Wow 2000s are over and I didn't know that?

Anyway, that list is baaad. I mean, really bad. Beyonce? Really?
My top five would be something like Neighborhood # 1, The other side of Mt Heart Attack, Mississipi and something from The National and GYBE!, in random order.

Yeah, your list is really that much better.

And I'm enjoying this shitting on those who shat. It's fun and engaging!

There should be Flickchart for music. It should be as simple as "I like this song better than that song".

Yes, really. Really.

You guys sure are edgy for hating on a pitchfork list. I'm sure glad you had elitism and aren't being elitist for your own tastes!

Paper Planes is a fantastic song.

Why? It has absolutely no musical merit whatsoever. MIA can't sing, it has a generic club beat, and it appeals to the "gangsta"-glorifying lowest common denominator. To top it off it has that contrived cash register / gunshot bs.

Some of the other songs in the top 20 I don't personally like but I can understand how someone else would. But Paper Planes is just bad in every sense of the word.

Except that it's . . . not. It's was never meant to be a smash success, but it blew a hole with those "contrived sounds" into the mainstream. MIA's fit the track perfectly. The beat is probably the most generic thing about it, but that's one part to a very large whole, not the whole itself.

Some people just like to have fun while listening to music, not worrying about the Arcade Fire's and the Neutral Milk Hotels. MIA's Paper Plane song is more fun than getting a kap dance, hundred dollar bill shower from Catherine Zeta Jones.

I think the song overall is pretty alright, expressive beat and all but as you've pointed it out the gun shots made it more generic than it is.

Hey junior brigade, can you please explain to me how the gunshots make it more generic? Show me a song that actually uses them like Paper Planes does. I dare you.

Y'know, your avatar makes me wanna give you a pass, but holy crap at being the arbiter of merit. I like the production on the song. M.I.A.'s never presented herself as anything approaching a chanteuse. It's fun to sing along to at parties. It had a huge cultural impact when it was released. And while the lyrics may not be Pulitzer-worthy, they're more than just another gangster tune. (Granted, knowing about her background may be providing me with more insight.)

And I don't understand how you couldn't see how anybody else would like the song.

Pitchfork's dick-riding really sucks the fun out of music.

i know what you mean.. it seems like they get more jerking off over their own lists (the decades not even over jeez) and converting drones through "best new music"

With you on this one.

Every band has an album that leaks or they self release, everyone loves it (For 09; Cymbals eat guitars, The Antlers are two that come to mind) then pitchfork BNM's them and BAM the hate train starts.

Pitchfork gets a lot of hate because you're too cool for the cool kids, but does that mean they're always wrong? Not at all. In fact, the majority of the time they're pretty spot on. All it takes is a little maturity and ability to take things with a grain of salt and listen and make up your own damn mind.

Like I've said in the past, I don't really read too much of P4k's reviews (generally they just come off as overwrought and poorly-written), but I don't see them being 'too cool for the cool kids' in any way these days. I mean, this goofy decade in music thing was sponsored by Haagen-Daz!

:lol An overall agreement on quality of music is about as factual as you can get. It's like rotten tomatoes. There will always be those that dislike, but when everyone else who's opinion is worth a damn agrees, you get your facts.

When the majority of things that pitchfork likes gets love from other outlets, why not shit on them too? It's because it's cool to hate on the fork.

In the end, just listen and see if you like it yourself.

19. R. Kelly "Ignition (Remix)"
:D

And it's just a list, people. Wow Pitchfork is shoehorning an entire decade of music into 500 songs -- again. Just because you actually lived through this one doesn't give you the excuse to make this into a big deal.

I just want to add that All My Friends by LCD Soundsystem is fucking brilliant.
Also I don't get Animal Collective. I've tried to, really tried to listen to MPP but I think I've given up. Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix for album of the year.

There isn't a list of all 500 is there?
I'm curious to see if the Libertines made the cut but don't want to go through 50 pages.

To be honest. I really didn't like Arcade Fire, Muse, Radiohead and LCD Soundsystem. This decade I most enjoyed New Order, RHCP, Eagles of Death Metal and John Mayer. I also loved some songs of Kanye West and Poets of the Fall, but despised most of their other songs. That's pretty much it for me. Lots of other bands were decent, but not memorable at all.

But I thought Californication came out at the end of the 90s. I mean I like(d?) the chilis but man By the Way and Stadium Arcadium are just not very good. Certainly not memorable albums of the decade.

