It was part of an experiment to show that swearing helps dull pain, that if you swear, you can keep your hand in ice water longer than if you put your hand in and say nothing.

Swearing in this test generally improves how long you can stand the pain for by 50%, 1m 15 vs 2 minutes with swearing. The more you swear the less effective it is, as Brian shows in the video. He actually lasts less by swearing as he is so used to swearing it has lost its taboo to him so the emotional response isn't there.
