Dojima is a terrible Dad, or choose to look for the truth and get a fairer view of him as a character. It's a great way to make the player actively learn the message of the story I think.

Also, my ranking is:
Yosuke
Rise
Kanji
Teddie
Naoto
Marie
Chie
Yukiko

But I love them all. Yukiko is still great, she's just the least great.

My first time through P4 I was like "Aw yeah 11th hour character and zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz"

Subsequent playthroughs, though, I kinda feel like it's endearing. Like, in the same way that Blathers' tendency to ramble is sort of adorable in Animal Crossing.

I mean that's part of Persona isn't it? In order to get to know people you gotta invest the time it turns out.

Welcome Home big bro!

Welcome Home big bro!

Unless those people are Jun.

And then, by God, whether you'd be SLinking with Lisa, jamming with Eikichi or desperately failing to steal Maya away from your infinitely more impressive older brother you WILL listen to Jun and his problems and EVERYONE WILL REMIND YOU ABOUT IT.

I never see this opinion for some reason, but I agree. That whole subplot is wretched.

Even if I haven't finished the game yet, so far my ranking would be

1) Kanji
2) Rise
3) Naoto
4) Chie
5) Teddie
6) Yosuke
7) Yukiko

haha so the the "only thing" you didn't like about Persona 4 was the the central gameplay mechanic?

Persona 3

1. Aigis
2. Akihiko
3. Shinjiro
4. Yukari
5. Mitsuru
6. Fuuka
7. Koromari
8. Junpeo
9. Ken

1. Naoto

3. Yukiko
4. Rise
5. Kanji
6. Chie
7. Teddie

I think what they mean is that the Social Link doesn't have a lot of effect outside of the link itself, which is a common complaint.

Fair enough. I'd like to see s-links influence the story more in P5. I feel confident they will too, since they kinda started going that route in Golden with how
getting Adachi to rank 6 in time would give you the potential for a new bad ending, and finishing Marie's link added a new dungeon and ending

See, I kinda liked how the P4 crew in-story were just a gaggle of friends tracking down the villain, while their character growth was left in optional conversations you had to actively seek out. Apart from powering up your Personae, it made character development for your party members an active reward.

To be honest I'd like it if the social links were ingrained better in the main story but I never really like that you have to do them to unlock actual content, like with Marie.

It actually reminds me of games like Mass Effect or Fallout where I had to change my playstyle just so I could prioritize the Charisma perks because I didn't want to miss out on any the ability of making the decisions that I actually want to make.

The most feasible way of weaving the S-links through the story would be to have some small callbacks to a S-link here in there.
For example: You're talking with the gang during the main story and if you've ranked up Ryuji to rank 3 he'll make a small joke referencing the S-link between the normal dialougue.

This way seems pretty neat and will also be feasibly possible to implement in the game.

Anyhow, we don't even know how S-links are going to work in P5, I'm sure they'll improve it a bit as the "S-links Vs Main Story" complaint is pretty common.
