Pillars Of Eternity: Complete Edition Coming To PS4/XB1, Launching August 29

I thought people cried about dem consoles dumbiing down dem CRPGs, yet here we are in the age of PC exclusives coming to console. I wonder if any of those types of complaints had any validity to them?

Besides that, PoE is a good CRPG but yeah it's not the master "return" a lot of us were hoping for. For me, that trophy goes to Divinity Original Sin. Still, it's good more people get to play this game and have CRPGs expand its horizons... but given Paradox's latest pricing debarcle, I'd say buy this on a sale (unless your region isn't effected).

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
Have you used the touch pad? It's not liek the one on the Stema controller: placed on the right and accessible and with haptic feedback. It's out fo the way and provides no feedback for improved accuracy.

Anyway, we don't know if it's being used by PIllars. Maybe they use it for inventory management? It's still awkward ot use, IMHO.

Yeah I find it works great when developers actually use it. I don't need haptic feed back if I get visual and audio feedback from my TV.

Cool. Always wanted controller support in the PC version, to the point of even giving the Steam controller a chance, but without the HUD being made for controllers it never felt right. Definitely picking this up.

I have it on PC but have barely scratched the surface.

My only control option is a wireless keyboard with trackpad, so I'm curious to see how the controller mapping will be implemented. I might double dip if it's well done.

I would consider the Steam controller first over a traditional gamepad if comfy couch gaming (tm) is important to you. I don't see a gamepad doign better than that no matter what they do, short of changing game mechanics (which I'm sure they didn't do).

I cannot imagine playing this without a mouse. Godspeed, console players.

(The game itself is great and has only gotten better with patches and expansions.)

I'll wait for more hands-on impressions, but if it's a decent port I'll consider double dipping. I never got around to the White March stuff.

The concern was valid. Look at Dragon Age and Mass Effect. These are console centric RPG franchises now. Though Mass Effect had a very good run :)

Not sure what the relvancy is with PIllars. Pillars exists because PC gamers believed in classic style CRPG's as great games and great platforms to tell great stories. It would have never existed on consoles in the first place.

That it can now make it's way to consoles is great. Hopefully Obsidian makes bank and can put that money towards sea monsters in PIllars 2!!

I will never ever get this. Divinity Original had a nice fighting system with a great use of elementals and how they work together. But besides that? Story, Characters, game world, writing, dialoges? It all was really forgetable. And the game was rather linear, too.

Pillars of Eternity on the other hand is the closest thing you get to Baldur's Gate. I don't know how it was at launch. But with the two addons and all the patches it's a masterpiece.

IMO it already started with KOTOR on Xbox.

See my edit, oops.

Oh. Yea, torment sucked.

After seeing how well torment performed on ps4? No thanks.

This game is from a different developer as well as a different publisher that porting it.

I do not understand how that is relevant when all these games were still developed with strong pc support in mind unlike mainly console oriented games such as dragon age inquisition

Has it been done well?

I mean, of course it can be done to some extent -- in the extremity you can just move a pointer using a thumbstick -- but can it be done while keeping the gameplay flowing well?

In the instances I am aware of where a RTWP game went console the console version either had its encounters cut down (e.g. Dragon Age Origins), or the battle system was gradually changed to be more action- and less strategy/positioning-focused (e.g. later Dragon Ages), or it wasn't all-in 6 party characters + large-scale encounters like PoE is in the first place.

If anyone can do it Obsidian can (they made the excellent NWN2 interface after all), but I still think it's too early to call it a solved problem.
I do believe it can be done well. Something like

left analog (and touch pad on PS4) = move pointer
right analog = move map view
d-pad left/right = shift quickly between targets
L2 + d-pad left/right = browse skills of chosen member
X = choose skill to use/confirm action/move characters
R1 & L1 = switch between player characters
R2 (or one of the face buttons) = pause/resume
triangle = open menu
+ whatever "shortcuts" one can do to the rest of the buttons that make sense to help do stuff quickly

does most of the core functions of the game without too much hassle and isn't anything too complicated, doesn't need too much of an overhaul of the existing systems and makes it quick enough to do a lot of the stuff during battles that it doesn't slow down the experience too much.

I'm shocked that there aren't any tinfoil hat posts about this being the reason why they went own to 5 party members in PoE2. Then again this ain't the Codex.

So is Torment.

Yeah that's wha I meant. It's a valid concern because it's a Unity game.. but Torment was released simultaeneously on consoles and PC, and this has had some optimization work done on it for he past couple of years so hopefully will perform better?

Erm, it's rather simple to ascertain their validity.

Play Baldur's Gate 2 on PC, then play Dragon Age Origins on PC, then play Dragon Age Inquisition on PC.

The whole reason the kickstarter movement for CRPGs exists and was (and is!) such a success is because they simply were not being made anymore in the style and complexity of something like PoE.

Interesting. Enjoy, console-folks, it's a great game!

As long as it's PC first (in design philosophy and controls) I don't mind the game appearing on consoles in anyway.

Well said.

Hands on from Gamespot is up.

