It's a mistake. Going with the same color palate, similar branding while perhaps not outright confusing, doesn't give the impression that this is a new console.

Playstation 1 went from white to black PS2. Switch 2 is branded as a 'pro' version.

Mario Kart World doesn't offer anything new either, it's too samey as the one that already sold 80+ million.

This generation is Nintendo's to lose. Now, I'm not at all saying they will.

I'm not discrediting the point you're trying to make but the ps1 was clearly grey

There certainly will be. The question is: How many will be confused by the Switch 2? And the goal is to minimize that set.

Probably, but even still there were a good number of Switch 1 physical games that required hard drive space to play.
I don't think so. You knew it was a code in a box, it was pretty clearly stated on it. And a ton of third parties that sell a lot on Switch didn't do this.

Right now, almost all third party games are fucking Game Key Cards. This was absolutely NOT the case on Switch 1.

Looking forward to Nintendo having to deal with this shit, this is going to be a ton of fun.

Pretty sure it's a REQUIREMENT for all Switch 1 games to label on the box that "Download and Internet Connection Required" for games that are not fully on the card.

Batman Arkham Trilogy
Metal Gear Solid Master Collection
Hogwarts Legacy

and dozens of others ALL have this printed on the box. This is not new for Switch 1 physical owners.

I vote yes because the majority of the purchases are going to be done by moms.

Not as bad as the Wii u

No, even if Nintendo managed to make the package stupidly similar. But people are really informed these days, I mean if they didnt confused with the Xbox.:

"I want an xbox sir
"Sure, what do you want: Xbox One, Xbox One X, Xbox Series S or Xbox series X?"

But maybe Nintendo will blame this when they sell less than the Swich 1. Besides any opinion on Nintendo, their politics or pricing, the video game market is shrinking, and its seems their replacement is tiktok and others form of social media.

You are voluntarily blinding yourself at how common this is now. For example, every single Sonic game was on the card on Switch. Now, SEGA are going to do shitty Game Key Cards like everybody. Sonic games sell a gazillion units on Nintendo consoles. Kids and grand-parents are gonna cry for Christmas.

But that's fine. Because this is going to be fun to watch unfold.

And you think these kids only ever played Sonic games or don't know anything about downloads or memory cards?

Bruh, Switch 2 comes with 256GB stored onboard. If they can't figure out how downloads, data or memory cards work then they might have much bigger problems in life. This is not a magical new concept when dealing with technology. N64 had memory cards and we did just fine.

being a walmart worker, I have had plenty of stupid people (a granny who bought de games for her grandkid's switch, several people buying xbox series games thinking theyll run on the xbox one, people buying external hdd's thinking theyll run ps5/XSX games, and of course: 'why is the switch lite cheaper?')

So yeah, I expect people to fuck up here and there. But I dont expect it to be a widespread issue. This isnt a wii to wii u or xbox one to xbox series when it comes to naming levels of stupidity.

Mcrosoft just make too much money from their other intrests. Their console gaming division is a drop in the ocean.
And I suspect they'll be dropping out of the race entirely sooner than later.

Nah.

Wii u was a fucking joke tho.
Every fucking parent came inside the store asking for a wii tablet

This Mario Kart is bringing a lot of changes to the table (for better and worse). The community is going to have a lot to say about it and I don't think they'll be complaining about how it's the same.

On Switch 1, IIRC Nintendo eventually made a larger card available.

I hope the inverse happens this time, because the only options they offer to publish are digital, game key card or a 64GB card.

I can't help but wonder if the exodus wouldn't have happened so fast if they offered a 32GB card. I was waiting to buy a game for NS2 that is only 24GB and I'm betting it would have been a real physical copy if they had 32GB. No wonder no one wants to pay for the cart, it's a load of wasted money for many games.

Maybe they will get around to making smaller cards later, though by that time all the publishers will probably be well adjusted to game key card releases. Without a smaller card though I think we are totally screwed, we would never even see small games like retro compilations get a real copy. This is the very worst thing about Switch 2...

