Pillars of Eternity by Obsidian Entertainment (Kickstarter) [Up: Teaser]

Well that shut down any ideas of anything else besides a PC version. Which is good in my book. Focusing on one platform(I consider PC, Linux, and Mac more or less one platform) will help make that game great. I am hoping it will help show just how truly awful and lazy a lot of big name RPG ports and other ports to the PC are.

Oh anyone got an ETA on the next update? Isn't it supposed to be today?
I do think considering things like Dark Alliance "how you adapt for console" to be bad however, especially since that'd probably work about as well (better in ways?) on PC anyway, being basically a Diablo derivative.

But yeah, even if they were to go for console versions (probably better to look at Wii U/Vita though)? Definitely do that after the PC version is done and in our hands, I'd prefer more ports of PC focused games to be like that actually, but I guess they have to worry about Sony and especially Microsoft not being happy about having just the same content or something.
And the fact late ports usually don't sell all that well.

Although, I guess this really doesn't matter like it did in the 80s and 90s. You needed a reasonably modern, cutting edge computer to play the likes of the latest Ultima or Baldur's Gate, so even though the ports usually didn't work out that well either due to hardware restrictions or poor developer calls they were ideally an out to allow people to experience a game. Nowadays though you could easily make flashier versions of those games that run on a very wide range of machines, so it's not as if you gotta break the bank or get a new computer like you once did.

They hinted at some "special guests". Really anxious to see what they got in store for us.

Two ex-bioware people ... lol.

Mark Morgan would be a killer and Michael Hoenig would be total overkill imo.

I love Morgan ST but Hoenig created something as awasome as Throne of Bhall main theme

Baldurs Gate has absolutely amazing soundtrack that wasn't boring after you played BG for 300-600 hours.

Wasn't the ToB theme done by Inon Zur? Or am I horribly mistaken?

No you're not mistaken. Hoenig did the OG BG2 soundtrack, Inon Zur did the far superior Throne of Bhaal soundtrack.

Zur also did the god tier IWD2 track too.

Oh lol. I always thought it was Hoenig.

So Zur it is. Original BG2 sountrack was awasome but throne of bhall is just level above.

edit:

Damn i forgot completely about IW2 sountrack. So good.

edit 2:

Also it would be amazing if Ben Houge would get a chance. Arcanum music defined whole game

Yeah, I said it somewhere before in the thread, that I'd like a minimalist music approach like Arcanum. All these orchestras are sometimes too much.

With this kind of budget I think that an orchestra would be out of their reach. Even a less known Eastern European one.

Crawling towards the 2 million mark. I think they should come up with new stretch goals soon-ish to keep people invested in the success of the Kickstarter. Not that it's going bad, but the more the better.

Well there's an update coming today.

Well i don't think they are lesser known. They are cheaper but there are some famous bands which already are involved in creating music for games and movies even anime.

Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra

The Philharmonic has recorded music for several anime series. Notable shows include Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo, Cowboy Bebop, Soukyuu no Fafner, Giant Robo: The Animation, Ah! My Goddess: The Movie, Princess Nine, Vision of Escaflowne, Wolf's Rain, Hellsing Ultimate, Genesis of Aquarion.[2], and more recently, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. It has also recorded music for Namco's Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War, and together with the Hollywood Session Orchestra, for the SEGA action-RPG Phantasy Star Universe. It also recorded a big part of the Score for Avalon, and part of a performance is seen in the movie. Most recently they have recorded music for Square Enix's Final Fantasy XIII.

Whole word already uses EEurope.

The Banner Saga is going to be using a live orchestra for their game and their Kickstarter got around 700k in funding.

Not that thats really comparable, since Obsidian and the Banner Saga guys may have totally different priorities.

I'd be fine with just a quartet like in Arcanum :)

Or even smaller! I posted this earlier in the thread as example to music I'd love to see in fantasy video games.

its being built on unity so... ios/andriod release?

Q: Are consoles or tablet versions on Project Eternity's stretch goal list?

Feargus Urquhart: No they're not. It's a game that goes back to the roots of the great RPG games of the past and the focus of those was keyboard and mouse. Not that console games aren't great; they're just different. There's a big difference between Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance [for consoles] and Baldur's Gate II [for PC]. And we don't want to create some camel in the middle to try to straddle a line. It's do one thing or another, and we're going to try to do the PC and do that right.
I love this quote.

Oh I didn't meant it like that. Some of the most famous Orchestras are Eastern European. But there are some less known ones that could be hired for a lower budget.

