Pillars of Eternity |OT| You must gather your party before venturing forth.

Given how almost none of the infinity engine games are turn-based, and crpgs classics often are truly TB. I find complaints on TB to be very petty. I think the new Torment may actually suffer for being TB.

Biggest disappointment there. That stupid pole. If you want a Torment sequel they should have kept it RTCwP but alas....

The flight plan I just filed with the agency list me, my men, Dr. Pavel here. But only one of you!
ya rpgcodex can be some real echo chamber insanity sometimes. Pay that shit no mind.

You have no idea how glad I am with their decision to got turn based.
I really wanted to like Pillars but the real time with pause combat feels like such a slog to go through. I had to stop after a couple of hours. Could never be bothered to finish either of the Baldur's Gate games either, mostly for the same reasons.
The only reason I was able to finish Planescape was because combat wasn't a big focus of it's game design and I went out of my way to avoid combat as much as possible.

I don't disagree with their review.

I'm the exact opposite. When I see turn based I think why would John Doe just stand there for like a minute scratching his butt. Oh yeah it's not his turn therefore he is somehow petrified. Unless it's outside of combat in which he can move around freely. MY IMMERSION!!!!!

RPGCodex is full of people with very... particular preferences. I can't imagine actually reading a review on the codex, because I have a hard time believing that how codexers feel about something will have any predictive power for how any other human being would feel about it.

What the fuck is that review?

Way before that, Bioware made Baldur’s Gate and it was pretty and shone like a tinfoil star. Black Isle managed to get their hands on that aesthetically-pleasing engine and made Planescape: Torment, the best game ever written. With like words and stuff.
You know, that game for SMART PEOPLE, like the author, obviously. With words and without any stupid guns for silly babies!

Like all great RPGs, Torment sold fuck all, while the Baldur’s Gate series went on a world tour, sold millions of copies, and turned Bioware into a powerhouse, EA’s favorite bitch, and a true champion of diversity.
What the fuck even is this sentence?!?!

As I’ve mentioned in the past, the pause is an honest admission that fast-paced, party vs party, real-time combat is too chaotic to be controlled on the fly and the AI is too retarded to be relied on, and thus you have to pause this interactive movie to issue some basic orders and show the AI how it's done.
To be honest, I think Obsidian did a fantastic job designing the combat mechanics and I couldn’t help but admire some of Sawyer’s design decisions. Had PoE been a challenging TB game, the system would have shone. Sadly, its potential and all the clever ideas are wasted on a game that often plays itself and goes extra mile to ensure that all your choices are totally awesome (because you’re awesome too!).
it never ceases to amaze me that every opinion has its more extreme version. On GAF, people hate on BioWare's "every button press makes something awesome happen" philosophy in DA2. Here, the reviewer blames Pillars of Eternity for the same thing.

This review is the most pathetic piece of self-wankery I've seen in a while. And to think that people complain about Polygon.

What's funny is that there are a lot of valid points made there. Reading this did make me realize that some skills were mainstays in my arsenal for the entirety of the game (though when I think about it that's probably the reason I sometimes encountered trouble and at points sucked bad at fights).
I can't agree that the game doesn't let any build fail. I've played the opening 15 hours twice and the difference between a competent and a bad build were major.

Is this piece representative of what the Codex is like? Because, holy shit, if these people are the definition of RPG fans then I'm not sure I want to count myself as one.

Water is not wet!
i cant help but laugh when regular people make it to the Codex. The Codex is like scat porn. Its not for everyone.

Cant wait for more Pillars. After i finish up with Witcher 3 i might try for that Triple Crown achievement in preparation for the expansion.

Did you see their other PoE review?

Everything in this game is textbook, safe and derivative, there are no risks involved anywhere, the game practically plays itself with barely any input from the player. The only emotion PoE evoked from me during the 41 hours it took me to finish it was a feeling of ennui that kept telling me, ‘maybe I should play IWD again’. I doubt that should be your objective when you make the ‘ultimate’ IE homage. Obsidian promised the story of PS:T, combat of IWD and the exploration of BG, but somewhere along the road they got confused, and what they gave us instead was the story of BG, the combat of PS:T and the exploration of Gothic 4.

