Pitchfork's Top 50 Albums of 2014

So if you've only heard of 4 of the artists on the list, you can't really call it shit then. How about listen to some of them, because there are some excellent picks in this Top 50.

He's picked his genre and he's sticking with it!! I was gonna mention that fact that someone who doesn't know who aphex twin is probably not the audience for a top 50 list to begin with. Then I realized that he hadn't released an album in a long time and some of the these people were even born when all those awesome videos came out. Then I realized I'm old. But on a positive note at least I sorta proved that it doesn't matter how old you are. Sometimes you just don't care anymore and that's fine.

I guess I'm officially old, I knew only a handful of stuff on that list, and the #1 well I gave it a listen, and naw...what happened to hip-hop?

Anyway the Aphex Twin being there seems like a try hard to make some people happy because it's out of place on that list, and it's was pretty much the only thing on there I gave a shit about this year aside from Atlas.

But opinions and all that.

How is Syro out of place?

Aphex Twin does seem like a try hard because it doesn't deserve to be on the list at all. To be honest Grouper doesn't either for the same reason. You can listen to the album like 20 times and still nothing stands out. There are a handful of moments on Aphex Twin and the "i get it" moments are fleeting.

pretty much everything you post should be in quotes because the posturing, pseudo-intellectualism and elitism are so transparent

Just saying what the album sounds like to me m8. Not even saying it's bad. It's fine.

Dunno what posturing pseudo-intellectualism is even supposed to mean, as I haven't said anything out of the ordinary at all.

Sure I'll complain about the list being boring, but that's why this is a thread. To talk about the list and the music on it.

"My fav wasn't on the list? Fuck everything"

Not sure what people expect out of any Top X Music List besides snagging a few recommendations on artists they might not have heard from. There is no such thing as definitive lists, especially with a major publication like Pitchfork.

If we were talking about Iil' Wayne or someone like that then I could understand this reaction to an extent. But RTJ2 is like one of the most old school rap albums in a long time. Like Pitchfork said, it screams Public Enemy and early Ice Cube.

Ariana Grande was unstoppable this year. The former Nickelodeon star conquered the radio, the charts, the tabloids, the TV circuit, and the meme factories, ascending from Victoria Justice/Miranda Cosgrove purgatory to the Katy/Miley/Gaga A-list on the strength of a powerhouse voice and a charmingly goofy off-mic persona. In a single week this fall, she duetted with Little Big Town on the CMA Awards, partnered with Major Lazer on Lorde’s Hunger Games soundtrack, and gyrated with the Weeknd in the "Love Me Harder" video. Girl was everywhere. But what a delight it was having this pint-sized, big-haired, dimple-cheeked, cat-eared, not-a-girl-not-yet-a-woman in our lives. My Everything was a time capsule of the year in chart pop: the Max Martin-fueled saxobeat riot of "Problem" (with ubiquitous Iggy Azalea feature), the Zedd-fueled arena-EDM rocket blast of "Break Free", the Ryan Tedder-fueled power ballad "Why Try". There’s even a DJ Mustard nod in the "Hands on Me" breakdown, for maximum 2014-ness. Holding it all together were those octave-leaping pipes, as Ariana carried on the vintage Mariah/Xtina tradition of sharp, streetwise divadom. —Amy Phillips

A) Aphex Twin is one of the few I do know on there.

B) I haven't picked my genre. I listen to quite a few different genres. Hell, I listen to many genres that Pitchfork loves, I just apparently don't get the appeal of the particular albums they seem to like. The exception to this is pretty much rap. I don't listen to much of that at all. Once in a while something popular will catch my interest, but I'm not into it enough to seek more.

less that is was decent art and more that it's art that agrees with the sensibilities at pitchfork because it doesn't look like a metal album, lol.

Ignoring the dumb ass vocals for a second and that was barely a metal album. And yes, their cover art was actually quite good.

Music is so vast, it definitely doesn't mean you're out of touch for not knowing a lot of p4k's choices.

Seeing some of the complaints of "I can't believe this isn't on there!" and "I haven't heard of these bands!" is exactly how I feel when I look at the best of the year list from The Quietus. If you guys want to read a list by some real music snobs, check this out: http://thequietus.com/articles/16739-albums-of-the-year-2014

Usually I get worked up over what the top album is or the top 10, but honestly I just don't care this year. I don't think this year was necessarily bad for music, but nothing really jumped out at me as a clear standout.

That site caters to a completely different audience though. Pitchfork is much more general and covers most genres. It's all experimental, noise, drone, metal at Quietus. Same thing with Tiny Mix Tapes and it's focus on experimental, electronic, etc. I don't see any of them being snobs.

Maybe some of you just aren't into current indie music that Pitchfork covers? I don't watch the Teen Choice Awards and complain..

Anyways, good to see the Shellac album show up on someone's top 50 list. Not the best Shellac record but it still rips.

Snubs because you haven't heard oh any of these bands?

I don't know man, i went to see the quietus list, and there's a bunch of record i've never hear of. And it's ok, because that measn that i've got a bunch of new shit to listen to.

My thing is that The Quietus still reviews almost all of the same stuff Pitchfork does and just shits on most of it.

I would think more people on Gaf would be familiar with these artists considering the reaction to popular artists when they're brought up. Hm.

Can't believe the Syro acclaim. Tried to listen to it. Sounds as if someone bashed some random buttons on music maker and called than an album.

This.

Pitchfork isn't even that high on the list as far as music snobbery goes anymore. I align my tastes with Pitchfork mostly and LOVE their Music Festival they put on every year in Chicago but a lot of stuff they review is pretty accessible and covers a wide range. Maybe not as wide as metal, as some people have suggested they cover, but they put out decent lists and give promo to decent artists.

Props to Quietus though for the Clark promo. His album is excellent, dare I say better than Syro.

Syro isn't the best Aphex Twin album but to say he's just mashing buttons and calling it an album is extremely short sighted. Not everyone is going to like it, and that's fine, but it's still top tier even though it's not his strongest. Dude is a genius and your faves have had most likely been influenced one way or another by his musical talents.

That's exactly how I see it. It's a good thing. There were a couple bands on the gorilla vs. bear list that I hadn't heard of at all like the Alvvays and Sales albums.

Basically every single album on there has been highlighted in numerous other critics top lists.

Actually one of the worst things about these lists is how homogenous they are, with the usual suspects only switching spots.

Nooooooooo, no no no no.

It really doesn't

PREACH IT BROTHER. There are thousands of best of lists out there. To single in on one and complain incessantly is childish. Pitchfork covers a specific range of music and has their target audience. OH NO.

I'm going thru that Quietus list and listening to some cool shit I've never heard of... so that's cool i guess.

Yep, me too!

There's nothing snobby about not liking a list with basic choices. It's fine if that's what p4k enjoyed, it's just that it's not a very useful tool for finding interesting music.
