What does that even mean? Seriously..no idea. Do people enjoy reading this style of writing?
Unnecessarily verbose and flowery language to hide the fact that they don't have anything important to say.

It's a mainstay for music critics.

Here, I'll rewrite it for them:

This is volume for the voiceless, a silver bullet for the wolves, and a redistribution of sovereignty. It’s venom to immobilize cheaply uniformed imposters, flatulent greedheads, and cynical buffoons perverting the truth on cable news. When institutions lacked authority and insurrection seemed permanently imminent, El-P and Killer Mike hurled 11 grenades, offering redemption through untrammeled rage. If justice remained elusive, retaliation could be had as fast as closing your eyes and counting to fuck.

"There are eleven songs on this album."

the hell? I've been looking at their site the past few days and just thought they weren't updating in prepartion for this.... but you have to scroll down to even find it? Why isn't this the first thing you see when you go to Pitchfork?

wah wah wah.

Haha, thanks. I do try and stay somewhat current, but I'm a guitar player at heart and these are unfriendly times.
I'm going to make an effort to check some of this out. So far I've listened to some Perfume Genius and I'm digging it.

Lots of that is referencing the record itself.
try the Cloud Nothings record. it's really reminiscent of the heavy guitar driven 80's alt stuff like Dino Jr. and Sister-era Sonic Youth.

I'd also say check out the Ex Hex album Rips, has a very Runaways feel at times.

Maybe I'm just a dope but here's an exert from the #1 album..

I do, but I've heard the album. I think it describes the album fine. One might wonder why you'd try to attract a new person to an album that way. I think for most of the readership this list is like a recap of the year. A lot of people have probably listened to 30-40 of these albums extensively.

Why would you say that?

Because that was the most pretentious paragraph filled with inane bullshit I've read in a long time. I figure there's only one group of people that could be impressed by such ostentatious garbage.

^ See, I can do it too, Pitchfork. Big words where small ones suffice! Very patrician.

To be completely honest if you don't already know who El-P or Killer Mike are based on previous work, I doubt listening to the first album is going to change your opinion. The second album is A LOT more accessible. You might as well tell him to try and listen to Fantastic Damage.

Piñata # 43
RTJ2 #1

Niiiice Against Me! and Frankie Cosmos got an honorable mentions.

Attack DeMarco should have been #1.

based off the descriptions I'm gonna listen to Dude Incredible on Spotify next...

RUN THE JEWELS 2

I'm greatly surprised that made #1. Don't know the majority of the other albums, but it's great to see this so highly regarded.

I'm shocked to be in agreement with Pitchfork's pick for album of the year.

Why has every music critic been ignoring Antemasque though?

Really nice seeing Todd Terje in the top ten. Everyone should give "It's Album time" a listen, it's fantastic.

I have to say though even though Benji is my favourite album this year I'm glad it got beaten by Lost in the Dream.

Kozelek deserved that shit the way he was acting.

I guess Black Messiah just didn't make the cut for their 2014 list?

I'm okay with RTJ2 being #1 though. As far as hip-hop records go, it's either that, Piñata or People of Today for me.

I'd probably have listened to it more if my favorite songs weren't already more than a year old. There was really only the intro and the song with Bryan Ferry that were close to matching those EP's for me.

Where the hell does Pitchfork even find this shit? After a quick scroll through I've probably heard of like 4 bands/artists on the entire list. And that's just heard of.

I always try to listen to some of the shit Pitchfork peddles every year, but it always sounds bland as hell and samey throughout an entire album. Maybe I've just picked weird ones, or maybe my palate just doesn't work the same.

Don't they usually throw in some token black metal album they like, too, kind of seemingly to prove they're eclectic. I'd think Ne Obluiviscaris' Citadel would fit in with that.

RTJ2 was fucking incredible

it also wasn't for everyone and I know that

but good for them, it really took me by storm that is certain

also glad to see syro scoring high, feels almost like an obligation towards Aphex, but he would have earned a relatively high score regardless

So if you've only heard of 4 of the artists on the list, you can't really call it shit then. How about listen to some of them, because there are some excellent picks in this Top 50.

All the artists in the top 10 are extremely popular and were highly anticipated within their scene, but not really bands you would know about if you don't follow Big Tent Indie.

And I think if p4k just threw in some metal record it would be disingenuous. It's not their area. They'd probably just choose some shit like Sunbather anyways.

Good to see im relevant with the times as always, I know maybe ten albums from the list and have heard half of those.

I wasn't really intending the "shit" in that to mean "shitty" in this particular case, because I haven't listened to them. It mostly means "stuff." As I said, though, Pitchfork seems to have a sort of style that my palate doesn't really agree with at all. I've tried a fuckton of times to get into their top albums (both of the year and of decades), and I just can't. I'll try again this year, though.

It's just baffling sometimes to know I've got about 80 albums I need to sort through on my own list and like... none of them are on here. Kind of cool, too, in a way.