This is literally the worst Obsidian game I’ve played to date. That’s right, I even had more fun with Dungeon Siege 3 - at least it was a fun beat ‘em up, as opposed to this lifeless, uninspired husk. Disappointment, thy name is Pillars of Eternity

Have you got any links to similar diamonds? Might be useful when I'm feeling like getting outraged :|

Morbic curiosity is a truly terrible thing.

edit: Up - oh wow. Now that's what I call being not in touch with the times.

In a world where things like GamerGate happen and actually get attention I can't get too angry over this stuff. it's more hilarious than anything else really.

Reading the last few pages in this thread is an echo chamber itself too. The point I agree on in the "review" is the lack of hard counter. It makes for boring encounters where you spam the same tactics again and again.

I liked the game a lot but they can improve encounter design a lot in the expansion and sequel.

There was another review that was pretty glowing.

The third review was the result of some big drama thing and was salvaged from a draft of the review they were planning to write at the beginning but for one of the authors, real life got in the way and the other one didn't really like the game.

When people say GAF hivemind, this is it. The whole of GAF has an echochamber effect in itself.
This thread ain't half bad.

I still need to play this game but maaaan, my backlog.

The German magazine PC Games just released a small preview for the upcoming addon:

http://www.pcgames.de/Pillars-of-Et...rch-in-der-E3-Vorschau-Intelligenz-1-1162833/

The most important points are an AI for your party members (different behaviours and enemy engage options), solo-stealth (you can toggle stealth for every party member separately on and off), level 15 as the new max level with new abilities and cross-class talents.

And there are new screenshots:

Like any forum/site, there is useful information to be gleaned from it. Like any forum/site, 90% of it is throwaway. It just happens to be a particular kind of crap that tends to grate more with its approach.

Finally got my disk today, I have not had the time to actually play this game, so just one queston from someone uninitiated when it comes to PC games, do I need my Steam/GoG code or can I just install the game from my disk? Because if I don't need the code I could give it to one of my friends for his upcoming birthday.

I just got this game and I'm excited to play it. Let the hand wringing over the character creator commence!

I will definitely be going for a pint in the Goose and Fox later. See you all there

I was thinking of having a 3 man shield / sword wall of fighters at the front and a back line of a mage, a rogue and some sort of healing person.

What does PoEGAF think? good strategy?

Update 99

Announcing the Expansion and Update 2.0

Update by Justin Britch, Associate Producer

Hey everyone. I'm Justin Britch and I'm the new task master for the Pillars of Eternity expansion. I have been at Obsidian for over two years now and have spent most of that time supporting the production teams all over the company. Bug reports, task tracking, and updates to production tools has been my life at Obsidian up until recently, but I'm excited jump into the fray.

Announcing The White March, Part I

We have an expansion to show you! Pillars of Eternity: The White March - Part I is going to add additional character levels, spells, talents, areas, items, and companions to Pillars of Eternity. The expansion will come in two parts, and backers who already purchased the expansion will receive both part I and II. We will be announcing the release date soon, but part I is not in the far future.

New Companions

Zahua

From Eric Fenstermaker:

Zahua comes from an agrarian people known as the Tacan that dwells in the Ixamitl (ih-SHAH-mitt -ull) Plains to the north. (You may have known him as Forton once, but we renamed him to reflect his region of origin.) He belongs to the Nalpazca, a strict order of warrior-monks that constitutes the Tacan's standing army.

