PES 2018 Demo Impression

We see this in real life though

FIFAs problem is you get no space ever, constant pressing by the AI

Theres no midfield either, and every AI team plays the exact same way

Offline it isnt even close
Yep. I love how big the pitch can be against some teams and players yet how small it can be against others in PES. That alone makes it better than Fifa for me. Far closer to real football.

Can PES 2018 PC be played offline? Furthermore, does it have region-specifc commentators? eg Arabic for arabic regions, spanish, etc.

How do you get the camera/replay to look like that?

When are the reviews up? Eagerly awaiting what the final score is for this game, the biggest drawback to last year's version was the constant need to upload option files, and you are trying to find the most comprehensive one which has, Real Madrid, Juventus and Bayern Munich...hopefully this season won't be as troublesome...

PES17 was great, but the whole topic around the licensing felt frustrating for me. I don't want to spend so much time around adding/updating squads and leagues.

On PS4? How can it be frustrating to copy files to a pen and wait for 8 minutes or so

Hold the right on d pad to play in slow motion while panning with the left analogue stick and rotating with the right at the same time. Just repeat the process a few times until you get the shot you want. :D

Exactly. I assume anyone "frustrated" by 2017's option file process wasn't playing the series in the PS2 days where the (legal) option file method was basically recreating your own pixel art from images posted on forums!

The good old days hahaha. I spent hours doing that and changing all the names. Fuck me hilarious to look back at the length I'd go to for the general. Worth every second.

I still have my X Port from back in the PS2 days. You could download custom/completed Option files for the PES games and transfer them to your PS2 memory card:

There was even a 'patched' PS2 version of PES3 that had all official kits and player + team names included on the ISO, but of course you needed a mod-chipped PS2 to play it.

Is the final game supposed to be harder than the demo? More covered spaces?

I just renamed the Prem teams.

Could only take North London and Merseyside Blue for so long.

This will be my 3rd year playing PES after 7 years of playing Fifa. I only play offline and I use full manual controls. Here are my Demo impressions.

The Good:

Some really cool new animations. I had one where Neymar tried to bring the ball down from the sky and had an imperfect touch. I feel like in previous years it's been very black or white in terms of the players touch is either perfect or terrible, this seemed to be a nice middle ground where the ball got away from him a little bit but not terribly far.

Another neat animation was on air balls where you notice the players putting their hands/arms on the opponents back.

Shielding the ball from the defender that's behind you. This is an awesome addition as it seemed way too easy to poke the ball from behind.

On defense, having an icon not only for the player your controlling but one for the player that will assist you is a great new feature. I would make a lot of mistakes at the back because I assumed the wrong player was the one assisting.

New graphics during goal kicks adds to the experience making it feel more like an actual broadcast.

Dribbling, especially the non sprint dribbling seems to be more under control.

The Bad:

Automated selection of intended pass receiver is significantly worse (only applies to manual passing).

Thru balls are both OP and utilized too often by the CPU. Defensive positioning is a big part of this problem.

Defenders still occasionally lock onto path and won't deviate even if you're controlling them.

Too much open space both for sprinted runs towards goal and when you're switching play. PES 17 defenses might have been too against allowing a switch of play where it seems like the PES 18 demo is the exact opposite.

Most of these I hope are just demo issues. I didn't try the beta, but I imagine a lot of the issues I referenced were fixed between the demo build and the beta release.

Overall Impression:

The core gameplay is still really fun and if some of the issues I mentioned in the demo are ironed out this is going to be another terrific game. The graphics and gameplay still seem to be miles ahead of FIfa so I will be picking PES again this year.

Does it?

ffs im a clown

EDIT: Does anyone know whats causing that shadowing in the replays though? Is it just an effect?
Not sure what you mean, but I did notice weird ghosting during replays in Signal Iduna, that's caused by the netting behind the goal. It's not hidden during replays so shows on the replay.

I've never ever seen floodlights cause four different shadows?

And what about the weird shadows around players in replays?
You've never watched a football game under floodlights or even played a football game before?

Shitty picture, but this is ISS 64, from 1996.

After scoring in the replays there's a noticeable shadow outline around the players, especially their legs

its like a motion blur

Lashley's having a bit of a shocker here.

PES 2018 offers a fun and accessible game experience. The handling and the behavior of the players is impeccable, but the game modes and the technical aspects of the game have not varied significantly with respect to the previous entrance of the saga.

Sounds about right. I really wasn't seeing this "huge presentation overhaul" the marketing was promoting. Gameplay is great so that's good enough for me (especially since my preorder was cheap thanks to Amazon's £42 credit for £25), but I really hope they spend some serious time on game modes and especially presentation next year.

I don't think Be a Legend has had a single improvement in about 3 years. At least Random Selection Match is back, I loved that mode back in the PS2 days.

Aye the menus are so basic

I just wanted a review on the PC port, but all the reviews are on PS4 Pro, which isn't a great sign

It's poor man's motion blur implementation, think it's even worse on console.

If your main concerns are the quality of the PC port, probably better to wait for impressions from the masses once the game comes out instead of looking at few reviews.
