PewDiePie calls someone a "fucking n****r" during PUBG livestream

He dropped the facade. He can never make another dollar and still be better off financially than almost everyone else at this point.

Just like Notch...once these assholes get the fame and $$$ their true colors show...it's quite sickening.

I just cannot believe I came back into this thread and people are *STILL* white knighting for this idiot.....

Maybe I'm just dumb and naive, it's so gross.

Man there have quite a lot of heated gaming moments in history. It almoat seems like heated gaming moments superseded gaming as some sort of totally not racist time paradox.

Where do you live? Racism will never go away so the word will never go away, that is sadly a fact. If black people stopped saying nigga, white people will still racially abuse black people by using that hard R.

Being called a nigger by a none black person is far different. If you aren't black then you don't understand the reason why, then read up on the history of nearly every country and slavery.

Black person to black person " My nigga" . There is nothing aggressive or trying to call a person subhuman.

Racist to black person "Fuck off you nigger" aggressive abusive tone and outright ttrying to call the person subhuman because of their skin.

And to add on "nigga," it is almost always used as a form of camaraderie and flat out brothership between black folks to other black folks or black folks to other similarly situated minorities.

The only black people who call other black people "niggers" are people like Sheriff David Clarke.

Its not even PewDiePie that pisses me off. What pisses me off is that my little brother is a fan of this punk ass bitch and many times I have heard him go through verbal abuse being called the n word monkey etc.. my brother is 12 years old and I get so mad that sometimes I feel liking fucking breaking the Xbox one. I don't care that I paid $500 for it. I don't want my 12 year old brother having to go through bs like that.

Yes I can't protect him from it, and the worst part is that there's very little I can do other than yelling at him to turn that bullshit off. So the people that casually use this word and casually racist online this is what 12 year olds have to go through every single day. I'm 23 years old so I don't give a crap about it but the fact that young people have to deal with this pisses me off.

That's heartbreaking. :( Fuck PDP and his ilk.

I don't think it's totally honest to cast him out as an overt, militant racist as it is to put the focus on why people of this generation and this era continue to find this word okay to use in casual conversation.

I dont think it's fair I have to accept being called a nigger and this fucking piece of trash is normalizing it. My point? Fuck being sympathetic to this shit. Like lets not.

Yep. It's basically "I know what shit you been through man".

Racism will never go away so the word will never go away, that is sadly a fact.

Austria, it's pretty save here, ever been to Vienna? It's a multicultural hub where you hear about 10 different languages when you drive in
the metro. Yes, there probably are extremists lurking around in some dark corner though, I agree -luckily I never was in contact with any.

I'd say it's worse the other way. He is blatantly racist instead of just trying to be edgy.

Like I said before, be careful with him, he is first and foremost an actor and is making money by talking literal shit. I truly hope this will backfire and he'll lose a few million subs(and some sponsors) though.

Sums it up. I have exactly one friend who calls me "Nigga" since I met him over a decade ago and he would find it weird af if I didn't call him like that as well, even though I'm not black. (he is).
Not in my wildest dreams would I think of calling anyone else the N-word though for obvious reasons and I don't see why anyone who is not racist would insist on his "right" to call other people that. People who do that or go "it's just a word", or "heated gaming moment" or even more ridiculous "in Europe it's not considered bad" need to fuck off.

Well I don't and the word isn't used where I come from at all. I haven't heard it in "real life" yet, not even from black people.

That's something I was wondering about for some time now. Using it sounds like a horrible plan to get rid of a racist word like that, it also seems to make it harder to be offended by it when you throw it around casually. Children catch up words quickly and if they sound "cool" they will use them. Now if the child happens to be white then it is suddenly racist without even knowing it.

Well it's not like you guys can change it now as it really seems to be a word black people use a lot(from what I've heard from black streamers at least).
Black people use the word out of a shared camaraderie that comes from all being persecuted together. When black people use the N word, they are acknowledging that shared struggle that they face every day. When a white person uses the N word, since they don't share in the persecution that black people face, it can only possess the racist meaning. Context changes the meaning dramatically.

And kids are not dumb. They pick up on context just fine. They have to, since all language depends on context to derive meaning. Wringing your hands about children picking up the N word from black people's use of it is either silly or disingenuous.

People who say Nigger arent cool with black people

- A black person

No, see, I'm white but I have so many black friends who assure me it's cool to say!

This isn't hard: if that word comes out of your mouth, you better have an excellent explanation or a hell of an apology. Without one of those, I'm going to go ahead and assume racist. Hell, even with one of those, if you keep doing it I'll assume racist.

Also, people need to stop thinking that every racist is going to be wearing a bed sheet and burning crosses. Plenty of them just look like your neighbor.

You also got blackface shit there man. Austria isn't all good.

Every country has racist problems, some just don't see it.

Sorry this is such a long post. I hope I didn't miss anyone's replies because I think everyone has a valid opinion on the matter. I knew my original post would generate a lot of discussion and I hope that's not altogether a bad thing.

To use the word casually is to actively harm black people socially. It is a racist word. Saying racist shit makes you a fucking racist.