I wonder how the achievement hunters, completionists feel. I mean if they think they might be interested in a kickstarter game would they kickstart it even if they don't want to because they may miss out on the achievement if they don't?

Just to expand a bit on the Orchestra stuff.

Journey the game for the PS3 has a beautiful OST from Austin Wintery and was recorded by the Macedonia Radio Symphonic Orchestra.

They offer remote recording sessions at a fraction of other well known orchestra budget.

If you read the comments on that article all complain of that aggressive competition in pricing.

Who knows? Maybe Obsidian can indeed make a great deal with one of these orchestras.

Pretty much this.

I've never understood the "but I need to see the two seconds of Shepard breathing or the game is not complete" crowd.

I mean, it doesn't matter if it's a level or a skin or an item. If it's not in the vanilla game, then the game just isn't "complete" for some people. It doesn't matter how trivial it is.

I'd like to see them bring Justin Cherry back as art director, or at least to design the portraits for the companions and main characters. To me he is the perfect artistic reference point for the mature aesthetic they're describing. His work is inspired by myth and not anime or fantasy stereotypes and his stuff is often thought-provoking and weird while still being beautiful.

I can't imagine MotB without his portraits and design inspiration, and his work on Dungeon Siege III elevated the fairly pedestrian world and characters immeasurably.

Update #8 - New Digital Tier, Novella by Chris Avellone, and Translations at $2.2M

We are still going strong over here on Kickstarter and we wanted to thank everyone that has been here since the beginning as well as those of you who have come on recently to back us with your pledge. With such great support, we want to thank everyone with a new addition to the $50 and later tiers, a new $110 digital only tier, and a big change to our $2.2M stretch goal.

Oh, and what are we doing this week as to updates you might ask? Josh Sawyer, Tim Cain and Chris Avellone will be posting updates and videos all this week starting on Sep 26 with Josh, Sep 27 with Mr. Avellone and a great one from Tim over the weekend.

French, German, and Spanish Translations added at $2.2M

We are glad to announce that we will add text translations for French, German, and Spanish when we reach this goal. As we hit more of our stretch goals, we hope to be able to add even more languages as well!

Novella by Chris Avellone added for $50 and Up!

Chris Avellone has been so thankful for everyone's support that he himself has pledged to write a novella in the world of Project Eternity. We are adding that to everyone who pledges $50 and up.

New $110 Digital Only Tier

Thanks to popular demand, we are adding a new digital tier at $110 that has early beta access to the game, thanks in the credits, a postcard thanking you for your pledge (sent physically) along with all the other digital benefits of the $140 Tier. Since we added the new novella written by Chris Avellone at the $50 reward tier - that is in there as well!

Oh and we have a little piece of artwork to share as well. The following is one of our traditional race and class combinations - the Human Fighter - but he's not just any Human Fighter. He has an integral role in the story that we will be hinting at soon. Don't worry, we will also be sharing more and more of the non-traditional options in the days and weeks to come.

There's nothing uniform about these art pieces they're giving us.

It's like: Can I get a glimpse of the actual aesthetic the game is going to go for please?

Part of me is like "Screw all the other languages! I want more content for meeeeeeeeeeee!".

But then, I don't really mind because it should boost up the pledges for a fair amount!

Well, screw your language! >(

Joking, I don't really care about playing on english, must of the time I do because of the VA, but I prefer to play this type of game on my first language, it's easier.
I just hope it's a good, or at least decent, translation.

So far we've seen the dwarven ranger piece and this human fighter. Both are likely from different areas of the world, so it makes sense they look different. I think its a bit premature to judge the whole art direction when we've only seen a couple pieces of art.

That said, it would be neat if the art director for the game could do an update for the Kickstarter.

Given Europe's PC market and the amount of text this game will (probably) contain, I think it's smart to commit to the translations.

Now... I *will* resist going to the new $110 tier. Yeah... right.

It's like: Can I get a glimpse of the actual aesthetic the game is going to go for please?

I would guess they probably don't have a defined style yet, just several concept art being made while trying to nail one down.

Early Beta Access is gonna spike the funds.
It's definitely tempting. $140, hmm. I guess I could make some of that money back by selling one of the copies. Ideally the boxed copy gives a digital key too, so I'd keep that one and sell the other without having to worry about shipping.

Edit: ok, I'm stupid, I didn't see that they added a better digital tier that has all the nice swag including CBT access and even the t-shirt (I think?).

Though, I feel like they should try to time the updates with the beginning of the day/right after lunch.

Also, an Obsidian AMA on reddit could be an excellent way to gain some additional publicity.
