Plasma, LCD, OLED, LED, best tv for next gen

Models past the 800b have a weird wedge shape, but the 790/800b just have a very thin bezel with a thicker back only at the bottom where the inputs are. Some issues if you want to wall mount but perfectly fine otherwise.

The 800b shape is odd in that like after midway up the back, where the inputs end, it is just screen. Like literally under an inch thick. I can't even support my tower of sensors (wii, wiiu, and ps4 thing) on the top because the ps4 thing has nothing really to brace itself to.

My other concern with the W800B was just that all of the non-HDMI ports are back mounted. It's a ridiculously slim TV (basically a large version of those super-slim LG Computer LCDs) but if you wall mount, all of the TOSLINK/Component/Composite ports are inaccessible without either (a) right-angle adapters or (b) an articulating wall mount, which is the only type that can swing out enough to give those ports room.

The HDMI and USB ports are all side or bottom mounted and thus easy to access from a typical mount.
Thanks for the replies. I got to see the H6350/6400 and W700B today finally. Was impressed with the 6350 screens in 48 and 55 inch. Not the 50 inch one they had set up. Turns out it is because the 50 inch does not have Samsung panels. Definitely did not like the grey bezel of the W700B, but did like the picture.

Wish I could see a W800B, but that doesn't seem likely.

Last question, what is going on with the light on the center bottom of the W700/800B's under the Sony logo? Does it just randomly cycle between grey and blue lights? Was very odd.

On the W800b, at least, it's basically a feedback mechanism. There is no color change (it's always white AFAIK?) but it can glow or pulse depending on what you do. So cycling through menu actions, downloading something, etc will cause a pulse (and a sound effect). It's very reminiscent of the PS4 light bar but nowhere near as bright. It's just a cool little touch. If you're just not using the menus it just stays a low white.

The LG 1080p OLED just got a $500 price drop to $3,000 for anyone on the fence.

Also, Sony will be unlocking their 4K media player to support all 4K televisions soon.
Sony's biggest announcement at the show, in my mind at least, was that the FMP-X10 4K media player would be updated later this year to work with other company's TVs. That's right: Sony is going nonproprietary. Sony. Wrap your head around that for a moment.

This is a big deal, since the lack of content had become a serious impediment to 4K adoption, and Sony was a major culprit. The FMP-X10 can access more than 200 titles in 4K, including films like "American Hustle" and future releases such as "The Amazing Spider-Man 2." Notable TV series like "The Blacklist" and "Breaking Bad" are also on tap. Pricing for movies is typically $7.99 to rent for 24 hours or $29.99 to buy. And the player can also stream Netflix's 4K content. In short, it offers the best selection of 4k content anywhere.

There are restrictions, of course, but pretty reasonable ones. The TV will need HDMI 2.0, HDCP 2.2, and so on, meaning most 2014 4K TVs will be compatible, but some 2013 sets might not.

My Samsung LCD recently broke and I'm in the market for a new TV. Can someone recommend me a good one off amazon?

Needs to be
- Around 50 inches
- Smart
- Good for gaming
- Budget is around $500

Best Buy will match Amazon at the register, no questions asked. I've even price matched the 800b to 700b for people.

Interesting. I didn't know that.

I really don't feel like this is the year for 4K though. Panels are improving, smart features are improving...just feels like the spec is still too raw.

This is my feelings on 4k tvs as well. Not to mention the lack of content currently. Unless you got the cash to blow and really want to have the latest stuff let other people beta test it for a few more years to see what happens with it. Will give oled stuff time to improve and get lower prices as well.

That light at the bottom was just cycling becasue of it being on desplay mode. You can change it from several settings from on with notifications to fully off. I have it so it goes on when I'm pressing a button on the remote.

The Samsung not using Samsung panels is why I didn't go with it tbh, and I think it is just random what one you get. Like with all those sizes. Not positive on that though, but pretty sure you can get the 50" with the Samsung panel, just where you looked didn't have that one on display, and you can get the other sizes with non Samsung panels. From what I understand it is luck of the draw.

