I think it'll be a harder sell with parents. Looks like a premium edition Switch with mostly the same games but prettier. Being that most kids will mostly use it for Minecraft, I can see this having a WiiU like trajectory where gaming enthusiasts drive most sales.

Switch's massive install base means publishers will be supporting it for years yet, even if Nintendo move their focus. Success rests on how well they respond to the complaint "but you already have Mario Kart on your Switch."

Way less confusing than what the heck Microsoft is doing with its console naming.

Theres a 2 in the name and people are used to see a console with a number attached to it's name. Thanks Sony!

Nintendo has done the safest and most logical thing they could with the naming and avoiding major changes to how the hardware is operated. If someone's going to be confused by something, it's going to be why games like Mario Kart cost so much.

If you don't notice with that 2, you will notice with the price, anyway Nintendo could have made another box with a different design and colors, the Switch OLED and Switch 2 are almost the same.

Well yeah both consoles look very similar and you could confuse the "2" with meaning there is two consoles inside which kinda makes sense.

Buuuuuuut I think retailers have learned from the past and bought off most of their Switch 1 stock and will only sell Switch 2's as to not confuse people and make it easier on the employees. Thats what I hope at least.

If people weren't confused by the Game Boy vs Game Boy Color vs Game Boy Advance, it should be fine.

But I agree the red color packaging isn't the best idea when you don't want people to get confused

It's literally the clearest possible branding choice they could have done. They even made the 2 absolutely ginormous in the logo.

You think "Switch 2" is confusing?

Let's call Xbox 3 Xbox One.
Let's name the successor to Xbox One X, Xbox Series X. Not confusing at all.

GAF predicted it a long time ago, actually. Haven't you seen all those threads where they proved how incompetent it would be for Nintendo to call a successor to the Switch 'Switch 2'? The only way for them to avoid confusing consumers and not repeat the Wii U disaster was to call the new console 'Super Switch.' At least, that's what GAFfers told us.

Nowhere near the same degree as this

Microsoft confuse the hell out of most people. It's almost like they are trying to make things difficult on purpose lol...

Ah yes. I remember when I sent someone to buy a PS3, but they failed to notice the 3, or the difference of several hundred dollars, and bought a PS2 instead. Sony should have made the PS3 a completely different color to head off such confusion; shame on them for artificially boosting sales of PS2 with such an obvious deceptive scheme.

Kudos for the subtle dig at nintendo fans grasp on reality.

I'd say that switch 2 will be like being punched in the face, repeatedly, which tends to make anyone very confused.

If your parents end up buying you a Switch instead of a Switch 2, escape and look for foster parents. Your chances of surviving in life will be higher.

That they never learn from their mistakes. Yes, the packaging with only the 2 is very badly chosen. Not quite as bad as the Wii U debacle, but not too far off either.

The system looks the same, the packaging looks almost the same... yeah I can see some parents mistaking one for the other.

The mystery has finally been solved of how they sold so many PS2, it was people meaning to buy a PS3 and failing to notice a few hundred bucks and the difference between "2" and "3". They probably only prevented as many people from making a mistake as they did by adding a Spider-Man font. Nintendo, do the right thing: add Spider-man, for the children at Christmas. Do it.

That's not the problem. The real problem is that Switch 2 plays basically the same games that Switch 1 already play.

I doubt it. Most people don't get confused when they upgrade their iPhone every year and those barely change, lol

They are awfully similar, definitely something some random "none gamer" would mistakenly pick up any one when grabbing it from the warehouse for a customer purchase and of course anyone with zero knowledge on games might likely no think twice about.
I mean It's easy for us to say they're easy to tell the difference but I remember the many occasions a shop worker would bring me out a Dualshock 2 instead of a DS3..
The fact it has 2 on it means nothing l, visually they look very similar.

Yeah those controllers look very alike, but I see it like any other iterative phone, tablet or whatever upgrade. Yeah it looks the same, but you tell the difference by reading the box. Back in the days of Dual Shock 2 vs 3, we didn't have so many similar looking devices that were largely differentiated with a number or plus sign or whatever. I'd hope a modern shop worker would be a little more discerning. How many times do you get the wrong iPhone picked out. Fairly big deal from small details and that's just everyday business now, the largest business.

Aside from that, consoles aren't really picked up off the shelf by the customer. You ask for one and staff gets it for you. What a monumental fail if you walk in looking for the "new model Switch" and walk out with a Switch 1.

I think that happened when there was no internet or it wasn't that mainstream. Nowadays anyone that can afford a video game console has internet on their hands with mobile phones. And can do a little research where in doubt.

Well yeah this is true of any BC console at launch.

If you're talking about new games, that isn't really true. It plays the same IPs, but the games are new. It's called MK World and not MK 9 because it's a new type of game that couldn't have been fully realized on the old hardware. If we're talking third party, I don't think Cyberpunk was possible on Switch 1 either.

People were dumb enough to not see the difference between Wii and Wii U. Never underestimate people. This is going to be "the Switch game I bought for my kid doesn't work on his Switch" all over again.

Obvious there's exeptions, like new Mario Kart and Cyberpunk, but the majority of games still can be played on Swicth 1 and with high prices and economy in the current state, I doubt Switch 2 will get the 15 million mark of Nintendo.

I am as adjacent to console gaming as can be without actually gaming on console, and I find a lot of the naming needlessly confusing, so yes I can see normies getting confused by anything which leaves any room for confusion.

I disagree that the branding 'couldn't be clearer'. Putting 'Switch 2' would be clearer than '2... Nintendo Switch', as would not using the exact same colour and style as the Switch. It would not be particularly unreasonable for a normie to assume that first box is a Switch with 2 controllers / controllers for 2 people imo. I have no idea if that is even a thing for Switch, but nor will a lot of people who know nothing about it beyond their kid wanting one.