There is a 2 then the name. No thanks I don't need 2 nintendo switches for my one child at $500. I'll take the 1 nintendo switch for less money. Thank you.

Some people don't give a shit about video games and their nomenclature. In fact some people have an aversion to video games and other children's things.

You can't fix stupid, but if you're trying to buy a Switch 2 and accidentally buy a Switch OLED...you're unfixable.

Numbering your product is the most basic way to tell someone it's the next one.

If the 2 is too confusing to people, than our education system is well and truly fucked.

People are stupid so yes. Although it clearly says 2 on the box and they will still get it wrong

Not talking about the gamers, but the people who aren't and going to buy for their kids or whatever.

People are dumb and there is already 10 versions of the 1st switch.

I don't understand the color scheme either with the box. None of us are getting confused but with the state of customer service nowadays I don't think employees are gonna ask if the person meant to get switch 2

I dont think it will be confusing, but i do know a lot of people that wont buy it cause they have the switch 1. There will be less casual purchasers and multi-purchasers.

I don't think people were confused about the Wii U, to me, it's just an excuse,
The elder people who play Wii Sports might get confused, but they aren't the ones that will upgrade anyway. Anyone in the target audience for the WiiU knew exactly what it was, they just didn't care...

Nintendo didn't really seem to have a target audience for Wii U. They just seemed to try and target everyone at once and thereby failed to target anyone.

It was clear from the fact that they used the Wii name that they wanted the casuals back. Yet they treated those casuals like normal gamers or even Nintendo employees. The assumption being that the entire world was beating to the cadence of Nintendo generations. The truth is the console looked the same and they intentionally put it in the background of marketing while focusing on the controller. The masses really didn't get the picture it was anything more than a tablet add on at first blush, and didn't care to find out because a giant game controller only now with extra shit on it is the polar opposite of what made the Wii popular to begin with (removing buttons from a controller).

Meanwhile what it did have were excellent first party games in HD that didn't really need the tablet or align with the Wii branding very well. It just completely owned itself.

Yeah, especially so considering a Nintendo used "Wii" for loads of add on products, some of which were quite pricey as well. Wii Fit, Wii Wheel, Wii Music, Wii Blaster, Wii Balance Board etc. etc. etc. Wii U just blends right in. And they also showed people using Wii remotes to play golf on the GamePad itself.

It was a perfect storm consisting of loads of factors, but that positioning definitely didn't help.

Ah yes. I remember all the confusion when PlayStation 2 came out. No one knew what was going on.

they look nothing alike. they didn't even use the same logo, just the old wordmark beneath a completely new logo, while the old PS logo was only on the side, shrunken down and monochrome.

meanwhile the Switch 2 uses the same packaging color, the exact same icon and prominent wordmark, with the big change being a 2 added.

not to mention the core system also looking very similar, while the PS2 looked completely different to the PS1.

you underestimate the stupidity and ignorance of the average consumer I think.
I have seen someone in a gamestop ask the clerk what the difference between GTA4 and GTA5 is and why GTA4 was cheaper. wording it as if he thought one is just the revision of the other, like some yearly sports game or a new Windows version.
the guy behind the counter didn't know what to say 🤣.

The box is very similar, but with the giant number 2 and the difference in retail prices will make it more obvious that it is a new console.

But I believe that in marketplaces some will create ads like "new Nintendo Switch system" with the exact price of the Switch 2 but a photo of the Switch 1 to try to confuse some people and mislead them.

Where's the proof that Wii U sold badly because of confusion? How do you know that many people were SO confused?

The console was a piece of shit with a pointless expensive gimmick that didn't make any sense and had lots of other problems. Sluggish, outdated compared to the competition, etc.

I think it's silly that people will confuse the Switch and the Switch 2. People are used to new consoles and they will understand that 2 is more (better, newer) than 1. It's that simple.

The sure understood the difference between DS and 3DS.