Why doesn't it seem likely that you could see the 800b? The best buy rep tried to tell me it was discontinued (standard thing sales people will do when they don't have something in stock so they can sell you something else), but I just went to another store and they had one on display.

Edit: Also if I was going to get a samsung it would have been for the smart features and cool remote, so would have gone with the h6400 that comes with that remote instead of the h6350.

Sony KDL48W600B Smart 1080P LED is 60 Hz with motionflow for $600? Low input lag and PSNow built in. Gaming mode in scene select.

My advice: CHECK THE LATENCY/LAG! Many TVs have lots of latency that make them really shitty for gaming. I regret making that mistake. There is some website that tracks all of the latency info. (Anyone have it?)

avs forums' panel lottery thread says that the 50 inch h6350 has only non-samsung panels and all h6400 under 65 inches have only non-samsung panels. Other sizes of the h6350 have different panels.

The BB around me had several W700b's and no W800b's. Might try another BB.

How is the picture on the Sony KDL60W850B when watching movies and playing games?

I want something that will look and play really nice for gaming(primary use) but also be a great TV for movies and tv shows(secondary use, but I am a bit of a videophile).

I've seen a couple impressions here but nothing really in-depth yet...

Hopefully, today is the day i get the 51F8500.
Hopefully it's delivered in one piece.

sorry for the useless post, i had to share the excitement :D

Ah okay.

Try some other stores unless you are just looking for a direct comparison to the w700 that is only at best buy. Went to an hhgregg after best buy and that's where I got to see a w800.

Also looking for a gaming TV near $500 and 50".

I'm interested in opinions on the Toshiba 50L1400U 50 Inches1080p 60Hz as well as the previously mentioned Sony KDL60W850B. Other suggestions are welcome!

Just got my 51" F8500 This Saturday. I love it! If you need help getting the lag down while maintaining a good picture let me know.

W8 looks a lot nicer to me... bezel is nicely finished.

Eh, actually it does look amazing, although as usual, the better the tv, the worse less than optimal sources will look.

But yes, the lag is there and it's quite apparent especially in 60fps games.
MGSV GZ, The Last of Us...i had a hard time aiming. I'm sure you can get used to it, but it feels off.
I know about the "rename to PC" trick, and it does work, but also makes things look worse, so yeah, any advice is welcome.

BTW I just updated to FW 1118 (i tested it with 1115) so i don't know if things got better with the update.

Other than that, lots of options for calibration, currently going with these settings:
http://reviews.plasmatvbuyingguide.com/samsung-plasma-tv/samsung-f8500-picture-settings.html

Blu Ray's look stunning, Sky hd (which is compressed 1080i)...not so much.
On the TV i had before (an old 720p Sony RPTV) i could barely tell the difference between those.
On the other hand, 720p mkv's look very good.
1080p games look incredible (Infamous SS..wow) i have yet to try X360 games.

So far, stunning TV, hope i can trim the lag down without the image suffering too much

Unfortunately, renaming the input to 'PC' on Samsung TVs disables almost all image adjustments.

This is one reason I don't buy Samsung TVs, their input lag is high unless you're willing to make the image look like shit.

I watched Godzilla in Blu-ray 3D tonight. It was amazing as I could have hoped it would be. Full HD 3D 1080p to both eyes with Passive 3D is absolutely the way to go, nothing else comes close. I'm always continuously pleased with the best in LCD-class black levels, shadow detail, color gamut, light and dark contrast, and overall picture quality of my 65X900A for displaying sub-4K content, and that's not light praise coming from the owner of a 65VT60.

I would have a lot of great things to say about the movie as well but at this point there's not much I can say which hasn't already been said. Much as with the less serious Pacific Rim, they absolutely captured the heart and soul of the kaiju genre but with a bunch of fancy-ass American VFX work. The nuclear message of the original film is surprisingly intact though updated for a new century, and only amplified by the recent problems Japan has had with their nuclear power plants.

I actually wonder what the reception for this film was like in Japan.

GAF, help me !