On consoles, all movement is controlled by the left stick, while actions and other context sensitive options are on the shoulder and face buttons. A new radial menu is also available for players, which covers much of your needs while on your adventure. Despite these changes to the UI and control scheme, many of the more obscure PC features still remain. For instance, disabling companion AI is still available, giving players complete control over all party members' moves. Moreover, cursor control is still possible, and with a quick button press, players can still use the CRPG staple to engage objects and examine the environment.

The only reason I don't like less people in my party is because I miss more party banter.

I'll be honest, I hope this bombs. Publishers wanting console development is the reason this entire style of game went extinct and I don't think that happening again is worth a small group of console only people playing Pillars.

Can't imagine this controlling all that well, or there being much of an audience.

What is your deal?

You do know that would hurt the devs to correct?

Yeah sorry, I misread it. Thought you were saying the opposite.

Hopefully the entire game runs well, I remember the White March areas running worse on my Mac than the rest of the game.

Hoping this game bombs because of the fear that happens is pretty selfish.

Even if it does, if Kickstarter can bring them back once, Kickstarter can bring hem back twice, just be happy that PoE2 will have a higher budget for the time being. It's still a paradox published title, certainly a publisher that understands the pc audience.

I guess there's always the "danger" that PIlalrs sells 10 million copies, Obsidian becomes the new EA and Pillars 2 gets delayed to get turned it into a souless single player MMO with fetch quests and linear cutscene driven storytelling featuring inane writing.

But I think that's one of a very few unlikely scenarios. Also I'm sure Sawyer would leave and start his own little CRPG studio that I'd happily fund over on Kickstarter :p

More likely, they'll make a little money, gain some new fans, spend some more making Pillars 2 even better and we all benefit. Most likely, sadly I fear, this won't move many units and console gamers won't care. And Pillars continues as a PC only franchise with a few less bells and whistles.

I prefer the former scenario though.

I ought to give this another go. I got put off by the walls of text when I first played it on PC. That combined with getting stuck several times in where to go next lol.

Feel free to patch in the gamepad controls to the PC version whenever you want, Obsidian! I've been waiting a long time to play this game.

This is awesome!

Now bring Shadowrun and Tyranny too!

It blows my mind that Microsoft has let three games on its own license not come to their console. Especially when two of them would instantly be in the top handful of RPGs on the system.

Holy crap. I tweeted them multiple times about this before and they couldn't comment, now it's happening. Dreams do come true!

Douchebag. Yes, me.
Wonder if this has the shorter loading times from Pillars of Eternity 2? It's not done by Obsidian, after all. If not, than you should probably expect waiting about 5 seconds between all map transitions.

This was exactly my thought.

And 5 seconds? More like 10-20 seconds, some even 30-45 seconds. It was so awful I had to give up the game when I got to the first large city that required you to go in and out of like 30 buildings.

I have no idea how they screwed this up so bad. You're loading a background image and 20 sprite assets. WTF.

I'd say that's more because devs wanted to chase the kind of mainstream audience that had made consoles so successful, not because consoles absolutely can't handle the complexity, which is what some people argue. Maybe that was a valid point at the time of PS1 controllers, still, since they were still more limited in what they could handle (since dual analogs weren't yet standard), but I'd say that with the escape from the d-pad only ghetto, there's enough functionality in controllers to make them more viable so long as proper effort is put to think of some of the limitations/differences and work around them (like, a quick select for enemies, allies & skills removes a lot of the need for pointer movement)

And, I mean, it's not like games like these in the WRPG genre are selling 50+ million copies on PC alone in their non-dumbified form. That's why the complex games disappeared. No matter what the platform, simpler games are more accessible and thus sell more. "Look at Mass Effect & Dragon Age: Origins" aren't necessarily the right arguments to make when someone is saying "see, you don't necessarily have to dumb down cRPGs on consoles". They kind of are a result of chasing dumber mainstream audiences altogether (though not just on consoles) but yeah, that's a slightly different argument from the one that consoles are simply incapable of offering an enjoyable experience like this because supposedly the controls simply cannot work in a satisfactory manner.

Of course we'll have to see how well they have moved the controls to a controller, but I don't see it being an impossible task.

When will PC devs/publishers learn with console devs/publishers?
When a console game goes to PC after some time it usually it comes with a better entry price.
US50 is way to expensive.
Im glad about the announcement but wont even bother until it doesn't hit sub US30.

Same here. But party banter wasn't anywhere as good in PoE as it was in BG2 anyway, which is why I don't mind having less party members at the same time if it's to make them better.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Looked up some youtube videos of the game after reading this topic, seems very interesting. Will definitely be picking this up.

Hi everyone. New member here (haven't even got an avatar sorted out), thought I would jump in here for my first post as I'm a huge RPG fan and completed this on PC. I'm delighted that this is coming to console although of course it remains to be seen how user-friendly the adaptation is on a TV. So far as I am concerned anything that increases the potential audience for the genre is a good thing, especially as we see other major franchises drifting away into the action game genre.

Definitely interested, I remember wanting to get this when it was originally released on PC, but I don't game on my Mac at all. Interested, although launch price may be a bit high.

This is completely unexpected. I wonder how they are going to implement this on consoles. My only experience with RTwP combat on consoles are the Kotor games and those had way less skills and companions to control than PoE.

Radial menus are probably the best innovation when it comes to bringing this genre to the console. From the bit I played, it was pretty easy to get the hang of combat and party management.