I agree it is not a morally justifiable word in any context. I also do not think that people that are dense enough to use it without thinking are actually doing any active consideration before they use the word. My guess, and I do not personally know him so it will always be that, is that he uses this word the same as he does "bitch" or any other insult because he's not put much thought into it and is insulated within a social circle where this is also just another word. They're idiots but they aren't necessarily racists. I've experienced and spoken with actual racists before. Pewdiepie simply doesn't align with my experiences with racists, though he absolutely fits the bill of moron.

I'm not really sure what you've seen that would make you give him the benefit of the doubt, or why you think "he's not racist, just stupid" is somehow better.

There's more to racism than just the KKK levels of overtness.

From my own personal experiences, I feel compelled to explain (but not excuse) where it all comes from. It's all irresponsible, it's all ill-conceived, and it's all bad. But there is a fundamental misunderstanding about where some of this language originates. I know people and have chastised them similarly over the years that have used this word casually as if it were just any other word, because most of us realize it is not. They were immature kids and teenagers of my own age at the time that thought it was okay to use for the reasons teenagers do a lot of things they do. Most of those people quickly grew past that after growing up a little. My contention is simply that Pewdiepie hasn't done that.

To me, it matters if this originates from a place of hatred or from a place of ignorance/stupidity. I don't know if I would call someone a racist from simply being immature the same way that I would call a white supremacist a racist.

Racism has a ton of different levels, and they're all bad. Especially for someone who is supposed to be a rolemodel for millions of kids.

That is more what I was trying to express. He absolutely does have a much bigger platform than most, and if he is able to use it to promote racist ideas, that's not a good thing. But you're right, there are a lot of levels to this discussion and I'm not sure how helpful it is if we align someone like Pewdiepie with David Duke. Are they both guilty of exactly the same thing? Maybe by some definitions that's true. But if Pewdiepie really is just a fool and isn't actually someone with racist thoughts or intent, we're doing the entire discussion a disfavor by aligning the two.

There are going to be people that are immature that use this word that we could help bring to the other side--at least if we don't push them further and further to the right by offering them no shot at redemption, sending them to a place where they may feel more welcome and start to embrace an ideology that they had never really considered before that. Good people can be corrupted into adopting terrible ideas as their own if they're put into a corner in that way. Everyone has the capacity for some sort of bad if we make it that way over one mistake, and I'm not sure blanket labeling everyone that makes this mistake as being as racist as a klansman is entirely helpful without having some sort of conversation on the matter first.

So how many times does PDP need to fuck up before you'll call him racist?

I cannot comprehend why some of you keep giving this guy the benefit of the doubt when he keeps doing the same thing

It's fucking baffling

I can't speak for everyone (and especially because I think Pewdiepie is the lamest representative of gaming available to the mass market), but for me, it's from personal experience. As I alluded to earlier in this post, I know kids that I grew up with that watched too much South Park and started throwing around "jew" as a pejorative. They did not understand the actual context and rationale behind it being included in that show. They are the same types of people that would use Nazi salutes or say "Heil Hitler" purely as a joke without thinking of what that really represents. We're not talking about white supremacists pushing an agenda they sincerely believe in; we're talking about idiot kids emulating something they saw on TV because it was funny there and clearly was "okay" there, so it must be funny and "okay" elsewhere to them.

At some point, it will be a game of semantics. Was he being racist? Or is he a racist? Can he be immature and use a racially-charged word without considering it and be not-racist? If that last question isn't possible, I don't know if I'm comfortable calling Pewdiepie a racist on the same level of racism as a Greg Withrow.

I dont think it's fair I have to accept being called a nigger and this fucking piece of trash is normalizing it. My point? Fuck being sympathetic to this shit. Like lets not.

I completely understand that and I think it's repugnant and, maybe more specifically, just something an ill-informed, ill-considered, and insensitive person like Pewdiepie would do. I would hope that he will do the responsible thing and own the mistake and ensure his fanbase understands that's not a word to use. I'm willing to see what his response is for one big reason, and that is...

If Pewdiepie does the unlikely and actually owns this mistake and says it's not a word that should be casually used, that he did it without thinking and he's actively going to avoid using it in the future, is that not a win? Labeling him a racist on our side isn't going to do nearly as much as if he comes out against it to his fanbase. He's more likely to find an excuse to not take blame, which is not always the sign of a racist--it's sometimes indicative of an entitled/puerile manchild.

That's part of the issue, South Park backed off on the political stuff last season but its been decades of normalizing horrible stuff just because it's funny, and get a load of this

Are we just sure that the guy isn't doing it for relevance and controversy? I mean, sure he got 50 million subscribers, but his videos barely get past 3 or 4 of million views anymore due his shitty content. The after this he puts a video titled "stream fails" which has nothing to do with this incident, and that one is already at 1.4 million views in 7 hours.
His wsj incident also has a 20 million count and his videos about Jake Paul also are in the 12 to 16 million.

Not saying that he is not a racist, but he also may be using this to generate drama for more views. After all, we all know what happens to famous people when they do terrible things. Nothing.