I personally loved Stadium Arcadium.

No one other than BrandNew is gonna man up and list some of their favorite songs of the decade? Without putting a whole lot of thought into it, here's a few of mine:

  1. Frog Eyes - Bushels
  2. Animal Collective - Loch Raven
  3. Radiohead - Idioteque
  4. Gang Gang Dance - House Jam
  5. Arcade Fire - Tunnels
  6. The National - Mr. November

It's waaay skewed to the second half of the decade since I didn't buy a whole lot of music in the first half.

I'm tempted to make a list but I could lose a lot of time doing so. Then again maybe my lab report can wait 'til tomorrow...

If societal impact has much more weight to their song choices than anything else, then I don't see how they managed to not include a single Eminem song in the top 50. There was nobody quite like him that made as much of an impact in the hip-hop scene in the early 2000s. And not just him - no Dr. Dre either. TI is in the fucking top 50.

They have three Eminem songs in the whole list. :lol

And two of them are his joke pop songs. List is a fucking joke.

Lil Wayne's A Mill is #80, while Lose Yourself isn't even in the top 100, and Sing for the Moment nor Stan are on the list at all.

Incredibly Naive
I used to be a huge fan of Outkast... I still listen every now and then, but it's been quite a while since some memorable material. Either way I'm actually not upset with this song at number 1.

If you look at their EOY lists and their book that came out last year, this general list isn't much of a surprise.

Just doing a quick look-through, Jay-Z is on the most songs with 8, Kanye West with 7, and Animal Collective and Radiohead with 4, and then a bunch more with 3.

They have three Eminem songs in the whole list. :lol

And two of them are his joke pop songs. List is a fucking joke.

Lil Wayne's A Mill is #80, while Lose Yourself isn't even in the top 100, and Sing for the Moment nor Stan are on the list at all.
Good Lord do I hate that song.

I can't think of a list that isn't going to skew way latter half, but here's ten songs that came out this decade that I adore:

10. "Starz" by Jaylib
9. "The Very Best of Neil Diamond" by Super Furry Animals
8. "Postcard to Nina" by Jens Lekman
7. "Run" by Air
6. "Marble House" by The Knife
5. "Looter's Follies" by Destroyer
4. "Workin' on Somethin' Better" by Junior Senior
3. "Benton Harbor Blues" by Fiery Furnaces
2. "Purple Bottle" by Animal Collective
1. "Digital Love" by Daft Punk

Almost no thought expended beyond ordering my albums by year.

No one other than BrandNew is gonna man up and list some of their favorite songs of the decade? Without putting a whole lot of thought into it, here's a few of mine:

  1. Frog Eyes - Bushels
  2. Animal Collective - Loch Raven
  3. Radiohead - Idioteque
  4. Gang Gang Dance - House Jam
  5. Arcade Fire - Tunnels
  6. The National - Mr. November

It's waaay skewed to the second half of the decade since I didn't buy a whole lot of music in the first half.

Oh I didn't actually post MY favorite 5, I just posted what I thought, out of Pitchfork's top 10, should've been the five best. Mine would be a bit different.

Worst decade ever, hopefully the next decade gets some better music.

Wrong.

And I'll make a silly list. It's mainly my favorite songs list, ex the 90's era weezer. :lol

No particular order.

  • The White Stripes - Ball and Biscuit
  • M. Ward - I'll Be Yr Bird
  • The National - Mr. November
  • Weezer - Pig (Demo)
  • Rock Plaza Central - I Am An Excellent Steel Horse
  • The Tallest Man on Earth – The Blizzard's Never Seen The Desert Sands
  • Colour Revolt - Mattresses Underwater
  • Man Man - Van Helsing Boombox
  • Dear and the Headlights - Sweet Talk
  • mewithoutYou - In A Sweater Poorly Knit
  • Titus Andronicus - Titus Andronicus
  • Arcade Fire - No Cars Go
  • The Antlers - Two
  • Port O'Brien - I Woke Up Today
  • LCD Soundsystem - All My Friends

Some of my favorites. Didn't put it in any sort of "this is the best of the decade" order, nor thought, but just my favorites that I can think of.

edit:

Been going through my itunes and remembering tons of songs that I forgot. Bloc Party, an Okkervile River song, battles, lil wayne and kanye . . .wooppsss. Will make a more concise list later.