I'm looking for a gaming TV. Something that looks nice and good input (under 30-40)

I'm currently looking at either the KDL42W700B(739$) or the KDL48W600B(639$).

I'm wondering if I should go for the bigger screen or the better PQ. Is the difference major or should I go for the 600B?

I'm also open to any other suggestions !

Thanks.

I'm really happy with the w800b

Loving the good PQ while gaming

My Panasonic P50VT25 just got this when I turned it on today. My 4 year extended warranty ended 2 months ago. Can something like this be repaired for a reasonable amount?

9yXqR4w.jpg

I paid about 300 to replace a board on my Panasonic plasma 6 months ago. Assuming it's a board that's the problem you should expect about the same

Decided I am going to burn an extra $300 in Amazon points to go from buying the KDL55W800b up to the Sony KDL60W850b. Bigger screen, cool (ish) wedge shape, same performance, same low lag.

Bigger is better, right. Upgrading from a circa 2007 50" 720p Panasonic Plasma.

Until i went up and down this thread, the Sony sets weren't even on my radar (It was between an LG and a Vizio up until about 2 weeks ago) so the power of GAF wins the day again.

Not a fan of the wedge, particularly for wall mounts, but apart from that nothing wrong with the W850B.

I upgraded from a 2006 Panasonic Plasma to the 55W800 (well, the Canadian version, the W790) and it has been totally worth it so far. Maybe a day where it seemed too big and now the size of the TV just seems "normal". The Sony interface is much better than the old Panasonic stuff, and even the little things, like 4 HDMI ports...

Time to make a decision. I'm looking for an HDTV:
- with less than 20ms of input lag
- that is 60" or greater in size
- plays nice with an XRGB-3 in B1 mode via a VGA-to-component converter
- and is available in the US.

I've written down what displaylag.com has listed for Sony's 2014/2013 models, and I've filled in a few 60"+ models that I couldn't find any latency info on. So here's what I've got:

tvlag.png

From the info here, the 65W850A seems to be the most appealing option, but I'm curious how the remaining models stack up on input lag, particularly the 65W950B. I notice that the 65S990A has a curved panel. Not sure if I care for that, either in how it looks or in that it seems to drive up the price for that model. I'm pretty indifferent when it comes to 3D, 4K, Smart TV features, and most of the other bullet points. General image quality is important, but low-latency gaming and size are the driving factors. I'm definitely open to other brands than Sony as well; these just seem to be what's hot and under the microscope at the moment.

I'll probably go with the Audio Authority 9A60A to pair with the XRGB-3 unless someone can point me to something with comparable performance for less than $100.

Any particular recommendations for a 4-way component switch?

Alright wizards. I just got a 60 inch Sony yesteday and realized it was too close to my face that I will nitpick at it constantly.

I think a 50 inch is the right size for the spot I am putting it. I only had 1 day with the Sony, but I really didn't care for what I saw. I have a 42 inch Panny plasma and it made me feel like I wasted $1300 on a tv. I tried watching a football game and it hurt my eyes with all that motion blur.

Basically whats the best picture quality tv (50 inch 1080p) I can get. my budget is $1300. I watch sports and I will barely use it for gaming. After my 60 inch destiny try out last night I will stick to my 24inch monitor for gaming.

Thanks.

Wife gave me the okay to pick up the LG OLED 55c9300. Can't wait!

Best picture ever according to CNET!

I found the picture quality amazing in the storeroom except during moution where there was notieceble jutter.

Please drop some impressions after you've enjoyed it for a while, the only concern I have with it would be burn in (which I've had issues with on my lg plasma). Still going to wait patiently for the 65" 4K version to become reasonable as a potential2015 purchase.

The only reason I'd be hesitant about the 4k version is the potential scaling lag that exists with the Sony 4k units

Look at RTINGS.com, stop giving a crap about the 120/240hz stuff, and think more about what devices you want to use and how you plan on setting up your TV.

XRGB comments are going to be much harder to find but I'd be surprised if they had TV compatibility problems.