The Nalpazca distinguish between the material world and the imagined world of perceptions, feelings, and false structures, seeing the latter as the limiting force that prevents a person's transcendence. They employ extreme practices to remain ever-conscious of what is truly real, and are known for exhibiting bizarre anti-social behavior in public settings, consuming powerful hallucinogenic drugs, and inflicting great pain upon themselves, all so as to allow themselves to "see more clearly." There are even rumored to ritualistically cannibalize the flesh of the recent dead so that they might come to terms with their own mortality, though such rumors have the ring of superstition.

Zahua is the greatest living practitioner of Nalpazca beliefs, and even as you meet him, he is in continual pursuit of their ideals, which he believes will transform him into an unbeatable combatant. Above all, he believes in suffering as the path to enlightenment, and nearly every inch of his body is covered in scars - mostly self-inflicted. While some might see that as a grim or depressing viewpoint, from Zahua's perspective, suffering is a thing of beauty, to be admired and revered, and he is often able to appreciate situations that would dishearten most others. (Perhaps with a little too much cheer for some people's taste.)

The player will meet and get to know Zahua as a party member in White March Part I, and then his vision quest will come into focus later, in Part II.

The Devil of Caroc

From Carrie Patel:

The Devil of Caroc is a bronze golem inhabited by the soul of a convicted murderer. She's ruthless and relentless, yet something about the player piques her interest when they first meet.

The Devil was once a trapper in Cold Morn, a village that became notorious for its role in the Saint's War. When she and her neighbors let the Readceran troops pass through town unopposed, they became a symbol of treachery and cowardice throughout Dyrwood. The Purges that swept the country began in Cold Morn, and everyone the Devil ever knew perished when an angry mob burned the village to the ground. The Devil survived and sought revenge on the men and women who set her home ablaze.

She's still a rustic at heart, but her crude manners belie cunning and a cynical sense of humor.

Update 2.0 New Features

he White March is also going to introduce a few new features and quality of life improvement options. These updates will be given to everyone, not just people who purchase the expansion. Adam created a video showing off some of these new features:

DVDs and DVD Updates

Note from Brandon:

HNNNGGGG those 2.0 features look amazing. I don't even want to play anymore until we get that update (not that it isn't still fun, just those things will up my enjoyment factor pretty substantially).

Sorry for the double post but I finally watched the video and OH YES, the new features sound (and look) amazing. Range indicator? Excellent. Party AI? Excellent! Individual stealth? Excellent!!

It's all good and I can't wait to play the expansion :D

Can't believe they didn't mention what's clearly the best new 2.0 feature: frosty breath.

Not like this, Obsidian, not like this.

Cannot fucking wait.

I hope it's big, I will wait for the second addon otherwise

and damn, those rpgcodex reviews have certainly shaken my faith in that Website, I used to think they were the good guys, but apparently the are looking for different values than me in RPGs.

Definitely cannot wait for this. Finally managed to get stuck into the game this week as I've been on holidays and I'm almost done with Act 3.

Those 2.0 features will be a godsend as my biggest issue so far is the AI which could use a lot of work especially when you have 3-4 melee characters. They get all sorts of stuck on each other and then just stand there unless I help them out. Also not a fan of how you can't see the range of spells but I assumed that was a design choice. Glad to see it coming in the patch as well.

I assume we can't buy the expansion as an addon on the Pillars website any more correct? Hopefully we get some details up on steam/gog soon.

dude

I thought the golem was the monk. Interesting.

I wonder if the third character is going to be Cadegund, seeing as how they brought back Forton.

jon bones

hot hot hanuman-on-man action
With the addition of Party AI, I am FULLY ON BOARD to finally play this.

Really can't wait. Do we know what the pricing structure will be?

I *think* I have a spare key for this (steam or gog). Too many of those high-tier kickstarters come with several keys / keys for other games (which is a bit nonsense if you ask me).

So first to quote me gets a shot at redeeming that maybe key.

I still have to play this game, I think I'll get to it soon enough

just wondering, if I buy a physical copy from amazon, will I get a steam key and will I be able to play the game through steam?

I believe you get to choose between activating the game on Steam or GOG, so yes.
