Pink Floyd to release new album The Endless River in October

Thorgerson built real props for his album cover photography right up to the end. And now they immediately settle for an unconvincingly Photoshopped picture?

Might as well see who's responsible (I was half expecting Hugh Syme, honestly).

Yeah, I can see some of The Division Bell in the titles on some of these tracks. Hopefully it won't be too similar as for me the album was a bit so-so. I am hoping there are quite a few instrumental parts as they usually stand out the best on post Waters Pink Floyd albums.

I should have mentioned, the ONLY track with lyrics is the final piece, Louder Than Words.

So it's 90%~ instrumental.

I'm looking forward to it. The thing that's so shit about the last two and On An Island is the horrific lyrical work. I think the music is mostly still pretty.

Richard Wright is still dead and Roger Waters still not in Pink Floyd, right?

Seen how they've been using Richard Wright's already recorded stuff and demos, and how Roger Waters was an integral part of the band so long as they worked together in synergy (ie, up to The Wall at the most) and how boring The Final Cut is, I get that Richard Wright's immediate presence is missed, but I'm still optimistic.

Man those track times are short. When I hear "Pink Floyd album consisting of instrumental ambient music" I'm not thinking half the songs being under 2 minutes

Loads of whiners complaining about new Floyd here.

I discovered Pink Floyd when I was a young teenager after watching Pulse with my Dad. Over the next 20 odd years my appreciation has only grown, very slowly getting to know more and more of their work. A young me would write off Meddle and Animals but as I've grown older (and you have grown colder) I have a finer sense of taste.

To me, anything, absolutely anything that is released under the Pink Floyd name is to be thankful for. Knowing that you will never ever see your favourite band live, that it's an impossibility is horrible. Same with Genesis, I'll never see them live, let alone with Peter Gabriel.

I'm looking forward to this.

Considering they seem to be split into parts, they could just be portions of longer songs. Like each side is one full song. It looks like this may be the case, but I guess we'll see.

I want to believe this will be good.

I didn't really like The Division Bell, so the idea of the out-takes rejected from that album being re-worked and released really doesn't appeal to me.

Maybe Dave should have just released this as a solo project.

Why would he do that when Mason and Wright are on the album?

I've always felt that post-Waters Floyd just lacks a certain something. There's some lovely stuff musically, but without Roger's endless rage to focus them it all feels a bit soft and noodling to me.

Gilmour is a supremely talented dude -and will forever be a hero of mine just for the part he played in getting EMI to give the deal they did to a teenage Kate Bush- but as a band leader and lyricist he can't hold a candle to Roger Waters.

About Face and Momentary Lapse of Reason are the only Gilmore-led albums that I like. God-tier guitar player but his deadpan singing style gets old.

Incredibly amazing. Made my entire life.

I only wish Waters was a part of this. Come on, boys, patch it up for the people

Did Mason contribute to this project apart from playing in the original sessions? Did either of them write any of the songs?

I can see your point and to some extent agree, however to me it does seem to me to be a Gilmore project using material that Pink Floyd originally rejected rather than a fully-fledged Pink Floyd album.

There will never be another "fully-fledged" Pink Floyd album. Wright is sadly gone and Rogers will unlikely ever perform with Gilmour and Mason again (except possibly through some charity type event ala Live 8)

These are old dudes, doing what they want to do. This album will not be 70's Floyd, it will be 90's Floyd.

In answer to your question, yes to both:

Gilmour said the idea to bring ‘The Endless River’ came when he and drummer Nick Mason started sorting through the music that they had made for Division Bell sessions with Rick, who died in 2008.

“We listened to over 20 hours of the three of us playing together and selected the music we wanted to work on for the new album. Over the last year we’ve added new parts, re-recorded others and generally harnessed studio technology to make a 21st century Pink Floyd album. With Rick gone, and with him the chance of ever doing it again, it feels right that these revisited and reworked tracks should be made available as part of our repertoire,” Gilmour said in a statement.

Mason said he was reminded of Rick a lot while working on the new music.

“’The Endless River’ is a tribute to Rick. I think this record is a good way of recognizing a lot of what he does and how his playing was at the heart of the Pink Floyd sound. Listening back to the sessions, it really brought home to me what a special player he was,” Mason said.

I'm all for hearing anything they've got lying unused in the archives from any of their albums. Same with queen. Short of money, I don't know why they even bother with albums. Just stick the files on your website, 1 minute outtakes and all.

I wish Radiohead would do this. They've got a ton of material that's 10-15 years old that they'll never revisit for future albums, just put that shit out.

They've quite made up outside of the music. Gilmour's (along with Mason) played on a few of Waters' Wall shows since Live8, and Roger and Dave have played together a few times in some small charity events.

I don't think Roger could ever go from "Pink Floyd is a spent force creatively" to back recording new music with Dave and Nick though. He's quite comfortable in his own little lane now. And its certainly not like he needs the money ( they're still counting money from the Wall tour, that's how successful it was),

I completely agree with you... The new album is going to be great.

Roger Waters has a new song out also.. called If I Were God.. its good.

I wish I could say more than 'meh', but it's really just a b-side quality Floyd tune for me... does it feel like a recycled montage of other songs to anyone else? Key changes and fills are very derivative. Revisiting similar sounds across albums is a bit of a hallmark for the band, but this is even more than the normal "oh, hey! That's the riff from XX".

On the plus side, the lyrics aren't terrible, on par with DB stuff. Don't think I'll be picking up this album, tho. The clips aren't inspiring so far.

Tune sounds fine to me, lyrics are pretty bad though. Probably a good thing that that's the only song with vocals.

I'm digging the hell outta the actual music but the lyrics won't stop shitting all over the place. Opens with "We bitch and we fight". Seriously? So shitty.