Got that 7.1 Sony Soundbar ST7. Things ridiculous. I'm just done with the receiver setup, after moving 4x in the past year, it's a pain. I hope it lasts me awhile!

I just got the Sonos soundbar. I'm done with the bulky 5.1 setup. Sonos shits on the setup I had. Yamaha receiver and Polk speakers which cost me about 1500. The Sonos cost 700 and sounds a lot better minus the bass. Being able to stream music to the soundbar is amazing.

Vizio P Series is out. One of the calibrators at AVS did some lag tests with the Leo Bodnar device.

HDMI 1-4 all of which are v1.4
Game Low Latency off: 100ms
Game Low Latency on: 44ms

HDMI 5 (2.0)
Seems to be some kind of processing that throws off the LB device.

Sometimes it reads 0.4ms
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6V18UaOWj4g

Other times it reads 17ms
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3H86dbAzP8M

The 17ms is likely more accurate and that's still by far the best of any 4K display. Toshiba might be able to top it with their 10ms claim but we'll have to wait and see until it gets tested.

40ms isn't bad considering what the upscaler is doing...

Well since 4k content isn't going to be prevalent for a while, I just don't think it's worth sacrificing better input lag especially if he was using the TV mainly for gaming. Opinions mat vary, but I know I have my eye on the current 1080p set

-A gamer's point of view on his Oled LG 55ec9300-

Gaming:
I have been playing games on this non-stop as this is my gaming monitor. No image retention or burnin, checking with the 5 and 10% grey screens. Nothing has happened yet. All full screen gaming though, not sure if letterbox or 4:3 content could cause uneven wear, I would use caution with that type of content in the first couple hundred hours. The only issue with gaming on this display is that you can see in some instances the vertical banding, you would think you could see it in roads which are composed of grey's in driving games with the back and forth but you cant, only sometimes in the sky if your looking for it.

I tried my torture test for displays, Forza 5.. it is very bright and every display except the samsung pc monitor fails at this game, they all show DSE ( plasma's) or vertical banding (led's). This display is much better then led's when it comes to banding, but it is still there and can be noticable. FPS games actually faired better because you look all over and there is not horizontal banding so averal much better then led's in this respect.

I have tried fighting games, FPS shooters, racing games etc on here and this display handles them like a champ! This dispolay can do true 0 black and its amazing how much this and the perceived contrast changes the way all games look, it has this liquid look to them now, its hard to describe but it is incredible, it really is. Most gaming was with 1080 games on next gen PS4 and Xbox One and I have tried PS3 with games like Tekken 5 DR and Burnout Paradise.

I have not seen an y image retention and would HIGHLY recommend this screen for gamers!! nothing compares.

Longevity:
I have been running the Oled tv non stop since last saturday, 24 hrs a day, full screen slides. No smell from the tv, no buzz, not even hot to the touch and no fan noise. I have checked the timing counter and have done this for 181 hrs. No dead or stuck pixels. From what I have deduced this panel can stand up to the rigors of running it hardcore with no issues. I had the oled light at 50 mots of the time and contrast at 80 in Pc mode and game picture mode. I don't recommend breaking it in with vivid or store mode.

So far everything has been bliss on the tv. The only issue I have and its an an issue I have encountered on alot of displays and that is vertical banding. This tv does indeed have some vertical banding, it is NOT noticable in all content, mostly in blue sky content panning left to right or right to left and it is more noticable is medium to slow speed panning. Fast panning in FPS shooters and racing games it is harder to notice which is completely different to led's and plasma when it comes to noticing banding.

I have checked the Oled for horizontal banding- None. Very shocked about that, I have not come across a display that didn't in one way or another have that, the Kuro's had it via the filter they applied, sometimes looking like DSE, all led's I have used barring 23 inch pc monitors have it too, so this is a huge plus to the oled.

Motion clarity:
Plasma's have phosphor lag, the 1080p Kuro's had it worse when content was high contrast, phosphor streaking in gaming was most noticable, not much of an issue with tv and movies though. Led's have blur that comes after the color being displayed, alot of higher end led's use S-PVA, MVA etc panels, these blur moreso with darker colors. The oled does not have this pixel persistance like the led's.