Edited to make it clearer that I'm not defending him, but it's using that to create controversy + views == money

It doesn't matter either way. If he's using feigned racism to get clicks, he's even worse trash than just a racist really.

Boogie would love if people were able to just use slurs. I'm sure he really wants to use homophobic slurs again without worrying about what people think about him.

He's a piece of shit.
He used homophobic slurs before? I just recently started watching his twitch and i enjoy his content but after this and if he did use slurs before i will absolutely unfollow.

Just watched the Pewdiepie stuff and it's disgusting i just can't understand how people defend it or claim "he didn't know better"

Just Googled "Austria racism" and it's not pretty.

Another blind person in this thread to his own countries racism.

This crap exists on a large scale everywhere. Never act like you live in some special holy land.

You're just minimizing what type of persom he is. The dude is trash. He was trash before this and he's gonna be trash after. Words and apologies mean fuckimg nothing. We have his actions on record over and over. Dude is bile. Just see it for what it is.

Racists saying I'm sorry after community backlash isn't a win. A win is if he delete his account and disappears from public. Calling a racist a racist isn't like sometging we should have to sit and debate while he absolutely doesnt care. Dont be naive.

I'd just like to point out that we don't have racism in southern US.
People can be very blind to problems in their area and community due to where and who they actually hang out with in that area.

Racism is always present to some degree, theres no big or small, if its racist it is bad, no matter how much.

One of their largest parties is a right-wing nationalist party that espouses a rhetoric suspiciously similar to "Blut und Boden"

But nah, totes no problems

You'll always have stupid people that can't deal with different cultures, like you already pointed out, it will never end. I don't care what others believe in or what other people look like and I am lucky to not be a minority in this way of thinking around here.

It doesn't matter either way. If he's using feigned racism to get clicks, he's even worse trash than just a racist really.

Oh no, of course it would not excuse his behaviour/racism. I'm just wondering if someone more knowledgeable about him knows if this could be him being a piece of shit just for clicks. I mean, his latest video makes it clear to me that either he did it on purpose to generate controversy or that he is using his racist slip to obtain more views.

In any case, it's terrible but if he is doing it for the views, this guy should just get banned from appearing anywhere. How terrible human being you gotta be to use racism for gain with what's going on in the world and with all the stuff happening to black people? I kind of hope that he is a plain racist and had a slip of his real character tbh. I could not understand it the other way, he is already setup with enough money as to do something as terrible as that for more fucking money. Disgusting.

I'll co-sign on this, and then add that probably most black people have different feelings on the word anyway, even among other black people, hard R or not.

If black people don't consistently feel okay with using the word, non black people should not be using it.....unless of course they're unloving sacks of shit, in which case they need to own up to what they are at least.
If you're a nazi, at least own it. Don't pretend like you also would see it wrong otherwise if it weren't for some reason that's far from clever.

Just watched the Pewdiepie stuff and it's disgusting i just can't understand how people defend it or claim "he didn't know better"

When he posted here during the first few months of GamerGate people found him using the f-word while posting on 4chan at the same time he was posting here, he defended himself saying that "it actually means cigarette" and that "it's only part of internet culture".

(I'm talking about Boogie, not Pewdiepie)

"it's only part of internet culture".

Yeah. This was the main defense force for a time. It pretty much goes along with "Everyone does this!"

Lol he still hasn't gave an half was apology yet?
Doesn't really matter except from maybe a business perspective since he's already made his stance on the issue clear.

He could have immediately denounced it and said it was awful for him to say to everyone watching his stream along with how they shouldn't use it either. He then could have affirmed that if people on chat tried to say it was okay by saying it isn't. Instead, the talk focused on "Welp, this is going to be a thing I'm going to have to deal with."

Lol, I used the bundle of sticks defense in elementary school. It didn't work then, shouldn't work now.

What is the F word?

To used to say it, he cant even manage the anger and he ended up stumbling, is pretty weird :/
I wish I understood how people stumble into racism.

To me it's like accidentally stumbling into cheating on your girlfriend/boyfriend.

Like, no you didn't. You did the shit consciously and intentionally. If you have words like these inside you for them to have ever been blurted out in anger or casually, you need to start asking yourself why rather than apologizing and making excuses. People need to try some accountability on for size.
What is the F word?
Fag/faggot

From the few videos I've seen from him recently(it's not like you can watch more than 1 or 2 a month without getting headaches) I can tell you that he is doing anything for clicks, it's highly likely he said it on purpose.

In any case, it's terrible but if he is doing it for the views, this guy should just get banned from appearing anywhere.

That's not how the world/the internet works sadly.

PDP is a grown adult, not a child. Why are you talking about children? Is that the only angle you can think of to try and let his racist ass slide?

To answer you questions, yes he is a fucking racist and he has a history of this shit. Just admit that there is nothing he could do that would get you to actually call him a racist. It's clear to me that that the word "racist" is more damaging in your eyes then actual racist action.

I remember my heated gaming moment during a difficult L4D2 run, my teamate shot me and downed me so I burned a cross on my neighbors lawn.

I actually have friends who are crosses and they say its okay for me too burn them, stop being so PC