What I am trying to say about oled motion for gaming is that overall I prefer it to plasma with its phosphor lag and the led's with their color streaking. The oled removes the previous picture much faster then plasma or led so for gaming I would prefer an oled for motion. The 300 lines that is being quoted to do is indeed accurate per that test but you have to play games on it and go back and forth with plasma and trust me their is a difference and I prefer oled.

Input lag:
I am on firmware 4.30.08, with hdmi input labeled PC and putting it in game mode ( you also want to go into the genreal settings and turn off auto update for firmware, and anything else you can turn off ) and I get 26.1ms for the top bar, middle bar is 29.2 and bottom bar is 31.3 with my Leo Bodnar input lag tester. What is interesting is that the oled screen displays the full screen image faster then any led I have tested, all of the leds I have tested with this tester take about 7ms per bar, so a total of 14ms to update the entire screen whereas the oled does it in 4ms.

The only display I have that feels snappier in gaming response to this oled for input was the Samsung S24D590pl, which had 2ms top, 8.9ms middle and 17.2ms bottom. This is also the only display I have seen with no vertical banding. Sadly the contrast was only about 1100:1 and the blacks completely went to glowing with maybe 50 degree off angle. Also it was very small.

Compared to other displays:
Below is a list of displays I have/had :

Pioneer Elite Kuro Pro101 ISF calibrated by D-Nice
Pioneer Elite Kuro Pro110
Pioneer Elite Kuro Pro111
Pioneer Elite Kuro Pro1150
Samsung 65H8000 ISF calibrated by D-Nice (Led)
Samsung 32D5000 ISF calibrated by D-Nice (Led)
Samsung 55F7100 ISF calibrated by D-Nice (Led)
Sony 52XBR909 (FALD)
Sony 34XBR800 (CRT)
Sony 30XBR910 (CRT)
Sony 24FW900 (CRT)
Samsung S24D590 (LED pc monitor)
Samsung S23A750D (LED pc monitor)
LG Oled 55ec9300
LG Oled 15el9000

I have the LG oled 9300 next to my Pioneer Kuro Elite... some interesting observations so far. The Pioneer is incapable of even coming remotely close to the Oled for contrast and blacks. Even though the ABL is on the Oled, the full screen white can still be super bright compared to the Elite plasma.

The blacks.... watching the oled in a pitch black room has to be done... it is like nothing I have experienced before in a display. I could never in the past watch a plasma or led/lcd in the dark because of the glowing blacks. No longer need to play with the lights on :0

The oled is also alot clearer, same resolution 1080p but the oled is 5 inches bigger and has no PWM noise, no DSE unlike the Kuro. The oled seems to have not much between you and the actual picture and it comes off looking very pure in display.

All of my Kuro's had some type of DSE, just the nature of the filter on the panel and playing bright games, normal tv content and movies rarely showed it. There was no DSE on the Oled, only some vertical banding on some content and 5 and 10% grey screens.

Games seem to really show a displays downfalls versuse tv/movie content. Kinda like test screens. So this review is more geared towards how the display handles games. For tv/movies I do not see the vertical banding nearly as much.

Final take:
This Oled for gaming is better then all of the displays I have mentioned above, there is just no comparison. If they can get the vertical banding gone on the grey patterns that show in some content and offer flat versions of the tv then their really won't be anything left to nitpick!

I had already checked that site beforehand, they hadn't tested the specific model I was looking for (just the corresponding 55-inch version), and I don't particularly care about the listed refresh rates; they were just in the chart because I copied everything over from displaylag's table without doing much editing. So all I can take away from your post is a dismissive tone and a lack of any particularly useful info.

I went ahead and gambled on the 65W950B. I'll probably post some info on it once I put it through the ropes.

-A gamer's point of view on his Oled LG 55ec9300

Very interesting read, Blackvette. Thanks for your in-depth impressions.

I do have a few follow up questions about PC mode on this TV, especially since I've had a negative experience with Samsung's PC mode in the past:

Which settings can be adjusted in PC mode? On my previous Samsung most settings were locked. Worst of all, the color setting was locked lower than it should have been, resulting in a desaturated / washed out picture.

Does PC mode work for 720p signals? Again on my previous Samsung, this mode wouldn't actually engage for 720p despite renaming the input. This is a concern for PS3 games that don't support scaling to 1080p.

Edit: I see that you tested Tekken 5 DR and Burnout Paradise. I believe T5DR is 1080p, but I'm not sure if Burnout is scaled to 1080p or an actual 720p signal.

FYI, Sears currently has the Sony 800b at a ridiculous price. $700 for the 50 inch model. Jump on this if you're interested, because it might even be a mistake. That's at least $200 cheaper than I've ever seen this TV for before.

Probably because I used the word "crap"? Well guess what, blunt as it may be, I gave you advice, and you just ignored it because you already read RTINGS and don't care about refresh rates - two facts you neglected to mention in your post. So I'll be nice and call it even.

My prior response was short, but it was to address three things:

1. People here ask about refresh all the time. Just look up the page. And as you know, it just doesn't matter for TV gaming. But we will probably have to say it again every page.

2. Asking about price is basically the black hole of questions, especially at 60" or any other supersize TV. Many of us our in Europe or Canada or Asia. Hell, I know from experience that pricing in the states varies wildly based on whether you use Amazon, Frys, or any number of local chains.

3. Usage, usage, usage. Do you want to wallmount? Do you need side ports? 4x HDMI?
Do you need Smart TV features? Can you see Plasma phosphor lag? This is how you should narrow down what TVs you are interested in. Pricing can help narrow down things in a vague way (ie: can you afford OLED, 70" vs 60", etc.) but as you can see from just Sony alone they can have 3-4 sets with a single screen size.

I went ahead and gambled on the 65W950B. I'll probably post some info on it once I put it through the ropes.

The W950B is a interesting line. Hate the wedge but at 65" it will probably help out the audio chamber a lot, and it's so big it should look great free-standing. Let us know how it goes.

Very interesting read, Blackvette. Thanks for your in-depth impressions.

Hi Easymode!

Happy to answer those :)

PC mode on the LG Oled allows you to still choose your picture ( ie Game, standard, ISF etc). Choosing Game mode with the pc input label will net you the lowest lag of the bunch.

The following can still be changed in PC mode and game mode ( ISF modes etc still allow 100% adjustment but at higher lag, I have those lag numbers too if need be):

Oled light
Contrast
Brightness
Color
Tint
Sharpness
Gamma
HDMI black level
Color temp

Also good news is that PC mode in any picture mode does indeed pass 4:4:4 chroma which is great for games and pc use!

All enhancements are off and greyed out, which is good, you would want them off anyway.

PC mode does indeed work for 720p, I have tried many PS3 games on it and even in PC mode ( game picture selected) it makes them look great too.

I have had/have Samsung tvs and PC mode is more limited in options to adjust. The Pioneer Kuro's are way worse in PC mode, no way to make them look remotely right in that mode.

Happy to answer those :)

I appreciate the detailed answers, and I won't need the ISF numbers. It's good to see that LG's PC mode isn't as restrictive as Samsung's.

This TV is currently on sale in Canada at Best Buy and FutureShop for $3999, marked down by $1000. Sale ends on September 25th. Man, that's not much time to decide! Plus I already have a 55" Sony W900A, which is no slouch.

So audiovideonation.com gave me a call today about the TV I ordered, and they were very insistent that I upgrade to freight shipping (instead of the free shipping I chose) and that I buy an extended warranty (which, contrary to their implied statement that it's a Sony warranty, is likely a 3rd party warranty judging from other customer reviews). And from other reviews that I'm seeing, people who decline these offers sometimes just have their orders hang in limbo forever.

Welp, that's the kind of low-ball nonsense that'll get me to cancel and order elsewhere instead.
